It took a month for the article to come out, but here it is.

I actually won 9 on the B side, but where it states that I hold the record for longest Sunday comeback at this tournament, that is wrong. I still hold the record when I lost my first match a couple years ago and won every match and then it wasn't a single race in the finals, but I had to beat Mary Hopkin twice for the win. :D

NWPA KICKS OFF 2006 SEASON
On March 18-19, the Northwest Women's Pool Association held its first tour stop for 2006 at the Parlor Billiards and Spirits in Bellevue, WA. Keeping with its goal to be the top pool room on the West Coast, the Parlor, in addition to adding $750.00 cash, also purchased not one (1), but two (2) Qualifying spots to the Women's Pro Tour. One for the BCA Championships in Las Vegas and one for the San Diego Classic. This news had spread across the country bringing players from not just the Northwest, but places like Calgary, Edmonton and even Florida.

....But the big news was our full schedule of seven events. Five of which are WPBA Qualifiers. Please visit our website: www.nwpatour.com for more info or Billiard Paper for schedule.

The tournament itself, which started at 10am Saturday morning, had a deep field of 46 players and it would take till late evening just to bring the field down to the 16 players who would battle it out on Sunday.

On the A side, Martha Hartsell defeated Liz Cole 7-5 and Cathy Metzinger got Kim Jones 7-4. In the point match it was back and forth to 4-4 before Cathy won 3 in a row to take it. On the B side, Kim then played Mona Remedios from Edmonton with Mona winning 7-3. Conversely, Linda Carter, who having lost to Kerry Impson early Saturday, had to fight through the B side, starting at 9am Sunday. Linda started off 7-0 against Mary Ellen Homenchuk from Surrey, BC, then got Ellen Van Buren from Florida in what may have been the match of the day, 7-6. Mary Hopkin then fell 7-3 and Liz Cole fell 7-4. Mona and Linda now played and Carter was now on a roll winning 7-3 and then getting Martha 7-2 for the B side point.

Cathy had waited hours to play while Linda was in stroke and it showed with Linda in front early at 4-2 in a final race to 9. They traded games the rest of the way with each player holding break and the early lead paid off with Linda's 9-6 victory. She pulled off the biggest and longest Sunday comeback in NWPA history, congrats Linda.

Due to Linda and Mona having prior commitments and Cathy already a WPBA player for 2006 and not eligible for qualifying spots, the BCA Championship entry went to Martha Hartsell and the San Diego Classic went to Liz Cole. Good luck at these events, we'll all be cheering for you.

I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped organize and run such a big and exciting event, especially Ford, Roger Arndt, Chuck Mellors and Dave Lauer. Also to all the players, who make my job so easy and enjoyable. See you in Salem.

WW,
WELL DONE!!

The win is even more impressive as there is no doubt you were participating under the immense added pressure of wanting to avoid showing up as another casualty in the "Who has defeated an IPT'er" thread.

Well, I am sure there are a lot of people who could say that anyway, lol. Kerry Impson had the pleasure in this tournament. I was up 5-2 and lost focus. I noticed her husband and Bev Carrick that had traveled to root her on and I just sort of fizzled - never won another game in that set.

Thanks for the congrats. :)

Way to go Linda! Were you a little tired after the tournament? What time did you finish your last match on Saturday night?

Thanks Rick and Jake. I got home around 11:30 after pictures, which were not included with the article. I was tired!

Ronoh, not sure what you were laughing about, but I guess it's all good.

nice win!

Linda,

That is a nice win and I suspect at least some of the IPT field won't be any tougher than what you faced in that "little" tournament. The deck is stacked against you in more ways than one in the IPT but I am rooting for you to at least score some serious dollars in a match or two. I really think you have a decent chance of that as long as you believe.

Winning a tournament is never easy. At least not for me. I tried again today and for the umpteen time I failed again.

When I walked into the pool room and looked over the field all the usual suspects were there. And it was immediately known to me that I was the lowest ranked, or whatever you call it, player. They were all better than me.

Nice tournament. $10 entry, race to 5 and the owner added $140. So these guys were not taking any prisoners with first place at $120.
I probably shouldn't say that because now guys, and girls, will be coming from all over. 2nd paid $80. 3rd paid $40 4th paid $20 5/6 paid $10.

I got a good draw and had to play probably the next weakest player (above me) but he got the rolls and I managed to lose. But then I got a few good rolls and won my next three matches. Then I had to play the local shortstop who on any given day would be glad to give me the wild 7 and play for anything. But I managed to get to hill-hill and then he closed the door. But I scared him. I think.

So I came in 4th and won a whole $20. But where else can you have this much fun?

So now we have two pool halls, actually bars, that have $10 tournaments where some pretty good players gather.

So Linda, you go and bust their chops when you get to play in the IPT. Anyone who can win any tournament is okay in my book.

Jake

I feel your pain! We go to a $5 Friday and Saturday usually if we have nothing else going. I occasionally win and almost always place or get HW. But there are some strong competitors there, sometimes Dan Louie goes too.

We went into a new place last week and one of the regulars from our Fri/Sat. was there and of course I drew him. When I sighed, Mike asked me what was wrong. I said it was just my luck to draw the 2nd best player in the tournament and he looked at me very seriously and said, "What are you talking about? YOU are the second best player here!" Wow, that was quite a compliment coming from my husband!

Thanks a lot Jake, Hu, RJ and Scott. I go to the next stop next weekend and now the pressure is really on! ;)

Awesome!
Congrats on the win and thanks for sharing some of the details.

I know I get very tired after a few hours of playing so I am sure you may have been exhausted.
What do you do to ease the tension of the muscles in the trap area?
Saw Allison once (on TV) so tight that she used a bridge for almost the entire match.
I feel it at about 5-6 hours into playing.

I'll bet when you draw the 2nd best player everyone else is overjoyed because they know then that one of the top two will go to the loser's side.

I'm surprised your husband didn't realize that.

Actually, my husband, Mike is the 1st best player and usually is no matter where we go locally. ;)

Myron, I have never had problems with the trapezius muscles tightening during a tournament, but several times I have had a electrolyte/K+ deficiency that makes my foot and fingers cramp. I try to get a banana or some sugar in me and then I am ok.

I have one friend who brings his native acupressurist with him wherever he goes.

Hi Linda;

Great playing, congrats. In June at Hard Times in Sacramento, which isn't too far, they are adding a women's event with a good amount of cash added. The mens has $10,000.00 added. Brings in many players. It would be great if you could make it. Announcements wil be coming out soon. I believe the women's tournament will start on 6/17. It would be great to have you here, and, of course, to meet another Az'er.

Great shootin'

Mike

nice

Good job Linda when you came down to So Cal i was impressed with your pool skillz. But I think i was banking a little stronger. :p

Good luck with the rest of your Tournaments.
