How Would You Play This?

So, why isn't the 4 dead off the 9? The 4-9 tangent looks good on paper, but I have blown plenty of shots that looked good, but weren't.

I would pocket the 1 with draw for position on the 10. I think the 9 would get loose enough that playing the 10 with follow would set up a shot on the 9 to go into the pack again. That's risky though because from this position, I don't have a guarantee'd insurance ball after the 9.

-matt <--- wishes he could play more 14.1

Hi Jude,
I'd play the 1 ball with low stun and a touch of IE, trying to come back to center of the table. I'm no 14.1 expert, but I'd be surprised if I'd get a better chance to spread the balls and get the CB into a good position than that shot.

The reason for the IE v plain or OE, is that I think IE helps to open the pack, and it also helps to prevent the CB running too far up the table, allowing a harder hit, better spread with less movement of the CB.

Hard to tell from the pic, but if the 4 ball is on I would shoot the 4 ball wired combo. If not, I would check the 2 to see if it's wired. If not, look at the 9 to see if it's wired off the 4. If so roll the 10 to the bottom of the 9 for a break out angle. Or shoot the 1 with draw and a medium stroke (hard enough to push the 4 and the 6 out) and draw back towards the middle of the table. I personally wouldn't shoot the 1 with top as top has a chance to scratch. My last option would be to shoot the 10 rather hard with a little draw hoping that a few balls rub free and i can shoot the 1 or 14 next.

Play the one, break the pack.

But that's straight pool, sometimes there is no right way, it is the players way, and as long as said player runs out and leaves a good break shot, it was the right way.

I rarely play 14.1, but I think I'd go with follow, bust the pack a bit, and set up a shot into the lower right corner.

Prayers to George...

I want to play you for some cash in 14.1, because you broke the pack open
but forgot to make a ball !!! :D

PS, and left me a shot in the lower right hand corner, sweet.

Strike the 15 ball dead center and pull the cue ball back about 10 inches toward the center of the table. This drives the 6 into the corner and separates the rack nicely for the run out.

There's a good chance you might make the 4 ball as well.

Play the One Ball with 2 tips low right and a good stroke.

That's how I would play the shot and to add a little to this answer, you need to really commit to this shot and hit it hard enough, because you are going to bust the stack up, to get that CB out of the stack and into the open to give yourself another shot. Otherwise you are just going to get 1 ball and leave him with a open rack.---Smitty

I think this is one of those cases of paralysis by analysis. There are plenty of shots here that are not bad especially if you assume that the seemingly dead balls go. The important thing to do in situations like this is not to mull over which option has a slight advantage over another, but to firmly pick one option and to not screw it up. If you don't screw up what you were planning on, chances are you will be in good line to run out the rest of the rack regardless of which option you chose.
