Does that place still exist? I did a google search and there is a Dello's Rack n Roll that I found. Didn't know it existed, the last time I was in NE OH, I played at Wickliffe Lanes. My parents still live in Fairport Harbor.

No, rack n roll is long gone. Wickliffe Lanes is still going strong. I think they have 12 tables.

Drumm's Family Billiards opened last fall in Newark Ohio just east of Columbus. Seems to be doing well so far. 4 9's 4 8's 8 BB and 1 billiard table. Has a couple of leagues and has had some tournaments. 1 drew about 90 players (it went a little long 😉). Hope it continues. It's been a while since Newark had a room.

That place is long long gone. It was Dello's when I first was there until a management change helped along by the feds.

When I was being interviewed to work there Dello's wife asked me why I wanted to work there. I told her so I could play for free. She liked the answer and I spent from open to close in there until I quit.

Hopefully things come around for pool again like when I worked there. We'd start taking reservations for tables at 11am when the doors opened. If you reserved one for 10pm and got it by closing you were lucky.

Tournaments in Ohio

You are hard pressed to go to any Open, money-added event and not run into extremely tough action. I have lived in Missouri, Illinois, and Wisconsin. By far, Ohio has the best pool scene with respect to depth of players, action, and tournaments. There are some good establishments around here too with great equipment. I have played in several events where there are pros or road players along with the local short-stops. You can find tournaments for every type of game: 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball, straight pool, banks, 3-cushion (not sure where on this one anymore as the weekly event at Sportsmens in Columbus is done since they closed), and one-pocket. Barbox and 9-ft tournaments as well as action in every pool hall. Not to mention there have been several high stakes games as of late in our state along with open challenges for a $5K minimum bet playing the likes of Shane Winters and Danny Smith. Toss in Michigan, W. Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana and it is a shark-infested region of the United States for sure.

In Columbus, OH

You have Players Family Billiards (Dee Adkins) in Whitehall, Bankshot Billiards in Hilliard, Cushions Billiards in Westerville, and The 8-Ball Sportsbar in Columbus. You can find action in any of those pool halls. They all host tournaments. The best equipment and toughest action will be at Players. As far as top players living in the area...Tony Mougey, Kevin Tomlin, Dee Adkins, Adam Smith, Chris Bartram, Dylan Lipatapanlop, and several others that play just below some of the ones I have listed.

Another thought is that the US Amateur Qualifier at 8 ball sports bar produced both men's and women's champions this year although the winners were not from Ohio just saying very tough qualifier....

This is great. I've been living in the pool epicenter and didn't even know it!

Actually, Kickin' Chicken called Ohio the pool epicenter a while back...
...I liked it.

A few times when I was a kid, I'd be taking I-75 south to Florida.....
...and it would take me a month to get out of Ohio.

Even the small towns had a player that could stop a road player's trip.

Hi Shev! Haven't see you here for a while! Were you at DCC this year? Hope to see you again next time I'm coming through Lima!

Alex O, Billy Thorpe, Ryan Stone, TJ Beck, Jason Miller, Liz Lovely, Dee Adkins are some more from Ohio, and there are plenty more. At the Derby back in the Executive West days Big Nasty said if you see someone in a white T shirt in action they are from Ohio. When he said that every table in the action room had a least one person from Ohio on it.

I live super close to kings of billiards and i work a mile from fiddlestix. if anyone ever wants to practice some let me know.

I love both those rooms and the tournament each of them hold really seem to keep the weekends busy.

Where can you play on the west side of cleveland these days? Is it just River City or are there other good options? I go to westlake for a few days every year (grew up near there).

Last night in Dayton, Airway Billiards had their Monday night open 9- ball tournament. $5 entry, double elimination, 42 players including Billy and Alex O. The place was packed. Lots of fun. Whenever I am in town, I stop by to play or just watch.

This tournament is legendary, I used to go play in it sometimes and in no particular order Steve Cook , Gary Spaeth , Jason Miller, Frank Ruby, Joe Brown, Stanley Morycz {sp} the " Chief" {the coney island kid }, and another handful of really good players played every week , you had to be a really good player to get to 10th place or above.
The new guys you mentioned were all just kids when I was going there , but they all play great.
There is nothing better for a pool players growth than to be surrounded by excellent players , the learning curve is much sharper and higher quality.

South

Once you go south of Cleveland I would say Pool is booming. There really are no rooms in the area. Like someone mentioned the only place to really play is a Bowling Alley. Akron , Canton and all points South are doing very well.
