I love my ob1

one on it's way

well with all this great press i thought i would give one a try. but i have a couple of quick questions...the shaft comes tapered at 12.75....what are you thoughts about taking it down to 12.50? then tips...to complete the shaft do you put a moori med or go with the sniper tip?

thank you advance

All I did to change mine was stick a Sniper tip on it. I like the stock taper, feel, deflection, - pretty much everything. I'm just a hard-core sniper fanatic. Seriously though, the talisman that comes on it is a good tip. You might be satisfied with it just the way it is. That's kinda the reason why I entitled the thread "I love my ob-1." It's like a real good woman. You can love her just the way she is. ;) And I haven't found one I like better, yet. (Why do I hear bells ringing?)

I'll give you five guesses, but you only need one.

-yow!

(And actually, for the filming of the ESPN show "3 Cushion Grandmaster" I had brand new shafts with brass ferrules that Dieckman is starting to work with for me, and those two new shafts did NOT have Snipers at the time. But, the tips they had were good enough for the time being. I am pretty sure one was a moori medium, and the other wasn't a layered, perhaps a triangle. But, I'll be retipping those as soon as is convenient for me. And yes, Snipers will go on them. I've just had so much success with them. When I was in NY, I had Miguel put a Moori on one of my shafts that was waiting for a sniper. A few dozen masse shots and it was mushroomed. Not bad, but mushroomed. And in Vegas, filming for ESPN, prior to filming I had to trim the edges off of the moori that had mushroomed on a brass ferrule. I'm not dissin the moori, i just love the sniper.) [climbing off my soapbox now, lol]

and...

nothing special done to them,
right out of the box tips huh?

there was a post about generating more spin with a soft or a hard tip.
someone asked what gets used on masse cues or trick shot cues...
whatever they said...

and more for me,
why brass ferrules?

I recently took mine down to 12.125 at the tip of the ferrule with a gradual (conical) taper. I also use a sniper. The combo works very well for me now. I thought I liked the diameter when I got it, but now it is MUCH better.

You can get it in 12.75 or all the way down to 12.2

I know because Royce originally told me he would give me 12.5, and I was cool with that until they told me they could get me down to 12.2

So you can get it ordered already at 12.5, and you can have them put whatever tip you feel comfortable with on it.

I just played with my spare OB1 shaft. I thought about starting a new thread called "I love my spare OB1". ;) And, I actually liked the talisman tip, but I wasn't getting quite as much spin as with the sniper. Likely because I am a trick shot artist, I tend to use a lot of spin, and rarely hit near-center ball. (And perhaps that's why I tend to like 3c, b/c of the oft-required extreme spin.) So, the OB1 with a Sniper makes a great combination, since it meets my requirements. :D

A while back I practiced some of the 3c stroke shots with the OB1, but it was before I was ready to switch completely over to it. I had reservations about putting down the cue I had been using and try to re-learn my espn shots with the new shaft. But, now that I'm in love with the OB-1, I was rockin out some nasty stroke shots on the 3c table. Granted, I still can't run more than 3 points, but when I set up one of Semih's shots, the OB-1 will just plain perform.

What's funny is that the one shot that I didn't make on the espn show "3 Cushion Grandmaster", the airborne shot (aka George Rippe rides the rail), I made on my first try in front of a few onlookers. So, despite what I had previously said about not jumping well with the shaft, I rocked that one out like it was nothing.

For you OB-1 guys, are you doing anything in particular to keep your shaft smooth?

Royce told me that he doesn't recommend wiping it with a microfiber cloth because it might snag. I believe he recommends just wiping with a damp cloth. I also use Q-wiz.

Well I have a Q-wiz, and I dislike it. I have since purchased the Q-Care set which includes the Q-Clean, Q-Smooth, Q-Slick and Q-Glide, and I absolutely love all four of those products. Anyone know if these are safe to use on my new OB-1? Yow, whatcha got for me? Throw me some knowledge son.

Truth be told, I let my tip guy do all my cleaning. He uses that magic eraser stuff on all my other sticks but I haven't had him work on my OB1 yet. I'll see if I can get the down low from OB tomorrow about whether or not it's cool to use it on their shaft. And now that you mention it, my ferrule is all kinds-a nasty with chalk.

For years I never worried about whether sticks were clean and my ferrules were always nasty. But, since I started performing and competing I had to jump on the spotless bandwagon. ;)

Marksman, let us know what you think about the shaft once you've hit with it for a month. (Give yourself time to get used to it.) I know you're going to love it.

Oh, and on another note, I shot some practical masse shots today with it and was very impressed with it. (Of course.) But, I wouldn't try and rock out some of my big ones - I'll stick to my Dieckman for those.

Thanks Eric. I'll let you know how things are going with my OB-1 in a few weeks. I am not going to be able to make it to the pool hall tonight, but a buddy and I are going to shoot around tomorrow and I'm super excited about it. I am not a masse type of guy, but as I've mentioned in other threads, I do sometimes like to full-cue jump because I can get more english with my playing cue tip than my superhard jump tip, so it's really good to hear that you were laying waste to some masse shots with your OB-1.

As for shaft and ferrule cleanliness, I am somewhat of a neat freak. I like to keep my stick clean because I feel that the cleaner it is, the better it feels and looks, and that attitude transfers somewhat into my mindset. So, for now, I'll let the chalk stay on the shaft, but as soon as I find out what products are A-okay to use, I am going to get back to my neat-freak ways :)

I went to a Fast Eddies tournament in January 2006 and ordered an OB-1 shaft with matching dashed ring for a Paul Mottey cue. I ordered this directly from Royce. Before I received the first one, I ordered a second one via email to Royce and Royce confirmed the order in an email for the second shaft. I did receive the first OB-1 shaft and am happy with it. It has been over a year now since the email that ordered the second OB-1 shaft and still no second OB-1. I have emailed Royce since then and he emailed back, but still not second shaft. Royce did confirm he intended to fill the order and thought he had the shaft. I am a little at a loss on what to do.

Edited 15-June-2007: Got my shaft today, and other than the rings not matching - I am happy and am keeping it.

Has the second shaft been paid for? Rather than email Royce, call him directly and I'm sure you can resolve the issue quickly enough.

I got the answer straight from the horse's mouth - "treat the OB1 like you would any other shaft." (With respect to cleaning it.)

(Note: I got the answer from Amanda "The Natural" Lampert, an OB-1 sponsored player and employee of OBcues. And by no means am I implying that she is a farm animal by virtue of my first statement above.) ;)

The second shaft has not been paid for.
I have been waiting for him to finish it and contact me for payment and shipping details - just like the first one.

I would feel alot worse if it had been paid for.

I purchased an OB-1 shaft last night on-line at their site..

Anyone know how long it should take before I receive it?

OB-1 owes a lot of credit to AZbilliards for A LOT of their sales I imagine. I wouldn't have ever bought one if I haven't read all the positive reviews on this site. This has to be the best advertising for any billiard product.

Thanks Eric! Good to know!

Now, I just finished playing with my new OB-1 for the first time and all I can say is that I am now aboard the "I Love My OB-1" bandwagon. The VERY FIRST rack I played with it, I ran out. The second rack I played with it, I ran out. The feel is unparalleled. I cannot say enough about how much I love the feel of this shaft, and it's still my first time using it! I cannot wait until I've got the feel for it even more. I already find myself pocketing better with english, and my english is more precise than ever before. Thanks to all who posted positive things about the OB-1, because it was all of those threads that convinced me to buy one.
