Humidity Level???

I have a small collection of cues and i do monitor the humidity level in the display case constantly. I live in wisconsin and as the seasons change my old house changes with them. particularly in the winter with the furnace warming the air it drops the humidity to the mid 20% during the coldest months. is this safe. there is no fast swings of temp or humidity changes but what would you consider safe on the high and low end of humidity?

most of the year my case is in the low to mid 40% humidity.

I took the cues in my cases down, because of the lack of temp and humidity control.
I keep them at 70 degrees and 50-55 humidity year round. I am sure you will get a lot of information and other opinions, good luck

Wooden furniture makers say that the humidity should be around 50%. Wood will shrink and swell as it absorbs moisture from the air. Wood does not change shape in a round manner. The shape change is affected by the grain orientation and the density of the wood.

Big swings in humidity is bad for cues as it is for any other wood.

I had a new full spliced cue blank that I hung up in december. When I got around to working on it in january, it rolled with a 1/4 lump in it. I was pissed because I paid good money for it. I hung it back up and forgot about it until June. I took it down and rolled it ....... it was perfectly straight. I immediately bored and cored it full length.

Wood moves......

If you want your cues to stay the same, put them in pretty much air tight cases and only bring them out when you want to look at them or show them off.
 
IMO, a swing from 20% - 40% is pretty large, and will probably produce some movement. I store my wood and my cues in my basement which is 34% pretty much year round. I think you would want more consistent conditions.
 
I know 20% swing is substantial, im saying it doesnt happen over nite. its a gradual drop throughout the winter from Nov. to Feb. also it might sound strange but a couple cues butts that are a hair off seem to straiten up during the winter. My case is also in the basement and i just built it this year so this is new to me... i live in Nekoosa WI home of Jacoby Cues and they keep their shop at 40%. i plan on updating the furnace this year so i guess i better get one that also regulates humidity level.

Along with the humidity is temperature change a factor also. I like to store my cues in an open case I had made that is on the wall so I can view them all the time and enjoy with friends. I think I have posted a few pictures of the case. I have the windows tinted so they don't get direct sunlight and I have never checked humidity but from winter to summer I may have 20 degree swings is that a concern for warpage as well? Randy
