How to explain a Cue purchase to the GF/wife

Ok guys what is the best way to explain a high end cue purchase to the GF/wife? Or even a non-pool playing friend?

I for one am getting tired of people looking at me like I am nuts for spending even 250 on a cue. Let alone the other day I showed a friend of mine pics of a loaded Gina, then he called me a retard for even contemplating buying the cue(asking 9k). He told me "there is no piece of wood on the planet worth that much". I neglected to tell him about the 60k Bushka that just happened to belong to Whimpy.

Anyway how do you all do it????

Seriously though, just explain it as your hobby and passion. Thats the way i explain mine, plus like previous posters have said some cues appreciate in value. Plus pool isn't as expensive as some other hobbies: golf, collecting cars etc.

If it is a true friend, you may want to listen to them! They may be watching your back. As to the GF/wife that kind of $ always needs to discussed and agreed upon.....unless it's okay with you if they go out and spend that kind of $ on something that you view as frivolous also. JMO

In my house , I just smile real big and wink. Then I hand my credit card over to Michael Hoang when she isn't looking.lol

I really just talk it over with my wife and see what we can afford. I normally only buy a high dollar cue(1k plus every 2 or 3 years). I buy jump breaks like they are going out of style however.
My wife knows how I feel about pool and that I am very passioniate about the sport. So she kinda puts up with alot. Plus for me, I don't have any other hobbies. Lots of guys have one or two sometimes three hobbies and that adds up. I just have pool so even though I buy a high dollar cue ever so often, in the long run it isn't too bad.

Plus if you aren't just going to be buying high dollar cues left and right then the cost is easier to rationilize. A good cue can last you years and years, which then you can spread the cost out over the time you have had the cue.
 
After 22 years with mine I don't have to explain anything I just buy it she understands how much I love the game and as long as I don't take money from the important things such as mortgage she is ok with it.

Oh and that's why I got a part time job so I could pay for my beautiful hobby. :thumbup:

I tell mine that it is like buying a antique! All it does is at very worst is stay at the value you paid for it. 99% of the time it goes up in value. It is like depositing money into a CD at the bank. You will get interest on it, you just don't know how much yet!

Honey, you know that outfit you just bought for $650? Well I just bought this cue fot $500 and it will never go out of style, It will go up in value, and I won't grow out of it:eek: Johnnyt
 
Hopefully she has a 1,000 dollar Gucci purse or some shit like that that you can point to and just smirk and walk away.

People will spend money on their interests. Find out what your friends hobby is and then find out how much he spends on really good equipment, parts, whatever for that hobby. It's exactly the same.

And I kid you not! :)


Or maybe you could tell 'em the story
about the 7-Cow Cue.

I hang with a lot of bikers.... not high end hells angels or anything but hardcore Harley people.. and I get laughed at for all my pool expenditures..... the one that made me laugh most was a 50+ year old woman sitting on her brand new (at the time) 2007 Harley.. looking at me with wide eyes and she said.... "You spent $500 for a pool cue??? how can you waste that much money on a hobby???"

as she sits on her $20,000 toy that she can only play with for 4-5 months a year.....

that one slayed me...

the next time your GF complains about a new cue... check the price tags on her shoes and her purse.... then ask how many more shoes and purses she owns.... you WILL win the argument..
