I have had alot of support from my family about my passion for pool. Mostly my husband and my dad. They are my stable force behind me.
And then I do have some family members that just really dont understand. LOL.
I have slowly tried to involve them more, so they can get a glimpse of why I love this sport so much.
Just wondering if there are others out there that have people around them in their lives that really dont understand the passion and love that you have for this great sport.
Just like anyother passion you have. Once it bites you, Its Forever!!!!
I would love to hear your storys!!!!!!

theyd rather i be golfing, i suck at golf.

Pool aint a big problem its my drinkin and partying they dont agree with.

As long as i pay my own bills ill do what i want.

No problems here. My wife started playing pool when we first started dating many moons ago and she's a pretty solid B player now that is a threat if she's shooting really good that day.

My mom really hasn't ever said anything one way or the other. Dad passed away in 1990 but he never really said anything to me about it back then.

As for trying to involve the people that just don't get it, might as give it up. Imagine them trying to involve you in one of their boring past times. To them it's the best thing since sliced bread........same thing.

Seperate lives

I think most pool players live sort of a side life when it comes to pool. It's a hard sport to play because it takes so much time and money to advance in skills. It's definitely a lonely road to take. Appreciate your skills and other players that make the journey with you. Even if they are your opponents.

Some of my closest friends are my opponents. LOL

Yes, it sometimes can be a lonely road. I do experience some awesome moments with players who have become great friends. I wouldnt trade that for the world!!!!!!

What a great question !!!!

My family hated it and despised pool completely and I have been playing avidly since 1986 and if that wasn't enough, I got into doing cue repairs and recovering tables shortly after and went into business for myself in 1993 then became a professional cuemaker so you know that really pissed them off ! but they are all dead now and all that's left is my 94 yr old grandma that I take care of and she hates what I do especially since my shop is here at the house and she has to see pool cues and hear phone conversations with customers non stop....

And if that wasn't enough every girl I have ever met since I was 16 "1986" was in a poolroom and the funny part about it is that they knew what I did and that I took it very seriously and pool wasn't a hobby when they met me and then several months later in the relationship all of a sudden they have a problem with it and want me to quit or they will leave... " ironic don't you think?" well I guess that explains why I've never been married and never had a extensive relationships but I do find it quite odd they they didn't have a problem with me spending my pool earnings on them with nice dinners and entertainment !!!

In the end it's a lonely lifestyle and profession but I am who I am and would NEVER trade it regardless... because If I had to do it all over again I would still be a cuemaker/player because I love it !

Just to let you know that you are NOT alone with family resistance and non-support of your passion !!!

Take care, Eddie Wheat

Before, I opened a pool hall my wife really was not excited about me going out to play pool. However, when she saw the money we could make doing what I love to do she never said another word!!!!!!!!!

My family supports me all the way!

My beautiful kids, whenever I place in a
competition, would be the ones to
proudly display the trophy in our trophy
stand, which includes the countless medals
and trophies they received in school.

They will always place my trophy in front
of everything else. However, I always
remind them that such should be placed at the
back - behind their medals and all - because
truth be told, i am very proud of their accomplishments,
and prouder still because they are growing up
with their feet on the ground.

Yet, they will not have none of it - and will
place my new trophy in front of everything else!

Still, i will rearrange 'em all, and put theirs
in front of everything else!

:)

P.S.

And oh! My eldest daughter accompanies
me (whenever there is no school) to one
of the pool clubs I play in during the awarding
ceremony.

You see, she awards the trophies for the Class C
category of the club. And I kid you not!

:)

I get a lot of why do you play pool by yourself??? type questions...

you either get it or you don't...

The only time it ever effected my life was when my wife found out I dropped $500 on a cue then dropped $200 on a shaft for the expensive cue.. then another hundo for a cheap case and assorted accessories. in one afternoon..

she still throws it out there when we get to arguing...

some get it... some don't... and the ones that don't... never will.

Not exactly playing pool but I am an avid collector of cues and cases. My family just does not understand it. I always get a response like "you cannot play with them all so why have so many"? They all see it as a waste of time and a COMPLETE waste of money. I never buy junk. I always buy items that appreciate by the day such as my Fellini starburst and python cases for example. To me it's no different than someone who collects coins or stamps.

