I ran my first century in snooker today

I stopped by the poolroom today and saw a buddy of mine on the snooker table. He asked me to play a game so I did. I let him break, and as he usually does, he smashed open the reds rather than play the typical safe break. I got left with an easy shot on a red and the colours mostly on their spots, except for the pink and blue but they were accessable. I preceded to just run balls until I got 82 (or something like that) where I was left with a tough bank, which I made and continued until I finally missed.

In all I ran a 112. I just felt like shouting it out on the roof tops. The best part about it though was that I ran it cold, no practice.

gz cameron, i never made the magic century. must be one of the hapiest moments in your life. im sure it would be mine. keep up the good work

Was that a 12' or 10' snooker table Cameron?
If it was a 12 footer, it's an exceptional effort for a non-serious snooker player.

Thanks everyone. it was on a 6x12. Actually I am a off and on serious snooker player, even though i don't have snooker cue. My interest always skyrockets when Im following ranking event online. The only problem is there aren't many serious players around the Ottawa area and and their arent any tournaments that I know of :(. The only games I can get are with the local pros, and although I have some impressive high runs, I can't compete with those guys. I still have to work on getting position on the colours to break into the rack. But if the reds are already broken up I can do some damage.

Good stuff, Cameron. When a man runs a century on the big 6X12, that's when you know he can really stroke the ball!

Well done! thats a great break. I've only made it to 76 I think it was on a 6'x12'. The tough thing was I did'nt have a snooker cue like you.

Can anyone tell me how a century in snooker compares to a 100 ball run in 14.1? thanx,

Gerry

Cameron,
Congratulations, that's quite an accomplishment. I appreciate the report. Many of us enjoy hearing the exploits of the forum members reported, I wish there was more of it.

First, congrats on the "Ton" the first time is sweet for sure.
14.1 and snooker centuries are hard to compare, such different conditions. But having done both, making tons at snooker is definately tougher, some of those tables are pretty tight and require you to be hitting the ball well to run that many balls.

I think its difficult to say which is more difficult the century or the 100 ball run. On the one hand in snooker you only have to worry about breaking the balls once (outside of clusters and what remains of the rack) but the tight tables add a lot of difficult to it. I don't know what my high run in straight pool is cause I don't get many matches in it and when I practice I don't keep count (I find it keeps me from zoning out).

If I had to give the nod to one or the other I'd have to say the 100 ball run, simply because you have to find at least 7 break balls (if my math is off I apologize). Furthermore you have to keep it together mentally for a longer period of time. The last reason is that in snooker you will come accross situations, like I did, where the balls are open which lends itself to scoring oppurtunities. Though not to say it is easy, its certainly not. I can't imagine doing it 4 consecutive times as some top pros do. But that's possibly where the difficulty of snooker comes in. Whether you run 74 or 147 your only one frame ahead, you've got a whole lot more to do to win the match. But a 100 ball run you're almost at the finish line. But who knows maybe 4-5 years 4 consecutive centuries will be the usual for me :D.

Keep in mind at snooker you will be required to break reds from the pack, get a shot on a red and stay close to higher value balls. Rail balls will present there own issues, problably requiring them to me moved.
Add to that the precision required in potting balls. The colors are more than likely required to make the ton and if they are not on their spots this could present more difficulties., you must also get to the yellow to start.
I still believe the snooker run to be more difficult.

thats true. It all depends on the variables. From a shot making perspective your asked to do far more than in pool. Position play can also be very daunting because that. Especially for beginners, they generally just want to make that ball and if they get on a colour, bonus.
