I'm thinking that with new year's resolutions coming up, I of course have my personal goals and I would love to have someone hold me to them. I know/recognize the value of speaking goals out loud and the accountability that goes with and drives them. I would love it if I could have someone "check" on me. Any suggestions as to where to find someone reliable and understanding?

If your a hot chick I dont think finding someone to hold you to your new year resolutions is going to be a problem, if your a 40 year old dude....good luck.

So it sounds like you are not looking for an instructor but rather a practice coach. Maybe a normal instructor local to your area could do that function, so you should check out the list of instructors on the BCA website www.bca-pool.com which now has a search utility.

Another possibility is to just ask the person running the counter at the local pool hall to watch and comment on what you're doing. Either pay them or tip them.

Can you explain a little better exactly what you expect this coach/monitor to actually do?

What Bob said...plus you need to be VERY careful about what it is you intend to commit to. Depending on your speed, you could very easily choose the wrong things.

I say this with some frequency on the forums but if you have not taken a basic day-long lesson with one of the top instructors, you are making a major mistake that you will pay for for years to come.

Such instruction will reveal exactly what you need to commit to and will SERIOUSLY accelarate your development in this sport. So, if you commit to anything in the coming years...do yourself a favor commit to that.

(I have no affiliation with any instructor or school)

Regards,
Jim

PS: The issue of "coaching" is so important, IMHO, I am going to start a separate thread about it.

I would just write them down and post them somewhere.

You can lie to your coach about what you have done regarding the accountability part, but you can't lie to yourself.

Only you will know if you were truely dedicated to your goals.

Edit: Or better yet...Why not post them in this thread and then update with your progression and what you have done to acheive them.......

Thanks for replying

Thank you all for replying.

Randy, Blackjack, and Bob - Based on everthing I have read from you guys, I think what I am looking for is someone like you in the Northeast (South Jersey to be specific). I have taken some lessons from a professional and BCA certified instructor and I am a very decent player who can and has won a few local tourneys but not with the consistency that I would like. I would also like to break out of finishing in the top five in some regional tournaments and actually win them.

I have a full time job and I guess I am just looking for someone to check in with me to make sure that I am keeping pool important enough to myself to include practice time in my busy schedule (I am not a player that can just show up and play to an expected level - practice matters).

I hear you guys saying find someone at the pool rooms but there aren't too many that are serious and yet willing to share. I am not against paying for the service but I think it is someone special to share it with.

Breaknrun - I am not about to lie to someone or especially not myself. It's just that I have had past experience that when you say it out loud, there is even more commitment to follow through. I'm hoping that just by throwing this thread out there, I have said it.

Again thanks for your responses

You know what, I think this is an excellent excellent idea! Not to hijack the thread but.....

For those of us who want to improve, a coach is an amazing idea! Someone to help set practice routines, hours played/practiced, etc. I wish you luck on your improvements this year. I now know what my New Years resolution will be.. to get a coach also :)

You've taken a big step just by posting this on here. If you take the next step and post your specific goals on here, you will find many people that will gladly hold you to them. They will "check" on you constantly. Could you handle that little minnow?
