That spindle bore is just slightly larger than a 13 mm tip. I would suggest going with something a little larger. Ideally you would want 1 3/8"+ spindle bore and 40" or so between centers. That would let you put any part of the cue through the spindle or between centers.

If you really want to get started with repairs, contact Chris Hightower and he will get you going with something that will be what you need. Trust me when I say it is better to spend more ONCE than it is to try and save a bit, then have to buy again. This way you will not go wrong. I know all about buyers remorse and "man, wish I would have bought that" or "I hope I'll be happy with this". When I bought my Wilton for 3k the very NEXT day a Clausing Colchester came up for the same price, with lots of tooling, collet closer.....ect, 3 miles from my house!!!

I know ALOT more about machines than I do now, and I thought I did my homework back then.

Based on your questions, I suggest you trust Chris to guide and sell you what you need.

It's funny because I was going to call about that lathe, but if it can't turn at least 36 between centers, it won't work. With the tiny spindle it wouldn't be good for anything else either.

I would not buy anything without a spindle bore of at least 1 3/8th inch, and at least 31 inches between centers.

I don't understand why everyone's knocking this lathe.

Me neither for my main lathe, but I have 11 working lathes in my shop, most of which are set up for specific operations. Several of them are of a smaller variety which work great for the operation I've set them up for. It's a lot more efficient to move to a different work station already set up for whatever operation necessary, than keep changing your set-up for each operation.

ALSO>>> Often these headstocks can be bored out to a larger id. I've done this a couple of times. While small, it might make a great lathe for doing ferrules or it could easily be set up to cut ring work with a router on the cross slide or several other things.

If this was local, and I didn't already have 3 or 4 lathes in storage I've never had time or the real need to set up, I'd probably buy it myself. When it comes to cuemaking, the more lathes the better.

Just more hot air!

If you can ask this question...............

IMNSHO - not buying this lathe for $300 would be criminal.

The Taig will work fine IFIFIFIF they will sell you one with the same
spindle Hightower gets - their standard thru-hole is only 3/8 in.

The Atlas will work fine for tips, ferrules and many other
shorter-than-a-butt-or-a-shaft pieces.

What exactly do you mean by 'repair cues'

To work on a whole butt, like say installing a linen wrap,
or polishing a shaft - you will need to do some modifications
and/or clever adjustments.

All I can say is me too buddy, me too...
I feel like I--- :banghead: ---all to often lately.

or....

If your willing to spend $450 for the Taig, I would go with this lathe.

He sells them on here often.

They often get good reviews, and the guy is supposedly very easy to work with.

Just my .02

buy that lathe!!!

buy that lathe and then ask ????'s can't lose on that one......close to me it would be gone already! jmo

so i drove 100 miles to look at that lathe and i brought a shaft with me, ive found that it was not worth the money to buy it, the inner diameter of the spindle is almost 13mm's and there was not much more room for boring it out, so i guess my search will go on for the right lathe
