how much would you pay for a scruggs sneaky pete?

TS SP market?

Have seen quite a few "Fancy Scruggs SP's" on ebay go for $500 - $650 in the past year. Many would need a refinish to look presentable and often the shafts are well under 13mm.

Have a knowlegeable player friend who was obsessive over my TS swirly bacote, black buttcapp w/logo, white black white joint collars and perfect 12.9mm shaft. Plays like a killer. He offered $800 cash last winter - I turned it down. I've always thot I'd love to get my speed up to my equip;). I'm workin on it.

Had a new Bob Frey coco SP, couldn't get excited about it and sold it within a few weeks. Have a Diveney butterfly SP now that plays kick ass and is as close to the TS as I've found. The shaft taper is a kinda firm with a good backbone.

No way you'd go wrong paying up to $350 for the right older style sneaky. It sure wouldn't lose any value if kept in shape, they'll be higher next year!

I thought Frey SP's would hit similar to TS SP's - what have you found to be the difference?

Who the Heck knows!?

Hey,

What I noticed with the "New" Frey cue I had awhile back is that it felt very solid when hitting a ball; it had a 3/8-10 SS wood to wood with an Ebony Butt; however, I had a TS SP (Hustler) with a Cocobola Butt with a 5/16-14 piloted joint -- hated it -- PRETTY but not my fav???

I had a TS SP 5/15-14 piloted joint (think it's Bacote...not sure) that I had traded for this Cocobola TS but, I had to get my old TS back since it HIT SO SWEET

Anyways, my feeling/opinion is this: certain things make a difference -- the pin, the butt handle, the joint, the ferrule, the tip, the weight and the balance point -- but really, we are all just different....personal preferences are what RULE :D

I'm gonna go downstairs now and try to build a jump break -- catch ya'll L8er ;)

Other than weight, I doubt the wood in the butt makes that significant of a difference given all the other factors you mentioned - forearm wood is the main thing. I wonder about things like the olivewood forearm Zylr advertised currently, or cored bacote forearms like the Carmeli jazznpool has. But good point about the joint and pin size of Frey/Scruggs SP's - I had forgotten that Frey's new SP's use a bigger pin.

Sold

SOLD to the highest bidder.....how many do you want Joe :p :p :p

Actually, you might be surprised at the difference in what the wood handle makes Scott! The Cocobola (I love cocobola) TS cue I had shot aok but, it had a completely different hit/feel to me.

If you get up to B'Ham sometime I'll show you the differences ;)

Have a Great Weekend! :D

The TS has a very similar hit and balance, maybe a slightly stiffer taper than the Frey I had. The 5/16 X 14 joint vs 3/8 X 10 might of made a difference also. The points were raised a bit on the slightly lighter coco Frey. ** It all boils down to personal preference.**

AWESOME collection KRB!

Is "Hustler" the proper term for SP's with a rambo ring, buttcap and joints? Think we sometimes get the terms SP and Hustler jumbled around. Is "fancy SP" the same as a "Hustler"? Don't mean to hijack the thread to argue semantics, just trying to clarify the names we attach to specific cue styles.

Thanks Jig!

That's a good question.....the local B'Ham guy who got me interested in TS cues was the first person to refer to the TS cue with the Hoppe ring as a Hustler

I'm really not sure if that's correct but, it's not very sneaky :D .....I've noticed the term "Fancy" used alot too ;)

Wow I hope that crack head goes back!!

What year are you talking about 1940. You're brain dead if you beleive they were selling for 75.00. You must be in the twilite zone. I've known Tim since early 80's & they weren"t that CHEAP then. I'm curious why you would even post something like that unless some crack head was stealing them & bumpin at that $$$ figure.

Daniel -

I can assure you I am not brain dead, (no chance asking my wife thou). I posted it because this was what I was told. It was a little weird as this posting came up the exact day we were talking about it.

Good luck in pool and drugs too Daniel.

$300 max, its just a bar stick with a joint for christ sake

SO DOES THIS MEAN THAT YOU FEEL, THAT NO SNEAKY PETE BAR CUE CONVERSION IS WORTH MORE THAN 300, OR JUST TIM'S?

I'm becoming quite a fan of SP's - the inlays, veneers, fancy buttcaps - don't add to playability, only $$$

The plain 80's wood-to-wood Scruggs SP I had played exceptionally well. For that reason, I bought another one and paid a little more than market value (if $300 is market) because I haven't seen any like that on the market lately and don't feel like waiting. So I'm an idiot...I'm a happy idiot.
