Lately i have been playing so inconsistant that its frustrated me to the point that ive thought about quitting if it doesnt change. Are there any keys or things that can be done to make you play more consistant? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

How to Achieve Consistency

1. Every player has the ability to hit the cue ball really hard and with accuracy. When you can control a very hard stroke, a soft to medium stroke becomes easy.
2. Every player has to find out what stance, bridge type and length, arm swing and head position works best for them. Keep making changes until you discover the right combination.
3. It is said that to master the art of billiards, it's necessary to practice at least 10,000 strokes before perfection can be expected or achieved.
4. Practice. Practice. Practice.
5. Observe how the Pros do it: Let their skill give you the desire to achieve a high level of proficiency.
6. Don't worry about missing shots - pocket billiards is not horse shoes! It's important to stroke, stroke, stroke. Shot making ability will increase in direct proportion to the amount of time spent practicing.
7. Playing against someone is not practice.
8. Keep the faith and Good Luck.

Change the 10,000 strokes to 10,000 hours.... At a stroke an hour I think you would even have Kid delicious talking to himself..........

its all in your pre shot routine, sighting, alignment, stance, bridge arm and hand, backstroke and pause, follow through and finish. And knowing what your natual rhythm is, and finding it. Also your eye pattern might be out as well.
My coaching book will be out soon and it explains how to achieve consistancy.

Quitting, no way!

The fact that you want to improve so much that it makes you want to quit, is all the more reason to stick with it..., if you care enough to become frustrated, you care enough to improve.

It take a little time. Keep the game as simple as you can, work on shot to shot angles with someone who plays the way that you want to and your game will improve.

Get the book "How Would You Play This" by George Fels. Its a great book, short, but full of ways to think the angles...., stay with it, good luck!

The best way I have found to become consistant is to "practice how you play" etc.. give every shot your full attention. I have found that if you find the table furthest away from everything and everyone works best.

In a perfect world, it's easy to be consistent. If you work or have any kind of life, being consistent isn't easy but it's not impossible.

If your life is a mess, your game is probably in the same state. Try to find a consistency in your life and your pool game will probably follow suit.

Put the time in you need to be consistent. If you don't, it can't happen.

Get to your tournaments or league nights early. Give yourself a chance to perform well.

play more hours more often.

i know that sounds like a over simplification, but its not-its the best solution. And stay in action, that gives you a reason to play hard.

Depends what your inconsistencies are. Ball making ability, safety play ,positional errors, bad posture, poor stroke? You need to identify your weaknesses and work on that. One great drill is slow roll ball pocket speed full table shots for eye coordination , stroke and ball making.

I agree with this. Usually if I find myself being inconsistent I go back to my fundamentals and it corrects the flaw/flaws that are causing the inconsistencies. Have someone who knows what to look for watch you play. It is easier for someone else to pick up on flaws in your stance/stroke etc.

Hang in there and good luck.

imo this is the best reply so far.

i am a perfect example of some one letting lifes problems affecting your consistency.

when i first joined a league 5 years ago i rose up to a bcapl 7 by the end of the year. i now currently fluctuate between an apa 4 or 5.

here is why the big change in my pool game. when i joined the bca i was self employed making a good living then my biz folded. i lost everything including my wife and son. i quit pool . after trying to to find a decent job with no luck i took a job as a plunbers helper making less than i paid my laborers . i got hurt a few years later resulting in 29% loss of the use of my right hand and forearm. was out of work for a year. met a girl who wanted me to join her apa league last year.

i have not been able to get back to the level i was before yet. there are days when i am able to block out that i am still strugling financially, ignore the pain thats in my hand constantly, and all of lifes other little problems. on the days i am able to block everything out i shoot to my old ability. example; beating a 7 in a 4-6 race in 3 innings last month. then i have days like when my son calls me and says he misses me. i go to league with that on my mind and lose to a 2 in 10 innings.

now that is being inconsistent !

when i have those inconsistent days its strictly mental, not something wrong with my stance , stroke ,aiming etc etc.

1 step back, 2 steps forward

The first thing to do is keep reading this forum. There is a ton of good advice here and it is free. Second thing is buy yourself a video camera and record yourself practicing. View that recording as you practice ie shoot a rack then watch yourself. Be critical of your technique. Compare what you are doing to what is suggested here. Correcting any technical flaws will help you be more consistent. Have fun and shoot well. Changing things may take you a step back initially but will move you two steps forward with enough practice.

Here is a stupid question.

I am a new league player. League director has me at a handicap 7.
Why does 10-20 minutes of warmup shooting balls make such a big difference ? I'm talking about sinking balls, not getting a feel for the speed of the table.

It's not a athletic sport. It's not like I forgot my fundamentals and then suddenly remembered them while warming up.

Curious what is really happening during the warmup. I know everyone is different, but something is obviously going on since most people play better after warming up. Maybe if I knew what, I could cut down on the warmup time.

Go back to Lee Brett's comment. In order to be consistant you have to perform his entire list exactly the same every shot. A consistant player doesn't mean you're a good player either. This is why a good coach can help fine tune Lee's list.

The other problem I see is its tough to self evaluate our game. We sometimes kid ourselves.

Now to answer your question without seeing what occured, and knowing nothing of your game, I'd guess you fell into your rhythm while practicing and carried it to the match.

Is This the Jordan I used to play in Liberty?

If so let me know. I can't imagine it not being the same.
