I had a vision today of many pool rooms, and bars closing soon

Stopped to buy Gas, that was $2.87.9/Gal. last week, and it is now $3.05.9./Gal. News media is saying gas will go to $4.00/Gal by summer.

Guess I will be staying home this weekend, and not making the planned trip to Tempe Sunday for a tournament.

I will point the blame finger at the environmentalists who will not allow, have blocked exploration for oil in the U.S., and have not allowed needed new refineries to be built in the U.S.

Have you done the math?

Gas has went up about four dollars a tank. I hate it too but in the real world my expenses have went up about one cent a mile. That means it costs me almost a dollar a day extra to drive back and forth to my shop, an extra twenty or twenty-five dollars a month.

If the rise in the cost of gas is really the deal breaker for you, you had no business going to a tournament anyway unless you were a sure bet to cash. If you are a sure bet to cash the gas increase is all the more reason to go.

The sky may be falling but it hasn't yet! :D

Gas in San Diego is $3.39 for the CHEAPEST gas and if you pay cash. If you use credit it's $3.59 and $3.89 for the good stuff. Gas prices suck!

I don't think anyone is stopping the oil companies from building new refineries. It's economics. Right now an expansion at Motiva (used to be a Texaco refinery) in Port Arthur, TX, will make it the largest refinery in the country, and provide a lot of new jobs for about a three year period.

Try owning a boat that gets a mile to the gallon, and gas on the water is over four bucks, but what are you gonna do?

I do not think that this will have much effect on pool rooms unless they are located in remote area's, that people must drive to. It has been a fact of history over the last hundred years that when the economy go's in the toilet well located pool rooms only increase there normal business. Now while this is a sad fact, it also is very true.

When looking at pool rooms from the perspective of an owner, location is the most important factor in the planning process.

Good Day Bruce!!!!

I know of 10+ pool halls up for sale and more coming up for sale to some good ones and junk ones..

I'm glad I sold my to boats I miss my compact car and have a full size truck with a kick ass system but is going throught the roof $3.50 + in Sacramento I need the orange crush just to get gas money if not i'm staying home...

Bruce, was it a Miss Cleo -esque vision

Jake ( by the whisker of saggitarius methinks gas be goin up )

gas is about $10/gal in Germany,

the economy is hammering my business, i have layed off over 200 people and more to come soon, my collection rate is down sharply the past 4 months,

in a office building I own a collection company occupies the whole thing and I sopke to him the other day and he is down over 50% in his business, they contact the person in debt for medical stuff etc and they simpally cant pay, he has been in the iz for 14 years and never saw it this bad.

its brutal everwhere and the worst is yet to come

I don't think economy is bad for pool. The greatest glory days of the game were in & immediately after the depression. It's what poor people do when their power is shut off & nothing else to do. Gambling would spike due to easy money if you are good enough, money that is unavailable otherwise.

I won't say that pool rooms are recession proof but during times of economic whoes, pool rooms and bars do better than most leisure based businesses. History has proved this.

What you find in going out of town tournaments is people car pooling more and sharing hotel rooms to split the costs.

At one time, myself and 5-6 others guys would grab our sleeping bags and cots, pile into one vehicle and get one room near the tourney site. The entire weekend would cost about $25 excluding the entry fee.

If the recession hits hard, I can see the headlines now: POOL ROOM BURNS TO THE GROUND, 500 MEN LEFT HOMELESS! LOL

yea, prices are up!....I paid $3.75/gal for diesel today. Looking at recipts from last year thats up exactly $1 a gallon. I own a plumbing biz which is basically economy proof, so I'm not bichin, but I really do drive a lot! I fill up every 3 days.....dual 16gal tanks :o you do the math!

My granny used to tell me during the depression one of the only trades unhurt was plumbers.....I can see that makes sense to me now, but I still might trade in the GIANT utility dually diesel beast I drive every day!?

I'm gonna just start bumming free rides off people and I might not buy live TAR feeds either! ;)

...

(oh okay, it was a joke - maybe a bad one, but a joke either way)

I work right down the road from the Motiva and Valero refineries in Port Arthur. The oil companies are doing very well right now. There really is no recession in Southeast Texas right now. Places like Valero and Motiva have had to delay their expansions due to the fact they don't have enough workers.

BTW, gas aint much cheaper in oil country. I paid $3.09 in Port Arthur yesterday. You would think gas would be cheaper here since its made right here.

I have heard from several pool room owners that the smoking ban has cost them each up to $25,000.00 a month. Thats the one I don't understand because I have never thought that smoking and going out to play pool were related, but apparently it has something to do with how long people stay out, how much they drink, and where they go.

I don't believe it either. The only owners I could see who are getting hurt by this are room owners who live near bordering states who do not have a ban. Smoking bans are in effect throughout most of the country and people aren't going to stay home just becasue they can't smoke inside a bar.

Well I am glade one refinery is going on line. I normally have to drive 30 minute to play in any tournament. My choise is Kolby?s in Tempe, and that is 45-50 minute drive each way.
