given the stupidity on the main forum regarding Shane Van Boening. His cue has a very long pro taper, almost all the way to the joint. Evidently Earl uses a similar taper on his shaft.

Does it increase the chance of the shaft warping to put such a long pro taper on it?

Yes, it does make warping almost a certainty.
 
I played with Earl's cue a few years ago now, and the thing was like a willow switch. It's been a while as I said, but the tip had to be about 12mm if I recall correctly.
