I feel terrible for what I did.

I was in a sport bar practicing tonight and two of my teammates were there too.
So one of my teammates just bought a cue from the other and we were checking it out together.

He pulls it out of the case still wrapped in the plastic, unwraps it, hands it to me and says 'check it out' I ask him 'are you sure, it's never even been chalked'
he insisted so I started hitting balls with it.

So he walks into the other room and while he is gone I get off balance a bit and bump the butt into the metal part of the Valley pocket and ding the hell out of it. Like a deep finish ding almost to the wood.

So he comes back and puts the cue in the case without noticing the ding. So I sit there feeling terrible for awhile and finally man up and tell him what happened.

He was trying hard to be nice about it but he is visibly upset.

I offered to pay the local cue guy to touch it up, I didn't know what else to do.

Things happen in life that you cannot control. I think that it is admirable that you admitted your fault and offered a solution. You could have easily said nothing and let him think that he accidentally dinged his cue. The world needs more honest people like you.

Humans. We are apes. The particularly evolved kind, but still apes. Don't beat yourself up for making the mistake. It happens. The only issue is that it took you a moment to tell him. You should have told him right away, but it's obvious that you were in a very awkward and embarrassing position. Offering to pay is righting a wrong given the circumstances.

Why do you feel SO bad. You did not do anything bad on purpose. It was an accident & you manned up & told the truth.

I understand that you feel bad for your friend & because it was your fault, but it was an accident.

Next time you see him or call him up & tell him how bad you feel & maybe offer to buy the cue off of him so he can get a new undinged one.

Just do the best you can, but don't bury yourself, it was an accident.

He should forgive you & YOU should forgive YOU.

Best Wishes

A guy asked to see my Josey when he noticed my case and said he played quite a bit.

I was a bit reluctant to let him see it as I'd never seen the guy before but let him see it.

He starts looking at it etc and after a while starts talking about the balance point. Tries to balance the butt on his finger and before I could say anything it starts falling. He raised his hand to try and catch it/switch his hand from facing downward to upward.

Cue goes flying in the air. Butt hits the side of a low sitting chairs cushion and the very edge of the butt hits the ground.

No damage or dent or ding even. But scared the shit out of both of us.

I've never seen someone so apologetic before.

Shit happens.

It happens man, it's great that you are offering to pay repairs. As long as you're good friends you should be fine, trust me.

I was in a bar once, there's a shock, and a guy handed a friend of mine a Palmer to check out, he raised it up to read the original by Palmer inside the window, and stuck the shaft in a ceiling fan, lol. There were shaft parts flying everywhere. At least you didn't do that. Your friend should thank you, you just took the pressure off of him, putting the first ding in it.:grin-square:

Man, as I read these post, I am thinking you guys are way to nice. I know accidents happen and you didn't mean to slip or drop the cue. But in my opinion you just bought a cue or if it can be fixed to just like new, then pay to have it fixed.--Smitty

I have to explain this to my daughter all the time. One is not excused because it is an accident. One should in fact feel badly, feel guilt or shame, if one is functioning correctly.

It's honorable and the right thing to do by offering to pay for the repair.

I bought a OB pro class shaft. Brand new.. someone wants to try it out. Hands it back a few minutes later. Does not say anything but there is a substantial nick. I do not say anything to him. I send it back for repair. I pay cost plus shipping. That's it. Nobody touches my cues. I do not handle anyone's cues. Let them be offended if I'm reluctant to hand it over to them.
Years ago someone starts to hand me their camera and says Feel how light it is. I say thanks no thanks.

Don't feel too bad.
A friend had a bad day yesterday...
He cracked the butt cap on a high end Tim Scruggs cue and cracked his new $1300 bong  all in the same afternoon, tough day.
No shit!

I never let anyone play with my cue.

Long ago I once did. The guy was one of those old school pool room habitués with all kinds of jewelry on. When I got my cue back the shaft had several nicks in it from his rings. Flash forward several years and I'm at the player's meeting at the US 1Pocket Open when it was being held at the Playground in Kalamazoo. Ed, the tournament director, is trying to explain a point about push shots and sees me standing in the front row with my Gina and says, "Lou, let me borrow your cue for a second." And I just silently move m head back and forth and all the players just laughed. They understood.

I understand. If anybody asks me if I want to see or shoot with their cue I politely decline and say, I don't want to ding it just for that reason. I let a guy on my 9-ball team try out my older Joss with the ss360 shaft. I almost felt bad, he didn't want to decline, but he also didn't want it to touch anything. He was so careful lol.

I just recently put a pin side ding in my newer Joss on the butt and I got so pissed off, I couldn't play.

Shit happens as previously pointed out.

At least it wasn't like the previous post about the Palmer

 $1300 bong !!!!! WTH is he smoking out of,LOL.

I'm not sure which would be worse either..........;)

Man, you should feel bad and stupid and you need to make it right. You should never play with another guys brand new cue even if he is nice enough to offer. And you should never ride another mans bike, car or wife for that matter.

How much is the value of the cue?

Is it a production cue?

1.) If it's a lower priced unit or a production cue just buy him a new one and keep the one you dinged.

2.) If it's a higher priced production cue you could get a local repair man de-ding it.

3.) If it's a custom you should send it back to the cue builder to be repaired.

It was an Illadelph, with a built-in nitrogen tube.
At least the Scruggs can be fixed, but guess who has to go public to figure out who to send it to.
You guess it, me, and I was out of the room when both incidents happened.
He's taking care of the bong, I'm taking care of the butt cap replacement and subsequent refinish, and hopefully the bong and the Scruggs will still hit good when we are done.

Other then having it fixed (what you offered) only other thing you can do is buy him a new cue.

You did the right thing.

It's a cue not a child, don't fret. Have some one touch it up and call it good! My really nice cue has so many battle scars it's scary! I'll have Keith refinish it one of these days...

I always joke that I don't know how to play with a straight cue, with no dings!

best,

Justin
