How to pronounce Schön

Funny...

I was friends with Bob Runde's son Matt in college, we hung out quite a bit as well as spending time with his dad at home and at the factory. He pronounced it "shawn", I think he would know since it was his company... :)

Here's the problem (which I highlight nearly every time this item comes up).

I am very much a language and pronunciation person, especially coming from western New England where I am bombarded by the Boston, New York City, Upstate New York, New Haven, Rhode Island accents all of which are different.

As a global traveler, I also hear the varying accents from Minnesota vs Green Bay vs Dayton vs Chicago. All slightly different.

The issue with saying that Schön is pronounced like Shawn is that each area of the country pronounces Shawn differently from Shaaaaahn (Wisconsin) to Shone (deep Texas). Just ask Hillbilly to say Shawn Putnam, and you'll hear it.

Anyone who wonders should call Evan and hear it from him. It's not a Wisconsin "Shawn," but more like Western Mass or a Kansas City Shawn.

Freddie <~~~ even in Europe, I've heard it pronounce three different and distinct ways from shurn (Munich) to something close to Shane (Black Forest)

While we are on the subject of nit picking:

In Patrick Johnson's avatar, why does it say 'carp diem' when the fish pictured is clearly a mackerel? :p

Schön is german and means nice or beautiful. I find it strange not to pronounce it as the german word when you know its origin.

Im from deep in Tx and most people here pronounce it shawn. Please dont lump us in with hillbilly lol. :D Theres a reason his nickname is hillbilly, cause most people here dont talk like that. Think J.J when u think texas not hillibilly. Hes closer to the way most people i know sound.

I dont really think theres a wrong way to say it. But ill always say it as shawn. Ive always felt people who have to pronounce words "correctly" come across as pretentious. I see it alot with spanish being this deep in texas. If the cuemaker says it like shawn then that should be good enough.

Maybe they just added the umlaut because it looks cool. :-)

The actual correct pronunciation for Schon is "Schickelgruber." I thought everyone knew that.

I am pretty sure it is pronounced phonetically as "Shurn" or "Shern" in German.

Yeah, 'Shurn' is the closest to my untrained ears...and this is from Terry
Romine, who actually owns Schon.
I had read Faust as a kid and I couldn't believe the pronunciation of the
author's name...Goethe sounds like 'gerta'.

The roots of English are German, and you can still hear 'R' being heard
where they don't seem to belong in Britain and parts of North America,
especially New England.

Tatar sauce is usually pronounced 'Tartar'...
Khaki is often pronounced 'Karkey'...etc

There is difference between the two names....
'Schon has a pretty good hit.
Schicklgruber has a pretty bad hitler.
