Im making a fixture to spin my cues on while i spray them with clear, and im thinking i will use a small foot long piece of taig bed on each end to mount a spindle, and tailstock to. I want it open in the middle to help my exhaust catch all the fumes. Anyone have any small pieces of bed laying around? Also, id be interested in a taig spindle or headstock too if the price was right. Im planning on using a sewing machine motor with a variable speed controller to spin the cue. As usual, im open to any and all suggestions. Thanks!

You can get these from taig or cartertools 6.00 dollars apiece

Will bolt right onto a 1020 extrusion

Thanks Chuck! Ill go check it out!

Those are the mounting plates used on their mills to hold spindle on the Z axis. I have used quite a few of them. If you go to the taig web site and look at the parts break down for the mill you will be able to get a part #. Nich at Carter tool has sold me quite a few of them. Send him an e-mail with a good description and he will know you need.

Jim.

how would you do this?

I may be stupid but how would that piece of 1080 extruded bolted on to that 6.00 plate make a cue spin? I need something for spinning my cues also. Something cheap would be very good and i have plenty of that stuff laying around work. Can smeone please send me some pics to caclemmer@att.net or justpost them on here.

Thanks

I was planning on using a sewing machine motor with a variable speed controller i got off ebay.

You would then proceed to mount both a head stock and motor on one end and a tail stock on the other end.
Instant cue spinning device. Great for both a sanding and finishing lathe for a serious fraction of the price of a ready built.

God I love this forum more than my own wife.

Well where can you buy a decent head and tailstock for a good price. All i can find on the web is expensive junk

May be able to get them for less used, but a new taig headstock and tailstock will run at least a bill, and that's not including a chuck, pulley, motor, or any tooling to mount the cue. Then You can add the cost of 80/20 and the brackets on top.

To simply spin, for spraying a cue, you don't have to have something quite that ridgid, a simple spinning fixture is enough. The important thing is that You can control the rpm's. If you are wanting to sand on the cue also, then maybe a modified wood lathe could be had for cheap or the taig setup mentioned would be better. Not sure how well a sewing motor would work for sanding though. Depends on the motor I suppose. I have used sewing machine motors for other things. It doesn't take much to put a load on some of them, and I could sometimes see an arcing of the brushes through the vents, so proper ventilation aside, That is something that would concern me if using flammable clear. Water based or other non flammables not as much though.

If money is not an object, then the taig setup would be nice, I just feel that if It were me, I could put those kind of parts to better use elsewhere.

You're right Greg. If a person can get a cheaper wood lathe, they make small 3 jaw chucks for those which would be big enuff to hold a maintenance mandrel. And a 1/2" drill chuck with an MT 1 or 2 would be easy for the tail stock. It could be a lot cheaper if you look around.

ok thanks guys

I used microwave oven motors to spin the cue. I mounted them on a piece of angled metal. I then mounted some pillow blocks on the other end with with delrin to act as a live center.
