How To Be An Expert At Calling Fouls

Your league rules may differ from the BCA Standardized rules but this information may give you a better understanding of the rules.

First: Read the BCA rule book available here at AZ Billiards for a couple of bucks. This states what the various fouls are.

Second: Watch these high speed videos that are used for teaching referees.
http://billiards.colostate.edu/

NV B.61 - Pool rules quiz for referees and players, with Bob Jewett
NV B.62 - Answers to pool rules quiz for referees and players
NV B.63 - Instruction for pool rules quiz
part 1: CB frozen to OB
part 2: small gap between the CB and OB
part 3: rail cut shots
part 4: balls frozen to rails
part 5: determining which ball is hit first
part 6: miscellaneous fouls
out-takes

There is also a 100 question test for various shots and see how you score. Are you better than your average high school scores (lol)?

Third: Share this information with your league players or playing buddies.

Fourth: Thank Dr. Dave and Bob Jewett for putting this together.

The videos are another great learning resource from Dr. Dave and Bob J. and deserve to be cited periodically. I thought I had a pretty good hold of the subject but only scored seventy-some percent on the test....always something to learn.

Shot 15

Legal at that distance to the side pocket due to frozen, straight ahead, small punch draw stoke?

Still legal if 8 foot straight-in shot to corner, where cb stops/checks up from draw about a diamond from corner, when hit with more forceful draw stroke?

Or is this a 'push' foul? There doesn't seem to be a double hit (don't feel it)? Where both balls travel together most of the way, then separate near the end as the draw slows the cb to a stop.

OP-thanks for link-good stuff.

The shot was more or less a normal stroke, but a little shorter stroke than typical of most pool shots. You are permitted any legal stroke towards a frozen ball. That would include break-shot speed with follow.

How do you become an expert and getting some moron arguing with you to shut his mouth and submit to your correct interpretation of a hit? That's what we really need. :)

When the balls are frozen it's always legal to push but if there is a gap here is a good way to test. Try loading up your tip with a ton of chalk then take a striped ball that has no chalk marks on it. Execute your shot then check to see if there is one chalk mark or two.

Who was it that said free stuff is worth what you pay for it?? They obviously haven't seen this material.

100%.

I did the test before I went to Vegas and took the Ref School. I didn't fare too well.

After the Ref School, I redid the test and scored much better. To the point that I felt very comfortable with what I knew.

The Ref School was quite hurried and if it weren't for the Ref Quiz, I probably wouldn't have been anywhere close to being able to ref a game.
The school gives you a nice start but it takes considerable experience, the kind you can only get from being there and practicing and making calls. So, here were the calls, right in front of your face. All you had to do is watch and pay attention.

You can know the Rule book inside out, but this is where the meat is, being able to call a shot.

There are many shots, as demonstrated in the quiz that are difficult if not impossible to call. You can only try your best.

This was a serious effort by Dave and Bob. Thanks guys.
