I want to build cues.

Get the cue building book and DVDs from Chris Hightower.
Also the cue building DVDs from joe barringer are very good
Unique products also has some very good DVDs

I would suggest you buy a Hightower Deluxe without all the add ons. Start doing cue repairs etc, see how you like it. You can use profits for taper bar etc. It takes a big man to start small.

Ive always had an awe for what cuemakers do, i mean to take a couple pieces of wood and make artwork out of it is amazing, lately i have been getting more and more interested in it but im confused on how to get started, obviously i need a lathe...but where do i go from there?

Does anyone have some good books they can reccomend or know of any material online?

I have no woodworking skills or carpentry skills, i slept thru construction class in high school which is a shame because they had quality lathes.

Respect to cuemakers.

You are close to DP cues contact him maybe for a smallish fee he may let you come to the shop for a couple weeks at least you could see what you are getting in too;)

starting small defiantly makes you appreciate every upgrade you get and makes you have to be creative to accomplish a build till you do Disclaimer: may causes many expletives and copious amounts of beer consumption

One question,... do you play pool on a regular basis? 2 things in this 'hobby' business, IMO, is the desire to do your best, as if your playing the final match for the money, and the love of the game. Without that kinda drive, it will be just another disappointing day at the office, and a bunch of money wasted along the way.
The Hightower DVDs are great as is Chris himself, and as others mentioned, Barringers dvds...with some filtering, can be useful.
wish you good luck on your quest, alot of us have been on that same one ourselves.

Agreed. Unique Products makes the Travel Tipper mini lathe that you can get started with doing tips, ferrules and shaft cleanings. Use that money to buy into bigger machines. Both Hightower and Unique (and Porper) make quality machines.

So true.... you sure you want to get into this? :D
It's a sick addiction and mixture of frustration and joy not to mention a huge money pit for upgrades, supplies, new toys, jigs, oh and wood...

Thanks for the replies everyone, Im definetly going to check out as many dvds and books as i can before i jump into and decide if i really really want to put alot of time into it, i would hate to buy an expensive lathe and end up hanging laundry on it:smile:

Hey trent did you get my PM?

im not sure ive had alot of PMs lately email me at the email address in the sig line for faster response

get a good paying job

i own a jewelry store and have been in the jewelry business for 40 plus years, so i can afford to build cues. desire is very important in cue building, but money ranks a close 2nd. i am not trying to talk you out of building cues, just trying to give you a real perspective, YOU ARE NOT GOING TO GET RICH BUILDING CUES.
do not buy junk equipment, do not buy cheap wood [ accept for practice or experiments ] do not listen to everyone telling you, " you have to do it this way, because billybob does it this way " learn the basic cue building techniques, then build cues that YOU like.
welcome to the wonderful world of cue building

I started out in this cue making stuff about a year ago. I thought I could get a little lathe and make sneakys and that would be all I needed. So far, I've invested about $8,000 in this crack habit called cue building, lol. No matter what you think, you will want to upgrade, make new machines, build fixtures, and so on. It never ends, which is why I love it :)
