Hustlers Week 2: Episodes 3 & 4 Thread

What do you all think about the carom on the 9 ball that Jennifer made against Greg? Was it an obvious shot, which they previously agreed didn't have to be called. Or should she have called the 9 ball? I agree that it was obvious that the 9 ball wasn't luck, but I still feel like she should have called it. When I'm playing for money, I call every money ball whether it is obvious or not. I call almost every money ball whether I'm playing for money or not. The 8 could be sitting inside the pocket and I'd call it. It takes less than 2 seconds to point and say "corner pocket".

Duddy didn't win last game. She banks the 4 and scratches. Then she's running a few balls and 8 to win.

The scratch is ball in hand for the redhead and the banked ball don't count towards the 4 she needs. It's painfully obvious that her sets episode one and 4 are make believe. Top female player...Ok and I'm the king of England.

Emily isn't a world beater, but I've seen her go hill hill at turning stone against solid players, where she had break and runs on diamond tables in major tournament conditions. So you can't say she is a D player.

I've said before editing is everything. Yes she scratched, but the next three turns at the table could have been kicks out of safes or anything. Maybe Amy got ball in hand and used out to play safe? The editors need to keep the flow of the match so they cut right to her running out which could've been ten minutes later. So that ten minutes not being showed makes it all fake?

I enjoyed this weeks shows a little more than the first two and will continue to watch and support it in the hope it will help pool survive. Jenn should have called the nine ball but it sure fired her up when they called her on it. I'd bet there are lots of pros and top notch players that would love to be part of this show and must be chomping at the bit to even get a chance. What a great opportunity for all the folks involved!

Yes, she should have called it and she knew it. Out definitely wasn't luck because she is a professional player and played that spot correctly. Her frustration was extremely genuine and the tension was bleeding through the tv. Moments like that tell me this show is more real than some here think. You just can't stage something like that and these are real players not actors, their emotions are genuine.

It seems that TV in general has become so bad, some of us simply don't know what to expect from reality TV.

Friends, I will let you in on a little secret. They took the Love Boat and Fantasy Island off the air! Like it or not, this is the new generation of TV.

Next week, if people want to see what bad reality tv is, just tune into TruTV an hour before the hustlers and watch an episode of Hardcore Pawn. It's absolutely unwatchable. The staging is very apparent and the characters are not very genuine. Plus the production quality (cameras, editing, sound, etc) is poor.

I watched Hardcore Pawn for the first time last night, and then when the hustlers came on after...The Hustlers was like Citizen Kane in comparison.

Lol my wife loves Hardcore Pawn! I know what you mean though, I make fun of her all the time for it. Storage wars is also, equally bad!

Haha, yes indeed, storage wars is on that same level of badness. When I first heard pool reality series and TruTV, I shuddered a little thinking "storage wars". But the result has been anything but and I'm extremely satisfied.

OK NYC people what poolhalls did they visit other than Steinway in episode 3 and 4?

The match between Gary and Justin was filmed at VIP, out on Long Island.

As previously mentioned, Scotty went to practice at his home room at Castle Billiards in NJ. This is the room that hosted the SVB/Shaw epic earlier in the year.

Agreed, Kid. Even those who think its not for them..... should still want to support it. If this show motivates even ONE kid to pick up a cue, thats more than any other TV show could say. I look forward to seeing a new generation of TV inspired players. (Fresh meat for everyone! HaHa!)

I've been dating Emily for 3 years...I am a player myself and have watched her play more than anyone....shes beaten Jeremy sossi even in an open pro predator event. She's beaten Tony Robles in league at Amsterdam getting Weight..... She's beat countless shortstop players playing even or getting weight...shes beaten many of the best women on the pro tour Dawn Hopkins, Eva Lawrence, Britney Bryant, etc.....she's rated an A player in the in house league at Amsterdam Which has cream of the crop players and has a winning record.....she is no world beater as you said but is a brilliant player and has tremendous talent. Can she beat these players consistently?...no...but those are some nice notches in the belt IMO.... I dont know where people come off talking about her like they know her. Thanks for your positive input tho.

That just shows the low bar there is on Tru tv. It is a good sign for The Hustlers if they can get their act together. I don't think it would take much support for Trutv to green light a second season.

We have enough power right here to maybe do it if we started a campaign to support the show. I will be contacting who ever, to show my support for their new show.

I hope everybody who is on here will do the same. AZ billiards can be like the "Koch" brothers for The Hustlers if we try. I have made my criticisms already and now I want to support it how ever I can and lets see where it can go.

I admit, I used to think Emily couldn't play and appeared from photographs to have attitude...But after seeing her play some I think she can play much better then what I first thought...I also changed my mind about her attitude..I like her personality..
She seems very sweet and honest..
I had her judged different and I was wrong..Glad I got to see this side of her....I'm now an Emily fan...

No problem, Big B. I always give credit when credit is due. I covered a turning stone classic last summer for an article in Cue Times billiard news. Emily had improved leaps and bounds from when I watched her play two years prior. When I interviewed her, she had told me about her coach and all the hours of practice she had invested into her game-and it showed for sure. Also her energy and optimism in regards to the sport was exceptional, and I was sure to mention that in the article.

And yes, anyone here would kill to have such prestigious notches on their belts as Emily does. She should be very proud and only getting better with time.

This show is great for the sport and I'm very glad Emily is part of it. Tell her job well done.

Well i can say this..

Because of this show there is one more person actually interested in playing pool...

My friend called me up to ask if i wanted to go shoot some pool with him. He told me he seen the show on Trutv and has always kinda been interested in playing. I met him at the pool hall and we shot for a while and he is even thinking about getting a cue.

My wife, who has not shot ONE shot on our table in the 15 years we've had it, loves this show. She said, "It makes me want to go out and shoot pool."

What other pool thingy has had, even close to, this power?

If I were a pool hall owner, I'd be jumping up and down with excitement and anticipation.

OK, I confess...I'm watching

recording it on the dvr and catching up when I can.

Have to give it credit for the production quality which is as good as any of the "reality shows" out there.

I just have a sense that the staging will become too apparent after a time (thinking of Pawn Stars from Las Vegas) which will make it too hard to believe. I can go along with a certain amount of artistic license but when it stretches the imagination too far I'll be gone....but I'll hang in as long as it's more about pool and less about the personalities.

Thanks for that info.

I was also wondering why her game was being dissed so much here. On eps 1, it was obvious she had game with good fundamentals.

EDIT: Jen's stroke was beautiful in this week's match.

I watched for the first time last night. Apparently they replay the shows for late night viewers as I saw them starting at 1am. I have Direct TV satellite and TruTV is ch 246. I enjoyed the shows and a look at another part of the country and how things work there.

That's like watching Star Wars and thinking that's how the astronauts live.
