How Would You Play This? 7/7/09

So I've been playing a bit more lately and I guess my recent enthusiasm has motivated me to post a shot that came up today which I thought was very interesting. Game is 9-ball, equipment is bouncy and tight which is why I decided not to play the combination here.

It took me a moment or two to come up with a decent safety idea and I was actually a bit surprised I managed to pull it off. Assuming we're on defense, how would you play this?

aim to miss the combo to the short rail using low inside to send the cue ball to the other long rail and the inside brings it down behind the seven.

Can you diagram it? It's much easier for many of us to discuss ideas when they're visual.

I slow roll the one to the end rail, just missing the 5 with a tiny bit of top. I leave the cue ball up against the five ball.

Or you could shoot the one into the 5 ball and roll the cue ball off the right side over behind the six ball.

Looks like you could also thin the right side of the one ball and just missing the left side of the six and hide the cue ball behind the six with a super soft touch.

You know, it's really funny - there are A LOT of interesting safety opportunities here. I'll tell you two things - first, thus far, the shot I came up with hasn't been posted. The second - when faced with a safety situation like this where there are many blockers but no obvious safety, I'll often look to play safe with both the cue ball and object ball. That way, I'm guaranteed to leave him kinda bad and can hope to leave him REALLY bad.

Also, if you've already posted a shot, why stop there? Perhaps we can go through all the different possibilities the shooter has in this situation. I'm sure every poster here can come up with at least three ideas.

took me a minute to figure out cuetable LOL.. see ya in a post or two..

T execute the safety I advocate, you need to know how to use a little touch stun follow as you play a medium-firm hit on the one, as follows. You'll only get the hook some of the time, but with the right speed, you'll leave the one on the top rail for a decent result even if you miss the hook.
