How long does it take a cue to warp?

Hi Guys,

Just as an experiment, I took down a full splice blank to final size and finish it up in one day. The shaft was properly cuts and cured so it was fine. But I was wondering how long does it take for a butt to warp?

Its been more than a month and the butt that I've turned is still perfectly straight...actually it doesn't look like it move on the lathe.

YES ! Finally someone is sending me a free cue. I knew living here in this desert would pay off some day ... and it's great that folks understand what we mean when we say "ya, but it's a dry heat" or "ya, but it's a dry cold".

Hi, I am pretty sure that the cue will warp eventually ..it just a matter of time but was just curious as to how long. In the final cut the blank was sealed with several coat of wood sealer and super glue was the finish that I've used. Does dipping the butt into stabilizer work? A lot of cuebuilders had told me they dip their full splice blanks into nelsonite before taking a pass on it.

Will have video of this cue once my new camera arrives...probably wait a few more months and see how bad it get.

Years ago I tried that, with a flat laminated shaft blank. I took it from .750" on the tip end, down to .530" in one turnning. I was shocked that after 3 months, it did not move. Then winter in Illinois came,(with it's cold dry temps). I took it out to play with it one day & it had about a 1/4" warp. It seemed to happen all of the sudden. Since then, I have discovered that you can cut them with a few less turnings, than a normal shaft,but they still have to season between cuts...JER
 
A butt can warp in 30 seconds or 30 years. You just never know. I have watched cues warp while being cut and I have seen cues stay straight for years and something happen and them warp.
 
I agree with Chris. I've had shaft/butts stay straight throughout the whole process and then move over night after a final pass. Irritating but part of the process.
 
Some cues warp in the time it takes to hand it to the postmaster.
"Straight when it left here" as the saying goes. I have a 30 year old shaft that is DNS I don't know if it will ever warp. I also have some 20 year old cues with a butt warp at every possible inch. I think it has as much to do what happens after it leaves the shop.
