How Would You Play This? 2/20/09

We're playing 9ball. I missed position horribly for the side pocket and left myself this scenario. The 8ball is covering enough of the 5ball that I cannot bank the ball in the lower right pocket and I'm not comfortable AT ALL about cutting the 5 into the upper side-pocket. I opted to play safe. Assuming you're not going to take the thin cut, how would you play safe?

Lot's of lower right on cue sending the 5 ball to the diamond next to the center hole, it will bank and go somewhere between 9 and 6 or stack on the bank or behind 9 ball ( you can miss the position by a feet it's still safe)

Cue ball after hiting the center diamond of the lower bank by having serious low and right it will end near the left bank and the lower left pocket.

Avoid: staying short on 5 ball and leave it before reaching 6 ball, hitting harder passing the 9 ball after banking,

Bad luck: 5 ball under the 9 ball and the cue ball can pass between 6 and 7 ball for a pot in the upper left.

Same as above, only bank the 5 long to leave an easy shot, or an easy hit on the 5 if opponent kicks to the long side of the 9, or to block the corner from the jump shot on the 9

I would think a player of your quality would cut the 5 in the side, Jude.

edit: am I missing something?

I could have but especially at that moment, I felt I was the underdog to make it. Even on a good day, I would not like this shot. I played safe and the only hint I'll give on what I did is that it hasn't been posted yet.

Here's a simple possibility that's often overlooked. The return hit is easy enough, but with no table-turning opportunity.

If you can stick the 5 to the rail he'll have to kick off the end rail, but it's OK either way.

I hate playing safeties that are as tough or nearly as tough as the offensive option, so for simplicity's sake I might shoot something like this.

Speed is touchy, but if you can get there, your opp. might have to resort to swerving at the 5-ball, which probably won't end well for him.

If I'm just playing for S & G's, I might go for this "ooo aah" shot:

This iz far from the best choice. 2 many things can go wrong like scratching in the corner

It's hard to judge it at times without actually seeing it in person.

Is there enough room to hit the left side of the 5 missing the 8 and go 2/3 rails behind the 9?

or do you have the correct angle to bank the 5 back straight across and back over sending the cue ball two rails behind the 9 ball?

I am side pocket retarded and would likely sell out on it too.

Well, I think you may have also forgotten to put your Wei-glasses on. On the diagram, the cut looks reasonable but in reality, it's much more challenging.

This isn't what I played but I like this shot a lot. The simplicity of it gives it high marks since you're pretty much guaranteed to leave little even if you fail to hide the cueball.

Jingle, I couldn't see the left side of the 5ball. I could hit it pretty straight or anywhere on the right side but that was just about it.

Wow I looked at this one for a long time and I still believe your best option is to hide the 5 ball in the side pocket and run out. All the safes I see give you no better chance of winning in IMO.

Well I hope I'm wrong and you teach me something when you show us what you did. I love to learn.

X2, I would have shot for the side as well.....

Jude, for a safety, I like Patricks shot with the 5 at the bottom and the cue up against the 8.....but my safety play sucks so I always go simple....

I think the proper way to play this is to cut the 5 into the side with low-right english... pulling the CB to the side rail and behind the 8. If you make it, you have a good chance to make the 6 in the bottom side. If you miss, you have a great chance to hook your opponent.

Unless I'm missing something, I can't think of why you wouldn't at least go for a 2-way shot here, given where the 5 might end up and where the 6 lays. Give yourself a chance to win in 1 inning.
