I cheated to win my match

I'll be there

Thats great man!

Didnt realize where you were from when I posted. I may be at the brickyard at the end of the month. If so, Id like to say hi. Always nice to put faces to the names.

I always play in Mac's tournies. I made it to almost every one he ran in Ft. Wayne. First time I met Mac Ashby, was at a tourney he ran at Bud's Lounge in Indy, around 1982 I think. That was the first time I met Peru Paul, and warmed up with him. Willie Munson, Buddy Hall, Gary Nolan, Nick Varner, Louis Roberts, and a whole slew of other pro players used to show upi for that thing. Had it twice a year. The Brickyard tourney will be even better than the one in the spring time was. Be sure to look me up.

This thread reminds me why I don't play league. About 8 years ago in the league Semi-Final my opponent miscues on the break skimming the rack and send the cue ball 4 rails and it tucks it's self in the middle of the table basically surrounded in a ugly cluster. I simply want to thin off a adjoining ball and let her have at it hoping she'll clean up some of the trash. No matter how I address the ball I can't bridge to get at it. I thus stack two bridges (I'm an old snooker guy so this is natural to me) and proceed to make a clean hit and rail. She screams foul. I do mean scream. Dogs in the 10 miles away could hear her. I ask her why. She proceeds to tell me that using two bridges is illegal. I inform her that it's done quite often and she then calls over the league operator. Now based on the table and her abilities I could have given her six "ball in hands" and she would not have gotten through half the rack...but what the hell. The operator knew less than her and proceeded to poll the room. I protested and said that's not how life works.

28 years of playing has taught me one thing. 95% of the people know 60% of the rules. The likelihood of being called on a phantom foul is inversely proportionate to the players ability.

Oh as a side note is the one on the left and the second from the right wearing bottoms (check photo) or are they just that big (ugh)!

Big Shoes

SmorgassBored and I once joked that if all you have to have is one foot on the floor, then what's wrong with putting on a pair of those CLOWN SHOES that are like, 3 feet long and you could climb up on the table and your toes could still reach down and touch the floor even if your body was laying up on the table.

I always dreamed about getting a pair of those and having them next to my seat, waiting for the right moment to use them. I could only imagine my opponent's surprise when I slip them on and jump up on the table and fire in a ball quickly without giving them a chance to complain.

I may make me an extension to slip over my shoe this week, and mount an extra shoe on it, and climb right on the table. That would be hilarious. Bring my video camera in. I'm sure she'd try to hit me with a foul on that one. Then give her the printout of the rules. LOL..........

id just be as diplomatic as possible. I wouldnt even say to her that she is wrong or that she should not take things so seriously. All those statements put her on the defensive and can be viewed as insults in themselves. Just say that you have always respected her ability, it bothered you that there was a disagreement and got you thinking about the rule so you looked it up and brought in a copy of the rule in case the question arose. If you have it in your hand she would know right then she was wrong. You dont even have to show it to her unless she asks.

If you push the rule on her and tell her she is wrong, or that she need to take things less seriously, she will know she was in wrong but still think negatively of you. Why create a fan club in this manner?

This is the part I don't miss about playing any more, Sam. You have more class than I would have sir.

I am gonna give them to her next week, and suggest that if she's wants to be a nit picker on rules, maybe she should go to law school and give up pool.

Bad idea, there are already too many idiot lawyers. Just take look at Washington D C.

Actually, she THINKS I cheated. I was playing in a tourney last night. It's a free entry deal. The bar adds $5 per person to the pot. We usually have about 20 to 30 players. There's a lady who comes almost every week with her boyfriend, and I have known her for a long time. We have never really been close friends, but speak to each other.

It's a race to 1 in the winners side, and on the loser's side, it's a race to your handicap. She's a 1 and I have to go to 3. First rack, I let her shoot about 3 or 4 times because of the way the balls were laying. She plays pretty good, but I figure she can't finish the rack. I won.

2nd game, I break and run out a pretty tough rack, and while I am dropping the quarters in, she says, "nice run, even if you did foul." I thought she was kidding with me, and said, "I do that once in a while." She gave me this look, so I asked which foul she was talking about. She say's I have to keep at least 1 foot FLAT on the floor. I told her I had a foot on the floor, referring to a shot where I had to sit on the edge of the table, half way thru the rack. She says, NO, you didn't. It says in the rule book, "you have to keep 1 foot FLAT on the floor".

I ran out the next rack on her, and sent her home. The more I thought about it, the more I felt like she was calling me a cheater. So, first thing this morning, I printed out the rules fromVNEA, BCA, and the World Standardized, concerning having 1 foot TOUCHING the floor. I am gonna give them to her next week, and suggest that if she's wants to be a nit picker on rules, maybe she should go to law school and give up pool.

The least you can do, if you're gonna quote rules, and suggest someone is violating them, is LEARN them. Then find a new hobby that you can enjoy, preferably by yourself.

Tap Tap Tap. That should put her in her place. It's annoying when no matter what you do right you must have cheated to win. Some people can't accept the fact that they lost fair and square so they make up excuses for every and anything. I would not be surprised if she said those were not the updated rules for this year.

Isn't putting her "in her place" just as petty as what she did? Walking in and throwing a rulebook in her face just underlines the fact that you let something this stupid bother you all week.

Not a strong move, in my opinion.

He never said he would throw the rulebook in her face. Why the hyperbole? It's probably a good idea to gently inform her of the correct rules so she (hopefully) won't continue to "enforce" the wrong rule with others.

I also find that the less someone knows the rules, the louder and more confident they are in enforcing their "interpretation".

Regarding the 3 feet clown shoes idea, for the time being the rules probably allow for it and I even fully support it, provided...

1) Player cannot changes shoes mid-match (must wear 3 feet clown shoes for every shot)

2) Photographs and/or video are permitted

:grin-square:

I would probably handle it a little in a little different way. If this is a place you hang out in, and you have said you have always been on speaking terms with her, there is no need to really make an enemy.

I would probably tell her that when she first said what she said you thought she was joking and thats why you replied as you did. Then after you got home you thought about what she said and figured she just misunderstood the rule, and to keep her from making the same mistake printed out the rules so she would have a better understanding.

If she is still crappy about it after that, then handle it as you wish. But at least you handled it like an adult instead of just heading out to make an enemy.

Thats just me. Yes, she was in the wrong, but how you handle it could effect how others see you.

JMHO

Good reply Woody,

I don't intend to throw a rule book in her face

I do want to make sure she realizes her mistake. I've wondered if it was one of the lesser players in the room, if she may have decided to call that on them. It's a free entry fee tourney, and she don't have any business quoting the rule book to anyone. I'm all for people having a right to call a foul, but nitpicking at little tourney like that is a bit rediculous

One foot "Flat" on floor?

She says, NO, you didn't. It says in the rule book, "you have to keep 1 foot FLAT on the floor".

Sooooooooooooooooo.... What did the rule book say about keeping one foot "Flat" on the floor as opposed to any part of the foot? Depending upon the shot lay-out, the difference between ensuring you take the shot with one foot "flat" on the floor , versus, just your toe touching, could easily bring about a different outcome, visa-vie decreasing the level of difficulty.
