How Much More Time Do You Give Mark Wilson To Captain Team USA?

A well constructed post from someone who can distinguish the wood from the trees.
But Mark's approach to the job has always been twofold. He is trying to build a new infrastructure as well as a cup winning team. On the former he has made much progress but not so on his team building.
So here is a radical solution.Shane has had too many disappointing MC performances. Make him the non playing captain. Replace him with Justin Hall.
Retain the other four and then announce the team in January. Next step is to get a binding commitment from all six players to attend monthly sessions at Lindenwood where their one to one coach will be Mark Wilson. Every single player in the USA needs their fundamentals reviewed and deconstucted if necessary.

Good post, Doug. I really liked Rodney's performance this year at the Cup. His calm tableside demeanor was a breath of fresh air.

Justin Bergman also came through with some good shots when they were needed.

I also admire Sky's enthusiasm on the rail.

There does seem to be a disconnect with some of the team members on USA's team. I hope they can get it fixed. :)

You liked his (RM's) performance?!

I'm guessing that when the stats come out his will be the most dismal for this year's US MC team. And I get the whole easy going Hawaiian thing but personally I don't care for it. He has repeatedly miss-played shots and looks like he does not give a flip.

USA MC Rebuild

I know I am going to catch a lot of Flack but I believe Wilson and SVB should go .

Shane is absolutely one of if not the best in the world in Single match play , but he has a monkey on his back when it comes to the MC that he has never been able to shake . I think he needs to sit out a year or two and bring in some new blood to the team .

Mark Wilson has some great ideas and a lot of Knowledge but he is not the coach the MC team needs. Its like College Football he has had 4 years to prove his coaching methodology and it has not worked . Not a dig against Wilson but this is just not his cup of tea it seems . So time to recruit a new coach who will rebuild the team and bring the cup home

Money matches would be a good place to start.
Banning players who aspire to qualify for the MC should not be permitted to play money matches. But only a governing body could do this right? Plus, many of these players rely on MM's to make a living...
---
So what about a gentleman's agreement between the USA's top player... No money matches amongst themselves.
WHY? Because it leaves to much bad blood on the table.
---
Yes some of the Euro's play money matches, but they rarely match up against themselves. Hence, good blood.
---
This is not the only cause (for USA MC failings) but bit by bit the USA must come to terms with where the focus of their game has gone.

Interesting post. I remember Alex P. and Jose Parica telling me that they never gamble among themselves, unless it's chess or cards or something, but never in pool when they're on the road. They stick together, eat together, hang out together. I always admired that about them.

Agree
Though MW did make good call wildcarding Rodney and Bergman who both contributed 2.5 out of 3 points for USA

All of what you are suggesting would have to come from Matchroom. They are the ones actually calling all of the shots other than Mark's two captains pick, which by the way, are the ones playing the best and account for all of their points thus far. As far as announcing in January who the team will be in December would work great if they could do that, but again, Matchroom would have to make that call or eliminate the points system that would then damage the whole infrastructure of a structured tour. Also, if you picked the team, there needs to be a budget from Matchroom to cover all of the expenses of the team to meet regularly as you suggest, otherwise, most players are not making that much $$ to commit to that much travel unless they are getting paid for appearances and exhibitions. However, that is what Mark is trying to do the Ballpark Village style exhibitions, just haven't heard from him how they would determine which players would be available or if they are going to shorten the points race with a tour and have a month or two to do all of the travel and training to do these events. Lastly, in order for Shane to not play, it would have to come from him to step down. He is going to win the points race pretty much every year for the foreseeable future and would have to voluntarily step down, or eliminate the points race all together. Bottom line is under the current format, Mark has not enough time to get them to "come together" as everyone suggests. He has drills, and meetings, and motivational people come in, but it's up to the players to still apply themselves. I am sure if you talk to any of his Lindenwood team players, which there are several great players coming from that program, all will tell you that he is a great coach and motivator.

Do they gamble with eachother now? Lol. Didn't think so.

You guys are trying to blame everything - truth is - the Euros are to blame - they play better than we do at the Cup and for the most part outside the Cup too. Period!
Jason

For this format, the players need to execute flawlessly and make great decisions each and every time at the table.

Therefore, Mark's opening statement that they will just try not to suck, was so over the top and the direct opposite of the attitute that any team would need to win in this format, I say he goes.

What is USA makes a super comeback on final day to lose 9-11 or 10-11?
IMHO I think whether MW goes depends on final score:
If USA lose 6-11 or worse- MW goes
If USA lose 7-11 or better, MW stays

ALL TRUE
So does one roll over like a dog or come out fighting like THE 300?

Jeremy Jones would be an excellent captain. Someone should nominate him.

I think I mentioned him earlier along with Earl. Mainly for their knowledge of the game and being able to see the differences in style of play of each player
Jason

He would never admit it, he would say "oh no, Sky and Bergman and Mike are great players and Rodney is a legend" but in reality he knows Shaw, Feijen, Appleton and Ouschan will shoot any of them into a coma in a proper world class event.

This is clearly false as Bergman just played Shaw earlier this year and tortured him in a race to 80.

The reality of this situation is that while it may be true that some of the Americans are better on their own than they are as a team this should surprise no one. Pool is an individual sport, so it naturally attracts people who are more comfortable playing and competing alone than they are as part of a team. That is exactly why these guys are so good at it!

It's kind a paradox but if you found a group of players who were more comfortable as a team they probably wouldn't be good enough at the actual game to compete.

So why do the Euros do this better? I think part of it might be cultural in that pool is a more serious sport there than it is in the US so it attracts slightly different personalities. They also have a little more camaraderie in general because they don't gamble with each other as much. In America top players are often trying to beat each other out of their money, which is fine and all, they are pool players after all, but this can breed a bit of long term animosity for a time when they have to play together as in the Mosconi Cup.

Anyways I think a lot of this might be overthinking things because if you watch the matches the Euros are making tons of mistakes, just like the Americans. They're just not getting punished for them, plain and simple.

I know quite a few guys in the various leagues I shoot on (including some inspirational captains) who could probably do better. This is just plain embarrassing and borders on the insane when you see what has been going on these past years.

In the business/sports world it's simple...if the company/team does not perform...you ax/can/cut/drop the leadership. Then you tweek the player list until you reach the right combination.

Better luck next year...or the next...or...you get the ideal.

Can't argue with the obvious and the logic here...we just plain stink. What if we have a Mosconi Cup next year and the US team just doesn't show (kinda like they do now but in person)?

This part belongs with the post from the guy who thought Alabama could beat an NFL team. Put down the crack pipe, pal.
