How to handle slow players?

I handled them by not playing them no matter how much money I could take from them. To me most very slow players are sharking you or have to drum up the balls to shoot. If you notice most slow players play safe a lot...a lot. Johnnyt

If you're wondering and worrying about how to handle a slow player, you can stop wondering and worrying about it. You've already been handled. By them, intentionally or not.

If something your opponent is doing while they're at the table bothers you, you're letting them get to you.

It can be a hard lesson to learn, but there's nothing you can do to influence the game while you're in the chair, unless you're a sharking d-bag.

Everyone's rhythm is the same in the chair. It's standing up and pulling off the cold shot when you are back at the table that shows what kind of player you are.

Well said!

HighEndCues has the right answer. When you are being slow-played don't change your rhythm. A guy told me one time to win playing nine-ball all you have to do is shoot all the balls off the table. The dominator wins all the money not the guy that plays the slowest. When I played regular I was a slow player I know.......Pinocchio.......

Exactly. On the off-chance he's doing it just to screw with you... if a slow player sees you take
twice as long as usual, he's gonna be laughing inside and thinking "mission accomplished".

People think making him wait will bore or upset him... if that were the case, his own slow play
would be sharking him. Even though he's at the table and not trapped in the chair, standing around
with the cue in your hand is boring if you're already 100% done thinking about the shot
and you're simply stalling.

Trying to beat a slow player at his own game will just make you play worse.
It might also get you warned by the TD. And if the slow play wasn't intentional, it makes you look
like kind of an ass.

Right you are. We have one slow player in town. I nicknamed him Cobweb. He ducks every other ball and takes 30 practice swings on every shot. He only gambles with kids that are just learning the game. As a result, just about everybody will turn him down when he wants to play. I won't play in a 4 way game with him. He gets one game a week. A 9 ball race to 7 will take an hour with him.

Back in '88 at the Tennessee 9 Ball Open, Wade Crane broke and ran 6 racks on this guy and the guy laid his stick down across the table and went to the bathroom for 10 minutes. He came back out, racked the balls and Wade didn't make a ball on the break. I guess he cooled off. The guy wins that game then proceeds to break and run 3 racks. Wade laid his stick down across the table and went over to the bar and sat down for 10 minutes. The whole house busted out laughing. The guy didn't dare say anything about it. :D

Watch US bar table championship 2013. jason klatt circles the table 5x before every shot. Won it too.

He's a good example - I wonder if people here would consider him a slow player, and if so, is he doing it to piss his opponent off?

sometimes yes you do it to piss off your opponent, in this case i think he is playing slow to keep himself relaxed.

Our last BCA regional, my opponent had a road map lay out after the break. I think it took something like 5 minutes for the 2 or 3 shots he took. A ref wouldn't enforce the shot clock since there weren't enough refs to stay and watch for a minute. So, when he missed, I took my sweet time on the first couple of shots, drinking beer, chalking repeatedly, looking at shots that had nothing to do with my leave, etc. I couldn't stand it after my second shot and ran the last few balls in a minute or less. He got the point and wasn't nearly as slow in his next few games.

Maybe the NBA should institute the "at your pace" idea. I'd love to watch a 5 hour game where I could take a pee/beer/food/nap break between free throws.

If it's gambling, you've got a choice to play, but for tournaments and league, hurry the #$^* up because I've got things to do.

Edit: Oh, and it sucks ass to have even a small tournament run an hour late because one person can't take a shot in less than a minute or two, making half the field wait so that everything can get moving.

I try to not let it put me in a negative mood by thinking about it. I just get a newspaper and read it so I don't have my mind on the problem. I don't use it to shark.

It works for me.
