I saw Wang Can in Tunica this morning.

He and Pagulayan were practicing side by side on the two Diamond ten footers in the back. That was quite a show. The young man is an amazing talent. You really can't get a true sense of how small he is from pictures and video. Pagulayan looks like a muscle bound Marine standing next to him. After a while one of the Asian women players came over and was talking to him. I do not know her name. I have seen her before. Anyway, even she was bigger than he was. If the kid weighs 80 lbs it's because he's carrying a 10 pound pool stick. :D

Pagulayan finishes up and put his cue back in the case and is watching Wang Can hit balls. Wang says to Alex, "You me play". Pagulayan says "No. You too good. Need handicap." And walks off. How strong is that?

Wow...1st...but impressive. Why not Alex play. I remember Alex saying "if you say you the best, I'm not saying your not, but I want to play you to make sure" (paraphrase)

Usually easier and more productive than saying something like "you don't have enough money" or "you can't win" etc etc

I like to call it, jockeying for position.

I know Alex wouldn't need my money to play but I'd gladly put up 5k on him against this kid.

Personally I have seen Wang play 4 sets. I dont know how many he has played in his life but I can only attest to having seen 4.

Against SVB he was a 10 -2 winner.
Against Mika he lost twice I think it was 10-7, 12-5
(yes I know Wang got second but Ive only see him play real good once)
Do you think Mika is afraid of him?
And today against the Greek Nick E.he lost 10-5.

So Ive seen Wang win 1 and lose 3.
And Ive seen him make mistakes.
I cant tell you how many sets Ive seen Alex play but he has a huge winning percentage in the sets Ive seen.

I think Alex would play Wang

Just looking at it from my own small point of view...

I would think that Alex is being kind...he was good with kids..even when
he was a kid.

Alex and Pacman have been good to a lot of young players.

Just playin

I'm sure he was just playin around. Unless Wang has a backer or a boatload of cash, what would be the point of them playing for Alex? He may have been working to stir up some though.

Stronger than a garlic milkshake

Wang may or may not become a great player. After all he's only 19 so it remains to be seen how much he develops. I give him credit for coming all this way on his dime. That shows me he is dedicated to getting better and facing tough competition. He will be playing in Las Vegas next month as well.

The women player mentioned was none other than Ga Young Kim, the womens champion here. She played in the Banks, losing her first match, but she is staying for the 9-Ball. Some men may not like it playing her, she is damn good. And Ga Young plays all games, rumored to be a .900 Three Cushion player.

I think Wang is discovering that the top men are not in the least intimidated by him and he is getting some bruises now. How well he handles it will determine what kind of player he's going to be. I've seen more than a few come and go after they get beat on a little. Second place in this field was an amazing accomplishment though. The kid did want Alex to practice with him and he has been rumored to gamble in the Philippines for small stakes. But to play Alex a high dollar set, no way! He's not ready for the big leagues just yet.

Might have been kidding. Might have been the kid just came in second in the Ultimate 10 Ball and was felling a bit cocky. It was obvious that both were in good humor towards each other. All the players were teasing the kid. One of the players came by while the kid was down shooting at the ball and moved the cue ball to the middle of the table. It was funny. On the 10 footer the kid couldn't reach the cue ball if it got between the side pockets. :D

Thanks for the cool pool information about today's players! :)

I thought that might be you over on the other side. I was in the stands behind them. Great to see them both. What was that 4 ball billiard thing he was doing with Ga Young?

That's Korean or Taiwan Billiards, depending on who you talk to. It's played with four balls on a 9' billiard table. There are many of these "poolrooms" in Los Angeles. I don't really know the game or how it's played. There are various ways to score points, that's about all I know. And Ga Young played better than Wang at it!

It's played like this.

You have one yellow ball and two reds. The one, 3 and 11. To score you have to carom the yellow and either red, both reds and then all three in a sequence. If you do that then everyone pays you. You shoot until you miss. If you carom all three balls out of sequence you have to pay a penalty into the table time fund.

You can make balls and they just respot. Scratches end the turn.

Is there a possibility that Wang was asking Alex if he and Alex were to play in the first/next round of the tounrament? Given that Alex was watching the kid it is very possible Wang assumed that Alex was his opponent in the event and had not checked the draw sheet yet and he was asking Alex "Do you and me play?" and he meant in the tournament.

JB explained the Taiwanese version of the game and that is played on pocket tables in Taiwan as carom tables there are rare. The Korean version of the game is much simpler. Look up "Sagu" or Four Balls on google and you'll find some information on it. Basically there are 2 cue balls (1 yellow 1 white) and you want to carom off the 2 red balls without touching the other cue ball. Successful carom = 1 pt gained, and a miss is minus a point.

Thats the Taiwanese game called kairun (or that's what they call it in Japan, not sure what they call it in Taiwan), usually played on a pool table (one of my favorite games, btw).

4 ball is actually a different game played on a billiards table (similar to straight rail) that is popular in Korea and was popular in Japan pre-color of money.

saw wang at Mountain View CA

After watching him play, he def. has talent...he beat Francisco 8-2; then I watched him miss some shots and lose to Dennis Orcullo hill-hill......
I believe Jay's assessment is correct about him....gonna take some seasoning to find out how good he can become.......

Thanks for the heads-up.

It looks like Can Wang is getting the seasoning Jay thinks he needs.
