How many cues is to many?

> In an article about Lucky in P+B several years ago,he claimed to have 300 Szams, and there is no telling how many he's bought since then. Gus made just a hair short of 1200 cues. He probably has 400 by now. Tommy D.

Icon was making a joke that he wouldn't want a third of all the cues, meaning that he had 33% of every single cue ever made.

I've recently started buying custom cues and have about five and I have been getting so much flack from people things like I cant believe you would spend so much on a cue. Its not like I really let things people say get to me I'm just curious as to what people of this forum think.

You're getting so much BS from people for having expensive cues? I say they're all full of envy and dreams to trade places with you...Buy as many as you like and as long as you have the $$$.

As much as you can realistic afford to have. Not too much that it would have too much of an negative impact on your livelihood and relationships. Luckily, my gf (whom I'll probably end up marrying) promised me she'll get me a SW one day (if I get her a Hermes handbag first).

My wife thinks I am nuts (maybe she is right) and so do some of my friends. My sons are addicted the same as me, so they understand...actually, they contribute to the addiction. I have around 40, but only 10 or so that I really want to keep. The rest I am constantly trading or selling to get others. I love hitting with all the different cues from different makers. I also have come to learn that the cues I really appreciate are the traditional ones, especially full splice. While I like several CNC cues, I don't really love them like the others. I love points and veneers, and great wood. I don't know when to say "enough is enough", but then I am retiring next month so I can spend more time in the pool hall...........

Maybe I should get a couple more cues........

I now own 42 cues, with 5 more on the way. There is no doubt that it borders on addiction. I happen to be in a position that enabled me to buy all these without putting a financial burden on myself or my family.
I dont agree that you should play with all cues. I have at least half of my collection that have never been chalked. I truly love to take them out and look at them for hours. Am I a bit nuts, no more than someone who collects anything, such as baseball cards or whatever. If you have cues that are increasing in value, its even better.

I have about 3 customs
3 production q 'z
4 cases
and 3 customs on the way ..Murrell .Tucker .And someone i met in FLA 2 weeks ago..
o and a Paul Rubino q ..
Maybe a old Palmer ..

Not a lot but i do have some

When I get all my cues in I'll have six cues total, four players and two jump/breaks! Although I would like to have many, many more, I will have to wait for some time before puchasing another. In fact, my next cue purchase will most likely be when my name comes up on Joel Hercek's list. Although, if an opportunity presents itself I may order a Gilbert player between now and then.

I know it's going to be hard to control the impulses to order cues but I'm in search of a support group....lol.

> If he only has 100 or so,that is still an amazing collection, and you being a dealer I have to assume you know more than me. If this article was incorrect or I was,I stand corrected. If you had that many Szams, plus all the Cogs,Ginas,Boars and no telling what else, how would you decide on which one to make your daily player? I'd be ecstatic to have just one nice example of all the cues that have been discussed here in recent months. Tommy D.

The cues I collect are not the ones I play with, but they could be. I play with a Southwest.....I wanted one for my collection for a long time, then finally received one (two more being made including my "dream" playing cue, but a long time left to wait). It sat in my collection for a long time before I broke down and chalked it up to play with it. Once I did, I could not put it back up. It played like an old friend, as though I had played with it for years.

I still have several cues that I commissioned from other cue makers that are still unchalked in my display case, some have been there for several years. None have lost any value, so I guess I haven't lost any money on them. I still have a lot of other cuemaker's cues to try before I am done.

I am certain that I have the Obsessive Cue Buying Disorder that was mentioned....thanks for putting a name on it!!! This MUST be the support group.....how many steps in this program?

Two steps:

1. Find a cue.
2. Buy it.

not a dealer
collector for one year
why would dealers know more

Almost anyone would know more then a person (collector or dealer) who has only been doing something for just 12 short months, but one would assume that a dealer has more experience with seeing a wider range of cues over time. Of course I'd take a collector who has been collecting for 20+ years over a dealer who has been selling for 2 any time in the knowledge department. Just my $.02

so dealers would know better the cues that make up you collection than say a fellow collector?

Well, it's hard to understand your question (what with your bad grammar and all). But I'll give her a go. I said in general a person who has spent 20 years at show's talking cues with makers, looking at cues, buying and selling cues and just being around thousands and thousands of cue would know more about cues (in general) then a guy who has been around them for 1/20th the time. I feel this is common sense, if you'd like to take it as an insult feel free:-). Of course there are specialists in the field, someone like Joe Van knows lots about Palmers, he grew up in NJ and has seen many come and go, I wouldn't ask him a question about an Edwin Reyes cue. I also would not ask him about a cue you own, but that isn't saying he doesn't know about it or know more about the maker then you, again just going by the fact that a long time dealer would have seen many more examples of the persons work over the years then you and prolly had more dealings with the person. Again talking long time cuemakers and not some specialized niche. Maybe you live close to Madison Bon and have watched him since day one and bought all his cues, then in a short time you would probably know much more then some 25 year dealer who has never held one of his cues. Hopes this clears it up for you and I hope your ego let's you except it.

If you have more cues than room in your cases, then you have too many cues. Time to buy another case.

Fred <~~~ up to 8 or 9 cases

I don't think it borders on addiction. Hell, you passed the border about 30 cues ago.
