How strong is the Ohio pool scene?

This tournament is legendary, I used to go play in it sometimes and in no particular order Steve Cook , Gary Spaeth , Jason Miller, Frank Ruby, Joe Brown, Stanley Morycz {sp} the " Chief" {the coney island kid }, and another handful of really good players played every week , you had to be a really good player to get to 10th place or above.
The new guys you mentioned were all just kids when I was going there , but they all play great.
There is nothing better for a pool players growth than to be surrounded by excellent players , the learning curve is much sharper and higher quality.

I won a few of those Monday Night tournaments, but that was 25 years ago and I couldn't win anything now.

I meant Sunday tournament, usually 1-2 pm start time , with summer coming it may start later.

Try

Where can you play on the west side of cleveland these days? Is it just River City or are there other good options? I go to westlake for a few days every year (grew up near there).

Try Continuous Play , it is owned by Joe Toth a pretty good player who loves one pocket. The room has Diamond 9 footers that are maintained by Joe. I do not know his exact hours but his address and ph. # are - 5573 Pearl Rd. , 44129 the ph. Is 440-842- 5177.

Thanks! I'll check it out.

Another thought is that the US Amateur Qualifier at 8 ball sports bar produced both men's and women's champions this year although the winners were not from Ohio just saying very tough qualifier....

The SBE Open Amateur Players Champion (9-ball) this year is Alex Olinger from a field of 960 players. He was back at Airway Billiards on Monday night.

I was wondering the same thing how can a player that has beaten top pro players in pro events play amateur events I've personally watched this guy destroy big name players around the Cincinnati area for years in my opinion that's like letting sky Woodward play a amateur events after having the year he has had so far on the right day this guy can beat anybody on a bar box

Pro, amateur, tough call and on the bubble IMO. But if you think he plays like Sky you have Alex way over rated and Sky way under rated, that's not anywhere near a close game. There are 4-5 guys in Ohio alone who are the favorite playing Alex

No dought there are 4-5 guys that maybe favorite on a big table from ohio but I did say bar box he can beat anyone in the country on the right day big table game is maybe a step under some of the heavy hitters as far as comparing sky to Alex I no sky is killing it right now but like I said on the right day Alex can beat anyone on a bar box here is example why I don't think he should be playing amateur events

I was talking about the bar table, not big table.

More than one touring pro on that list of 12 names that Alex is at the top of don't have full list of entrants but if I'm not mistaken there was svb and Bergman and a lot of other big names there also but don't quote me on that as I no they have played those tournament's but don't have entry list for that exact date my opinion is if your playing pool for a living you shouldn't be playing amateur events

Saw

Thanks, All good players there.
Was just wondering if you had
someone on your list that I didn't
know about.

take care, Carl

Bartram
Dee Adkins
Shannon Murphy
Shane Winters
Danny Smith
Billy Thorpe

Not true. Chris Bartram and Danny Smith are truly better. I saw him play Danny Smith in a race to 30 and a race to 21. Alex lost both times by about 8-10 games.

Billy Thorpe and Alex are good friends but when they play Alex almost always wins. And they have played a lot.

Shane Winters, Shannon Murphy, and Alex all play pretty close. I'd give the edge to Alex though.

I haven't seen Dee Adkins play enough to comment on him.

Adam Smith is also better than Alex and I think he lives in Columbus now.

Alex has played in the Chuggers monthly tournament in Streetsboro about 7 times and has yet to win it. Ohio is strong!!

There is always things going on in Toledo. Saturday there is a junior state 9 ball tournament going on.. I'm excitied to watch that.

Ohio Billiards Play

I agree about the Ohio Pool Scene, it is hopping. I lived in the Dayton/Cincinnati area my whole life before moving to Florida and it is booming down here as well.

There is a 9 Ball tournament at Airway Billiards in Dayton, Ohio on Needmore Road just off Interstate 75 in north Dayton that is one of the best I have seen anywhere. A fella named Hal Johnson used to run it

Entry fee is just $5 and they always have a field of 100 or more players and you just can't have any more fun for that kind of money, and play some of the top players in a 4 state area.

Back in the day(early '70's), the Dayton Open put on by Joe Burns was the place to be. That is where I first saw Buddy Hall straight from western Kentucky show up in his bib overalls and run through everyone there.

Richie Ashburn, St. Louie Louie, The Miz, Jim Rempe, Sigel, Boston Shorty and the list goes on...................
