I Miss Two Day Tournaments

There was a Buffet, the last time I visited the DCC, but I thought the food was horrible. I remember a very nice steak house being there though. Probably very pricey.

If memory serves: there is the steak house, and then a shopping mall food court kind of set up with a country kitchen, a Mexican joint, a pizza joint, and an Asian joint.

I never saw the Mexican or pizza joints open. I went up to the Asian to get a couple of eggs rolls and was told, oh so sorry we’re out, we didn’t make enough.

Blessedly I was able to get into the steak joint and sit at the bar both nights I was there. Good salads, steaks, scallops. The duck was way over seasoned — so much spice you couldn’t taste the duck. Figure $100-$150 a person.

This year I am just going on Friday Saturday and Sunday of each week.

I have gone to EVERY DCC.

Some advancement, with the player boards and the scoring screens at each table.

I had something that just about broke my heart last Saturday. A father had brought his young son, (maybe 10 - 12) to come and see the pro's and hero's. Of course they were turned away. This site and others constantly bitch about the lack of new young players and then we have probably the largest US tournament and the youngsters cant watch.

To me this is probably the biggest bummer of the whole event.

Having just come back from the DCC (3rd Round), did not buy back in because I decided to "Cash" by skipping the Buy Back, and buying another hotel night mit food/drink -- the drink being a major expense, lol -- it made me long for the days of a two-day, double elimination event.

I am no Spring Chicken and the DCC is a slog for me with endless hours of waiting around to play another round. The younger guys looked happy as pigs in... well, you know.

How's that Vigus treating you?

Not much you can do about state laws. Once they moved the casino on-shore that's how its been. Bad deal but you'd think they would have checked in advance if the kid could get in.

I'm talking about amateur 650 and under fargo not semi - pro tournament
This IS that tournament. I played in it, as did several of my buddies, 3 of whom cashed. It was 650 and under, called the "Semi-Pro" event, aka as the "Amateur" event.

Edit, here is the full bracket. 192 players. Pat Fleming's tournament. 650 and under only.

My point is if we want to keep young players it would be great to move to a location where youngsters could come. I know the DCC is making a ton from the hotel, the casino, percentages from the resturants and others paths. Its just a shame.

The DCC is never moving, unless that current hotel burns down. Mgmt never changes "anything" whether its their table cushions or their tournament format/venue/etc.

The only time they ever change anything is when their hand is finally forced to.

TBH just how many junior age players/spectators do you think aren't going? I don't think moving would change those #'s much. From what i've been told the money that D'mond gets from hotel is used to run/fund the event. I don't think they're pocketing much off this event. No clue what actual #'s are but i just don't think they're 'making a ton' off the deal.

And yet it keeps filling up every year. Your DDS(DiamondDerangementSyndrome) really needs to be treated.
That’s because they don’t have a business problem. They sell as many tables as they can make (even in the red label days), and fill the tournament each year. It’s only when the pocket book hurts they might change something.

It’s unfortunate, but it is what it is.

Sounds pretty freaking strong for a C Player.
Ahhh, well. That whole "short bus", and "mediocre player" thing came from some back and forth with oldtimer Smorgass Bored, who is no longer with us. I latched on to his smack talking, and ran with it.

At my best.. I was prolly ~640-650 Fargorate when really practicing.. I think that is a fair estimate, based on my DCC matches, and some side action there. But unfortunately.. I was practicing on a VERY short playing Red label Diamond when back in the states. That cost me a win over John Morra in the One Pocket at DCC in 2012, the very first match of the One Pocket after he won the Banks the night before. I had him down 2-1 (with SVB watching MY match on the sidelines!!!!), and simply could not finish him off with multiple attempts at cross corners, because my Red Label at home banked a full diamond short banking from the middle pocket to the corner... The table also played extremely springy, and really jacked with my speed control and position routes.. I simply didn't play enough hours on other tables to be able to compensate... I actually felt like I let SVB down, because he was surely hoping I handed Morra a loss in the first round of the One Pocket, when he and Morra were very close in the all around points.

I had a run around late 2015 when I placed top three in every regional event I played in CO/WY for about 6 months, and actually won one... I haven't beaten a pro yet.. But I have come close. Not too bad, considering the relative lack of time I put into the game.

I have a perfect Blue Label Diamond now in Germany, but am getting older, and having some shoulder soreness from time to time. I am trying to take the "long view" now, and need to treat it as a process I am going to need to dedicate significant time to, in order to achieve results. I need to start getting my cardio back in shape, and do some weightlifting to strengthen my back and shoulders.. I have been pretty consistent about practicing in the mornings now, even though it is miserably cold, and very high humidity where I am, so the 860 cloth I have on my table soaks up moisture, and plays slow, having a negative effect on my stroke. I am replacing the cloth with 860HR this week. I have always found it easier to move from a fast table to a slower table, than the reverse.

I am sitting at about 550 Fargorate currently, which is frankly, a little embarrassing. That does not include my great run in CO/WY, as those tournaments did not report to Fargorate. No matter how good I play in a few matches against tough competition at DCC, the result has been 1-0, so that has a slight downward pressure on my rating. I have been out of stroke the few tournaments I played in Germany that did report to Fargorate, so that does not help. Working as a military contractor in Germany has been very good for my wallet, helping my wife and I recover from the housing crash, but most of that time has been on night shift, and has not been great for my game. But.. I have committed to practicing a minimum of an hour a day immediately after getting home in the mornings, and a few hours a day on the weekends. It will take some time to get things back in order.

Well, I never agreed with Nick about the (Blue Label) tables.. They play perfect. But there is a LOT to be desired in pretty everything else about the way DCC is run. Diamond makes a lot of money, and spending a few thousand dollars to pay a competent coder to get their tournament software in a better state would be much appreciated.

A few more years of weak action though.. And I think we might see attendance numbers for the "dead money" start to wane at DCC.

Well.. I practiced Banks with Fedor at DCC when has 17 I think, before the rules changed.... So.. There ARE some teens that would love to come over and shoot people full of holes (Felix Vogel from Germany is a great example..). And some of those teens are VERY good, and might inspire other teens to take up the game.

The point being.. The pool population is aging in America, and we HAVE to find a way to encourage every young person we can to dedicate themselves to the game, unless you want SVB to be our last major star once he retires. Having the biggest tournament event in the U.S. completely locking out minors is just shooting American pool in the foot, IMHO...