Thanks, John

You need to change the kinda women you hang out with...LoL.!! If I was married to a cue maker, I am afraid I would be a huge PITA! I would be in the shop all the time checking out what was being done at any given time...trying to help out, make suggestions for designs or wood combos...etc....a bona fide PITA!! :bash:

Actually, my ol' man and I met over a pool table...or rather, he saw my a$$ straddled over the corner of a pool table...LoL. We have been together and playing pool ever since. He's not much for going out to compete...said he did enough of that in his younger days. But he supports me going out to play in tournies and leagues 100%. Both my kids play, and we are currently teaching his daughter to play...and everyone has their own cue. He even added a 2nd floor to his shop and handed me the cash and said, "Go pick out a table."

So, I guess you could say I get great support for my passion on the homefront.

my parents wernt the happiestn but they saw I was happy so they were too,m I told them I woukd learn businsess skills in the pool room, they believed me, and I valadated that statment year later, I was a half assed player on a good day, i just dont have great coordination, but I move good and bet good etc. and never lost $$$ overal in the pool room, i gave my mom a running total she liked the numbers than a job, we wernt well off, just ok and my parents knew I didnt have a gambling problem so over time they gave me their support which felt great, there was no stopping me anyways, looking back I dont regret a thing,

I had a few girls I lost because of pool, good riffence, my girl now I couldnt be happier , tollerates it but is warming up to it and likes cues, she had fun front row at the Mosconi Cup this past year, so She will be a convert sooner than later, I love her and we give each other lots of room thats the key to our sucessful relationship,

its great to have the right girl, never settle, tell then the bad syuff about yu up front then you never have to live a lie, no girl is better than a girl under fales pretences about your charcter.

I would not stay with a woman that complained about my hobby. I let them know up front that I'm a pool player and "no matter how much I love you, pool is a part of my life that I will not give up for you or anyone else." Luckily my wife is the type of person that takes interest in things that I do. She learned to play pool, pretty damn well too, she also got into hard rock music after meeting me. She wants to see AC/DC. God love her.

That's great ! It's always good to have the significant other's support....

My "girlfriend" Tracey has her own career (FBI Forensics) and she likes what I do "so far !" so hopefully I get to keep this one for a change.... she's a real sweetheart with a completely laidback persona and a heavy tennessee accent "very sexy by the way".... not your typical stick in the mud federal agent at all !!!

My 16yr old daughter Jessi also likes what I do too.. she thinks it's pretty cool so I guess that accounts for something as well in this pitiful pool consumed lifestyle of mine... but like I said before I wouldn't change it for anything ! I have met some wonderful people and have made a few close friends out of this committment and it's been worth every painstaking and rewarding second of it !

The true show of support is that they let me vent on those nights when I come home beating myself up because I made a stupid mistake which cost me placing in the money...or rant over the guys that try to pull one over on me and when I catch them at it...start telling me girls don't know nothing about pool.

He's no angel, but he's basically a good guy...LoL.

My parents always supported my playing, so that was never an issue. My wife found out early on when we were dating that pool was my "mistress". She joined my APA team, traveled to tournaments with me, attended trade shows, and even learned how to run tournaments when we ran an amateur 9-ball tour. When we got married, she had a custom made wedding ring designed for me with a 9-ball rack and a diamond in the middle of the rack. I couldn't ask for more support!

I would love to see some pics of the ring, Steve!

It's my first time to hear of such! And I kid you not!

Awesome!

My wife has no interest whatsoever in pool and that is fine with me. She doesn't interfer with anything I do and it works.
My kids are grown and play pool once in a while in bars, but I don't think they'd care if ever pool table vanished from the face of the earth tomorrow. While maybe they'd feel bad for their old man, but they personally wouldn't miss them.
I'm a solitary pool player in my family and I have no problem with that at all.

Well blame my mother for starting me in Pool, as in the 1954, or 1955 I think it was when she started dropping me off at the old Boy Club in Miami (before there were boy & gwirls clubs). The Boys Club was on her way to work, and each Saturday I got dropped there 2 hours before it opened.

Mom died in 1988.

My Dad is still alive, will be 88 this year, and does not understand the game, or why I still play, and do not win ever time I play.

The other half is supportive, but personally could care less about the competitive aspects of pool, as she likes watching NFL football.

I have tried to teach her Pool, but she in not that interested in the game.

NUFF SAID.
