Here we have an industry leader. Makes arguably the best tables out there, making a video on how to measure a pocket. What's the first thing he says? "I don't use a tape measure, it's too hard to use." WHAT!!!! You build tables and you think a tape measure is a hard tool to use???!!!! GIVE ME A BREAK!!! Why would anybody make a video that makes themselves look totally incompetent???? UNBELIEVABLE!!
Pool players are not idiots! Don't do stuff that makes it look like we are!
Neil said:Yes, I did. That's why I was able to comment on it! Do you have trouble reading a tape measure too??? There's nothing hard about reading a tape measure.

I watched this video and I agree with the ball method for measuring a pocket. Whenever I play on a table I am not familiar with, I will measure each corner pocket with two balls. I want to see how how each pocket compares to the others. He explained it quite clearly and I see no reason to bash him, or blame him for what's wrong with pool.Neil said:A lot of threads ask what is wrong with pool. Why can't we hit the big time? Ralph Kramden said:What he is saying is that the ball centers are actually under the edges of the cushions. When the balls are set in the pocket opening it would be easy to insert a known thickness spacer between the balls for a more accurate measurement.
I thought the statement about 40% of the ball sticking out before it could fall was interesting. Less shelf is too easy. More shelf is too hard. How many tables have you played on where the shelf in the pocket was so deep you could park a Volkswagen on it.

I am not sure about a Volkswagan, but they are deep pockets. It looks to me that only 20-25% of the ball is visible looking down the rail.

Lube them babies up with silicon and they will fit.$TAKE HOR$E said:What if the table is real tight and 2 balls wont fit between the pocket.
Neil said:Let me state this- when asking what pocket size a table is, do you expect to hear 4", 4 1/2", 5", ect.; or do you expect to hear 2 balls, 2 balls and a smidgen, a little less than 2 balls, ect.???
While at the room, you usually don't have a tape measure with you, so you just rough check with the balls to get an idea of how tight they are.
