How often does your pattern/plan change. Rarity for me last night.

Playing some eightball last night. I broke and pocketed one ball. I surveyed the table and saw a great layout that would get around the table and breakup two trouble balls touching each other and kissing the rail. I got through the rack almost exactly as I envisioned it for the break and run out.

I'm thinking to myself "when was the last time that happened". I'll break and run out once about every 6-9 racks but the plan always changes if I don't get the exact shape I'm looking for, or if I see that making an adjustment in the pattern might work better. How often does this happen with you guys? Are you guys constantly changing plans midrun or are you guys more consistant than that?

In 8-ball, I am constantly changing plans mid-run, usually from hitting the cue ball a tad too hard on the previous shot. But then, a break-n-run isn't very common with me in 8-ball, so I usually give up the table and by the time I get back, everything's changed. 9-ball is a little different for me. I will have an occasional break-n-run, and I have had some games like the one you described above where everything works out as planned. Feels good, don't it?

That's amazing! We were just talking about this very truth in another thread a few days ago. It's incredibly rare to run 8-ball as envisioned from start to finish. In fact, so much so, I can't even say I map-out anymore. I assess which balls are problems and which balls can be used to help me solve my problems and which balls are worthless and then prioritize.

That actually makes me feel better. Sitting inbetween racks I'm thinking to myself "well you think you're a good player but a true good player would have that sense of acomplishment after every break and runout". I may start looking at 8 ball differently and concentrate on short runs and solving problem areas rather than attempting to map out the whole grid up front. I suppose that might help me be less frustrated with my vision.

Maniac - yes it felt damn good:D

Many times after pocketing a few balls, even though you get perfect position on the next ball, you may want to change the pattern because now there is not so much clutter on the table and at this point you may now see a better and more defined pattern. This is the nature of eight ball.
