How to clean pool balls by hand?

Get some ball polish intended for pool balls. I like Aramith and ChemPak.

I thought you had to clean them before polishing. If not I'll get some polish and get busy. Thanks Bob

Aramith both cleans and polishes; it's all you need.
I agree in general, but if someone had spilled their oatmeal onto the balls and it had dried, I'd wash them in plain, warm water first. I hope and assume that's not what Petroboy is dealing with.

Along with the Aramith microfiber cloth. What you use with the cleaner is pretty important. You don't want to scratch the balls with hard abrasive pads.

Nope its just plain old dirt from use, Im going to see if the local hall has some Aramith cleaner and if not I'll order some. Thanks guys I didn't realize it cleaned as well.

I saw a video on YouTube and they said the Chem-Pak has both a fine abrasive and hard carnuba wax in it. I was under the impression that you shouldn't use either of those things on a regular basis. Have I misunderstood?

BTW I also found a video of a pretty spiffy looking manual ball cleaner that look really easy to make. It's like a Diamond cleaner, only you have to spin the platter with a hand crank.

I think you need some abrasive if you want to remove scuff marks. I think both polishes contain mild abrasives. Wax is generally a bad idea. I didn't know that Chem-Pak has any wax -- the label doesn't describe the contents.

What's the best stuff to use to clean balls by hand? Would dish detergent work well?

Dish detergent will do a good job, however, if you plan to clean them on
a regular basis, I would suggest the liquid Ivory soap rather than detergent.

Warm water - use a soft cotton washcloth - I dry with a soft cotton towel.

I used warm water and dish soap on a ball set and it ruined them. Left them very dry and they were clingy afterwards. As though it removed a slippery outer layer.

I would not use anything other than the aramith stuff. Is is pretty cheap, I think it was less than $10 delivered to my door and it has lasted for years.

As for the actual how to, I suggest 2 microfiber cloths and a plastic sandwich bag. Put a ball in the bag, add a drop or 2 of polish and rub the ball in the bag. Take ball out of bag and set it on rag 1 to dry. I do 3 balls like that, Then use rag 2 to get the dried polish off. I finish each ball with the fastest buffing action I can muster by hand. Repeat that process until done.

I bought a diamond polisher. One of the best pool investments I've made. Cleaning balls by hand began to give me thumb pain, and pain in the ass too.

PETROBOY, this is what you want
This stuff cleans your dirty balls, and shines em up real good

I bought some of the Aramith ball cleaner polisher and it works well. I built one of those ball cleaners in a plastic bucket and using it with the Aramith ball cleaner is a good combination.

Nothin' better than a clean/white 100% cotton bar rag dipped and redipped in warm water. Keeps the exterior finish from diminishing quickly and becoming porus. I did it this way for years running three pool rooms. Helps to have a fluffy/thick new bar rag. By limiting the wear on the finish of new ball sets, cleaning actually is easier for a Long time because the ball surface is not porus Yet.

I'll try the glass cleaner. Hope it doesn't hurt the balls.
It depends on the glass cleaner. Don't use any cleaner with chlorine or ammonia. But I think plain warm water is going to do as well as glass cleaner.

The main point of the ball polish is to remove scuffs and make the balls shine. If that's not what you're after, see Island Drive's post just above.
