How To Clean This Measles CB

Magic eraser is an abrasive pad.

Anything you do to alter the finish on a cue ball degrades it IMHO.

I am thinking it is a cheap imitation as has been suggested.

You have already put work into it. How much is your time worth? Consider that compared to the cost of a new ball...they aren't expensive.

Maybe go at it with some aggressive cleaning like abrasives if you think your time is worth it. If you are satisfied with the results then OK.

Easy to clean cue balls and make them new again.

Just let the ball sit in hot water with Dawn dish washing soap for thirty minutes.

Then just scrub with a tooth brush. Then dry and use this old sock I have here with

some dried out car wax on it....LOL

Comes out like new again.

If those aren't cracks caused by phenolic tip, you can try Aramith Ball Cleaner. Toothpaste can work in a pinch, would wipe afterwards with alcohol to remove solvent residue.
Toothpaste and then you'll have to polish it Twice.

I would never use a strong abrasive like a magic eraser. Your cb will turn out good looking but you will encounter an even greater problem afterwards. It will accumulate chalk smudges a lot faster after the abrasive treatment in the future due to micro scratches.

I use Aramith Ball Restorer (very sparingly and only when the ball is really messed up like yours) and afterwards Aramith Ball Cleaner - which is better for polishing to a perfect finish. If the cb is just slightly dirty, Ball Cleaner is the better choice and I use that 99% of the time.

I would also be careful what to use for surface treatment. A very good analysis was done by DrDave and the effects of some stuff are really amazing. Watch the video:

Can someone pleas elaborate on the counterfeit indicators?

It has been said that some of the counterfeit ones have measles not appearing to be "3D", more like painted on. Some knock-offs are supposed to have 8 measles instead of 6.

I am no expert at this as I don't own one of the obvious fakes. But, according to that info the ball shown in this thread should be a genuine Aramith. I suspect either smoke or some other kind of grime on this ball. This is also supported by the good picture here where you can see all kinds of different shades from off-white to very yellowish. Possibly, a thorough cleaning with Ball Restorer and then Ball Cleaner would alleviate or completely remove this problem.

I am pretty sure the dcp is not a smoker, but I guess I dont know, really.

Thanks for the input.

Oh...and to those who own gold crowns- dcp and I have 4s.

The pockets get stuff stuck to them and are easily cleaned with turpentine on a rag.

Magic eraser is equivalent to 1000-1800 grit. I wouldn't use in this situation, it will remove that shiny finish on your cueball.

Looks like a fake measle cue ball.

The distance of the red dots don't match the real cue ball when comparing.

Yeah, looks like a fake measles ball.. I've seen a few do that, but not
real Aramiths.. BTW, sometimes Dawn liquid soap works wonders..
cleaned a blue circle with a little Dawn and warm water, super clean.

So how does it compare to the "fake" measles ball? Any noticeable differences or is the old one just that, an old and grimy original? How about a pic side by side?

Pic is attached.

On the left is the first one I bought about 10-12 years ago.

In the middle is the one I just recently used, the one with all the smudges I was referring to. As you can see the toothpaste really helped clean it up. It doesn't quite shine as much as the new one but if I took some Aramith polish/cleaner to it I bet it would be fine.

And on the right is the brand new one that I received yesterday.

Playability wise I cant tell much difference but you can see the visual difference. The first one from years ago, on the left, is a lot more pale, almost yellowish, than the others.

Thank you, DrCue's Protege. In the picture I can't see a significant difference between the new cb and the middle one. Do the measles appear to be the same in both, i.e. do they both look "3D"?

The picture suggests a size difference but I am pretty sure that is due to the photographic angle in the pic itself, right?
