I Want To Buy All Cues.......

Wow....this is gonna be harder than I thought!!!

Now that I've taken the plunge, and decided to focus my collection efforts in one particular direction, I've come to realize how difficult it's going to be!! Not from a "I can't find a cue I want" angle.....but from a "I wanna buy every cue from every maker I see" angle. :o :o :D

After spending so much time and effort getting ahold of such great cues over the last year, I'm really feeling the pinch, every time I see a cue the
"old me" would like to buy. There have been 8 cues over the last week, alone, that I was chomping at the bit over...but none of 'em from my new cuemaker of choice.

I thought it would make things easier to pinpoint my collecting efforts in one direction....but now I've got TWO empty cases in my closet, and I swear that they speak to me while I sleep....BEGGING for me to fill 'em up wth nice cues (and one of 'em is a 4x6 !!).

Does it get easier over time, or am I hopelessly addicted...and destined for a life of repeated self denial?? :D :D :D

GOOD MORNIN' YA'LL......HAVE A GREAT DAY!!

It doesn't seem to be getting any easier for me. I admire people like you, Marcus, Jimbo, and others, who have found a theme and are pursuing it. The only themes I see to my current cues and the ones I have on order are:

- quality cue makers whose work I admire
- classically inspired designs, or twists on those designs
- cues that I like the feel of in my hands and when they stroke the ball

Other than those, I am all over the place . . . :o And, I still have several on my "wish list". :D

Mark,

I would suggest that you maintain your focus on Black Boar cues, and the patience required to save and search for the next addition. I've seen a few Black Boar cues this week on ebay that might make a nice addition! I would ask, have none of them rang your bell?

A good person to emulate is Chris Tate with his Palmer collection. Perhaps once you hit the 20 cue mark, you might wish to display in some of the cue shows? Remember that you have some extremely rare Black Boar cues that you started off your collection with, and I'm sure other cue collectors would love to see them in person.

Just reject the temptation to add a non-boar cue at this point and save up more duckets for the next Black Board addition, because lets face it...they aren't going to get any cheaper! I would recommend setting a goal of "x" Black Boar cues. Once you meet that first goal, reward yourself by buying a non Black Boar cue. These were just a few ideas for you to think about.

Good luck in your collecting sir. I look forward to meeting up with you in the next couple of weeks and seeing those babies in person, and shooting some pool!

Take care,
Matt

Thanks for the quick responses, ya'll.

HighRun - As far as my "collection" goes, I only have 2 Black Boars...but both of 'em are pretty noteworthy. Both are linked in my signature block.

Scott - wow.....I'm admired!! :) :) I've seen some of the cues you have, sir...and you have just as much...if not MORE..."direction" than I do. You know what you want, and pursue additions to your collection that meet specific criteria. Sounds like direction to me! :D ;)

Matt - I'm with ya, bro. I'm staying targeted on Black Boars (a couple of my custom orders notwithstanding, of course). It's not that I'm giving up the fight......FAR FROM IT. I just didn't imagine that my addictive behavior was so severe that it actually manifests itself in physical PAIN ( ) to not buy a couple of cues here and there. It's what I've done since the beginning...and it feels weird to intentionally avoid the immediate gratification fix I get when I buy a new one! As far as the ones on E-bay go, I've seen several pop up...but none of 'em panned out well. Mainly for two reasons: One - the seller didn't return e-mails asking particular questions. Two - Some guy named "onepoc" is buying every one of 'em that I see....and it appears as though his pockets are deeper than mine!!

If you haven't already attempted, I would follow Tate's example and maybe try to get a complete set of the early cues with the boar's head in the butt. These will definitely not be getting any cheaper, and he is not making any more like them. Once you have the set, go for the newer stuff. But if a newer one pops up, well, you know what to do!

Yep...that's my plan. Aside from the fact that the newer ones FAR exceed the cost of the older ones, I'm really kinda preferable to the old-style cues, anyway.

In a perfect world, I'd like to get 2 or 3 more of 'em...and have a healthy little set.

As far as getting the full run....I do believe I'd have to knock of a couple 7-11's in the local area first. :) :)

Thanks much!

I think I may have a an old brochure from their first production line. I know I had one, just would need to find it if the wife didn't throw it out. Kinda neat, if I remember it had a violin and compared the cues to a Stradivarius! I could also give you a rough guesstimate of the new cost at that time. You may have all of this already anyway.

Nope!!! I don't have a single piece of literature on 'em.

I'd love to get my hands on one of those....or maybe a scanned copy, at least?? I'd be happy to compensate ya for the trouble!!

Ahhhh....much like a crack dealer, you're there to "help." !! :) :) :)

Thanks, Ken. I've checked out your site a couple times....and have had to change my shorts quickly thereafter! (yuck!)

Any Black Boars hiding around in there?? :)

Hi Rat!
I'm glad that you made those empty spots in your cases, as I'm one of the beneficiaries! Just absolutely LOVE that SCRUGGS!

OK - on to staying focused: I spent 2-3 years buying only cues from one cue maker. I essentially cornered the market, though that was an unintentional by-product of my efforts. I was getting emails and phone calls like "Hey Von, some guy in Cali is buyin up all the Bricks he can find and paying top-dollar!"
My reply: "Yeah, I've known him for decades..." :D

It requires discipline. It is particularly challenging in the beginning, but as your collection grows, maintaining the committment becomes easier. Learn all you can about Tony, his trials and tribulations as a CM; search out his first 6-pointer (or 8, etc) then buy it with no regard for the cost. It becomes a journey with no known destination, but plenty of rewards along the way.

IMPORTANT: Try not to regard each purchase as an investment, at least not a traditional one where you're concerned with ROI, appreciation factors, etc. It's more like buying Fine Art and the value of each is only determined by you.

No BB's hiding in this picture. But, it might tempt your "other cue" crack habit. This is the current lineup after some changes over the past couple of months. . . . :)

Scott....you're all heart, sir.

Thanks to you, I bought an Olney. (well.....technically, it's not because of you....but you gave me an "out"....so I'm gonna go ahead and lay blame at your doorstep. Hope you don't mind.)

I've had a few "done deals" fall through on Black Boars....and one in the pipeline that ought to be completed in another month or so.....so I guess I'm gonna cut my difficult losses and revert.

Oh, well. Can't say it's tearing my heart out........ :) :)

By the by.....nice lineup! I assume the two Hoppe cues are Herceks??

mark i'm glad to see you have joined the "addicted to buying cues" club. we meet every other thursday in the same building as AA.

Thanks, Guy. Having a strong support network is the key to success.....or so I'm told.

I can't believe I had convinced myself to go one way.......and offloaded my cues to do so. I'm not sorry I did....as I picked up a couple stellar Black Boars! Finding others, though, proved to be next to impossible in a "realistic" sense.

I guess I'm going back on the wagon. It was a hard fall off the edge....but I'm climbing up the tailgate as we speak!! :) :)

A good friend of mine made a passing comment that rang so true, I had to do a double-take.

I, 8-ball Rat, have fallen in love with the feeling I get when a mailing tube arrives at my doorstep. I'm addicted to the rush...and I'm starting to see my mailman in a rather inappropriate way.............a telltale sign of a problem, I think!! ;) :)
