How Much is the Crown Prince of Brunei Bribing the WPA?

Action Challenge: Prince Billah & Joeya

Nice one Jay! Good to see some sense among the garbage. I have known Prince Billah for many years. He originally played snooker and when 9 Ball caught his attention I provided him with cues, coaching, practice partners and tournament opportunities. He takes his hobbies pretty seriously. They include Badmington which he plays to international standard and he also has his own soccer team. Unfortunately it is the only one in Brunei so they play in a neighbouring country league.

He takes his pool seriously and on his frequent visits to the UK he would play a challenge match EVERY day. Race to 11 - start at 11am sharp and usually takes a couple of hours while his entourage sit around waiting for him. He brings his own personal pool caddy, Dodi who racks the balls and prepares the Prince's cues for action.

The WPA bribed? What good would that do? The tournament is organised by Matchroom and the Prince is nominated by the Asian Pocket Billiard Union. He may not be the best player in the tournament (nor the worst) but he is proud to represent his country. He breaks well considering he generally breaks from the middle) and he is capable of stringing racks together.

His presence at any event does more good than harm as it creates an interest in certain media to which the game generally has no access.

Let the man get on with the game which he enjoys and supports.
It has probably cost close to a $million on practice, travel, security etc to get this far. Not to mention the man hours he has put in.

AH! Information from someone who KNOWS! Isn't that a fresh breeze of air?

The Prince's presence does far more good than harm. I am glad you made this post, since you are one of the few in the know. It is great that the Prince genuinely puts in the man hours to play this sport and others. It is great to know that he is capable of stringing racks together.

I probably play about the Prince's speed. On occasion I can run a rack or two. If you set up a match between the Prince and I, we can have JCIN and company do the Action Challenge thing online (www.theactionreport.com) and I promise not to dump no matter how much money ANYONE offers.

We could even play an all around, including snooker which I have never played. That would put the Prince and I on even more level playing field since I'm sure he hasn't played much one pocket. Sure, that sounds pretty good, some 10 ball (instead of 9 ball) since the Prince reportedly has a stronger break than I, some one pocket and some snooker but all of that is subject to negotiation.

I would bet that WWW.THEACTIONREPORT.COM would have to bring in some heavy-duty equipment to handle all of the traffic with that match. :)

Bring it on! :D

JoeyA

Edited: To reflect that JoeyA knows that the Prince can high-roll him and I don't want the shakes so no betting allowed unless its between AZers. :)

Well, last year his opponents were bribed to dump games to him, so all of his matches wouldn't be whitewashed.
In my opinion only one match has the problem last year - the Prince vs. Jharome Pena
The WPA knows that everyone knows about it, why are they still letting it happen? My friend was there last year, and he said the guy really can't play at all. Letting him in the tournament isn't all that bad, since he is the sole representative of a country, but the open bribing of a few of the game's top players, in front of people, I think that kind of makes the WPA look bad for turning a blind eye. At least have him do it in private this time.

The number one player of the member countries of APBU can be qualified for WPC (ex. Philippines No. 1 Efren Reyes, Korea No. 1 Ryu Seung-Young, Japan No.1&2 Naoyuki Ooi & Kawabata Satoshi......). Nothing is wrong.

Maybe this is just me, but if he brings A LOT of money to the sport this is a minor compromise of principle I'm willing to make.
Sorry my friend, but a compromise of principle is never minor. The effects never leave you. IHMO Don

If the world of pool wants to start dipping its toes in the alien waters of the maintenance of "principles" there are surely at least a few dozen more relevant and appropriate places to start than one historical virtually irrelevant match score between Jerome Phena and the Crown Prince of Brunei:)

Prince Billah

If I had two dollars (or even a pound) for everyone who asked me to fix it for them with The Prince to:
Challenge him to a money match
Give him coaching
Buy a cue or even a cue making business
Read some moneymaking scheme
Marry their daughter

....and 101 other things I would be a wealthy man.

But I respect the man too much to get into such sordid commerce. You are talking about the person who is heir to one of the world's largest fortunes. Money is a different commodity to him. He is also an active politician with many ceremonial duties that command his time.

So let's not dream!

You must have had the opportunity to sin and refused it before you can claim to be moral.

Never confuse the lack of opportunity with virtue.:D :D :D

Good for you!

Just keep my card handy in case he comes looking for me. :)

Nothing sordid about JoeyA or his commerce but can be accused of being a dreamer.

JoeyA (you can tell Prince Billah my avatar is about honor, not war).

Nice post Snoop Doug!

See you in Manila?

I think that I am going to give it a miss this year (but not 100% sure yet).
I did get an invitation from Yen Makabenta when we were at the World 8 Ball Championship in the UAE but I have not heard from him since then.
Anyway Good Luck and you go and do the business there.

Thomas Engert is playing the prince in the first round, i will tell him to put in some extra training hours...

MH
HOB Weert

Maurice, you can be assured that Prince Billah will be doing the same in readiness for his meeting with The Smiler.
It could be an interesting group and I think Thomas and Imran "loves Weert" Majid will go through on the winner's side. This would leave the Prince facing Troy Frank (or a weaker replacement if he does not go).

The winner of that might then face Kuo. Who knows what might happen then if ........

This is from his Wiki page...

Al-Muhtadee Billah (born February 17, 1974) is the first born son and heir to the Sultan of Brunei. He is the son of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and Queen Saleha.

Billah studied at Emanuel School and Magdalen College, Oxford University in 1997. While at Oxford, he followed a programme of study specially designed for him involving Islamic Studies and International Relations. He had previously attended St. Andrew's School in Bandar Seri Begawan for his primary education. He is a pool and snooker enthusiast, and participated in the 2006 WPA Men's World Nine-ball Championship.

The date August 10, 1998, marked the Royal Proclamation of His Royal Highness as the Crown Prince of Brunei. The proclamation puts him in line to become the 30th Sultan of Brunei.

On September 9, 2004, he married 17-year old Pengiran Anak Sarah at Nurul Iman Palace in Bandar Seri Begawan in an elaborate affair. Some considered the ceremony to be extravagant, as its cost was estimated at US$5,000,000 or GBP 2,800,000.

On March 17, 2007 at 3.50 pm, Prince Billah and Princess Sarah welcomed the birth of their first child and the future heir to the Brunei throne, His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Muntaqim.

He is also the Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, a general in the Brunei Armed Forces and an inspector in the Brunei Police Forces.

He owns supercars from around the world, including Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, Mercedes McLaren SLR and Ferrari 599 GTB.

On October 10, 2007, the $400,000 2007 World Pool Championship was launched at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel in Manila. Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah will again represent Brunei in the tournament at the Araneta Coliseum from November 3 to 11.

It's good to be the Prince! 5 Million dollar wedding? That's sick. If I was him I would have stayed single and had different girls imported weekly... Possibly daily.

He probably didn't miss much of the single life. His father was legendary for having some of the most widest parties ever thrown. It was said that Heidi Fleiss was the primary supplier for the female entertainment. I'm just bummed he never invited me!
