Hybrid Wrap

Thinking about working on one of these, taking it from rubber to leather. I remember seeing a thread about why not to do this? Any advice or anyone know where the thread is? I did a search but cant seem to locate it under hybrid wrap.

You saw a thread about why not to do one of these yet you're thinking about doing one.
OK, we'll go with that.

The wrap groove is .040/.045" deep and your leather is approx. .022" thick.
I'm of the opinion that these wraps are not meant to be changed.
Don't like the rubber, get a different cue.

Mezz hybrid? If so, it can be done. I just seen one in VF. Guy bought the cue from Mezz booth, took it down stairs to Lomax & had leather put on to replace that weird wrap they come with. Turned out great.

That may be true for the Mezz but my first thought was that he was speaking of a Lucasi Hybrid.
I don't know, does Mezz offer a rubber wrap?

Yeah. I told the guy I had read where a cuemaker wrote a thread saying it wasnt a good idea, but a guy pressed me to look into it so I said I would. Now I have. Thanks.

Thanks for the help. It was a Lucasi and I am gonna pass. Sounds like one of those more work than it should be type repairs.

Aren't those 2MM thick ?

They very well could be as they sit well above the finish of the cue.

I currently have one in the shop that I'm re-doing.
The first time I did it (in linen), I dbl wrapped it and for whatever reason the glue let loose. I'm considering that there is something on the wood that compromised adhesion.
I've now washed the wood with xylene and sealed it.
This time I'll first wrap the groove with .020" veneer to get my build.
Thanx Mike, great idea.

William,
Don't turn-down the work if you think you can do it. Just charge accordingly.
If you're ever going to do them there has to be a first one.
Just think it all the way thru from start to finish before you even open the
door to your shop.
On the cue I'm doing, I tried one way that didn't work. Now I'm going to try another method that I feel more confident with, given the suspected adhesion issue I had. If this doesn't work, I'll keep looking until I find the one that does.
I've got a lot of toys in my bag of tricks, epoxy, multiple layers of CA or auto-clear, staples, welding, the list goes on.
Stick around, I'll know in the next day or two if the veneer method works.

Oh gotcha. Mezz has a break cue with a funky rubber wrap. Dunno what it's called, thought it was hybrid but that's one of their shafts. I got confused.

KJ,
You might consider a Tiger stacked wrap. I just checked one of the one's I have in stock and it's between 1,25-1,3mm thick. This is the black stained one, the natural seems to be a little thinner-1,15mm.
In this case you don't have much to work on so you need to be very accurate while installing it since it's not possible to press it that much and sand.
In worst case, install-press-sand and add another stacked or normal wrap on top - charge accordingly of course

I just did a Mezz break cue and we trashed the rubber and went with Irish Linen. The wrap groove isn't as deep as the Lucasi super groove. Just my .02 cents. -Jon

The Mezz cue with rubber is the Power Break cue.
It has a rubber grip which is changeable. Personally I like
the feeling this gives, it's like glued in your hand.
The only problem is that is loose (so it could be changed)
and could roll up when you put it in your case.
Changig grip on this cue should be straight forward.

The Power Break Pro has a funkier wrap which is thicker so I can see
a similar problem as Lucasi. I'll get the Pro model soon in stock
and give a update.
