I played on Diamonds with perfect cushions

Yesterday I played on 5 different 7' Blue label Diamonds where the cushions played amazing. About the same as a GC Superspeed cushion. The angles were maybe a tad shorter, but the "boingy" pinball bounce was completely gone.

I've been very vocal on this board that I don't like Diamond cushions. These 5 tables were all great. If every Diamond I played on were like these, I would have loved them.

They were at a bar in Levittown, PA, called Five Points Sports Bar. I was in a big 64 man chip tournament with about a 5k payout for first place counting the calcutta. The room was packed. I played on all 5 of the room's tables, and they all played well.

Two of the tables were in a separate section that was super cold (uncomfortably cold), the AC was different there. The other three tables were in a section where the AC was comfortable, and room temperature. Even with that temperature difference, I didn't notice a cushion difference.

The tables and balls were about 5 years old I'd estimate. The balls were Cyclop. They showed their age. Lots of microchips and scuffs for phenolic balls, and not polished. They had lost their luster, and I don't believe the room has a polisher. The floor was wood so I imagine the ball damage was from landing on the floor. They were not sticky though. The cloth looked to be about 1 year old and used daily in a heavy commercial environment. It looked to be either 860 or a knockoff worsted cloth. The bar is owned by pool players, so the tables get constant use from good players.

We played all day from noon until midnight. Below is the weather report from noon to 6pm, and from 6pm to midnight. It was comfortable both outside and inside the whole time.

I don't know what to say. I see so much variation in Diamond cushions from room to room (only talking about Blue). I sure wish they were all like this.

Trust me, all Diamonds leaving the factory play like those did, what happens AFTER that is the changes the tables go through once other people get their hands on them!

In my area if you have Diamond tables you care about pool and invested serious money. They are set up correctly. Cloth installed correctly. Bolts torqued correctly. Table leveled correctly. Cloth kept clean, etc. I've not seen the "huge" difference people talk about on diamonds banking. I can travel 30 minutes one way or an hour and 15 minutes the other way and the diamonds of varying ages and conditions play pretty much the same. I can travel across town and find 30 Valleys and none of them play even close, even in the same room on the same day.

It's all in the setup. If you have some yokel shade tree mechanic tune your Ferrari, I'm guessing it's going to run like shit. Take him an F150 and he might be able to tune it up good.

Take any vehicle to a hack and it will run like shit, even if he charges you double the going rate for his services.

Unless you guys have set up your own table to nitpicking level of perfection you cannot fathom the difference table setup makes. Hell, even on my table that I nitpicked to hell and back, I can tell how much tougher it plays ten thousand games in. People say it isn't rocket science but it sure isn't tiddlywinks either.

I used to love 4 3/8" pockets for the first year or so... now I'm starting to hate em. Rattles when I didn't used to get rattles, but it's also why pros now play on new cloth with 4 1/4" pockets. Try that on a year old table... not happening, though it might make a decent 1P table.

You can make a Ferrari run worse than a Geo Metro if you don't know what you're doing.

When I got my new Diamond from the factory, none of the rail bolts were tightened at all. The cushions were so dead, I couldn't believe it. Once I torqued them to 15, it was like night and day. I check them a couple of times a year.

Yep, glad you came around to realizing the tables are fine, they just need to be maintained properly.

No, this is not true. I’ve played on plenty brand new from the factory I hated at DCC, Philly expo, and new in various pool rooms. Even Glen said in the other thread those tables in Texas were straight from the factory.

I would say every room I’ve played in within a hundred mile radius of me, all the rails are super springy and the banks are off (banking wide) to the point it’s maddening. If you pound the ball and shorten up the bank, then it’s fine. If you hit it at a slow to mid speed to play position, man, who knows? I’m sure the balls aren’t supposed to come off the rail FASTER than they go on, right?

I was at Amazin Billiards the other day. The GC4 banked so close to the same as a Blue Label Diamond. I just don’t get why so many people complain about Diamonds other than the deep shelves and hanging balls their almost identical.

I was there a month ago. Awesome place!

Its weird. There are so many players that have very strong opinions on both sides of this. Including very experienced and high level players on both sides. I really think it's an environmental difference. Not a player perception difference.

If every (or most) Diamonds I played on were like the GC4's at Amazin, I would have been praising them for the past 15 years on here instead of hating on them.

I said they were factory built, but Bad Boys uses them in tournaments over and over again.
