He didn't, Matchroom Sport has 100% of the choosing ability. Corey is the only other one they would have considered. Despite some "opinions" the younger, more inexperienced players would not have been the best choice.
In HIND SIGHT of course any other players would seem to be better because of the final score.....and "hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20".

You are right. I knew who CJ was when he came into our room when he was around 19. I don't think he is known as a hustler, even though most players did it as some point. CJ was known as a great money player because of his lack of dogging it!
Why do you say CJ would be way down on the teaching list? Do you know how he teaches and who he has taught? I would have to think CJ is a great teacher, with his gift of communicating and talent for the game. I know many think good players make bad teachers. I think that rumor was started from the teachers who could never play!:grin:

Alabama was a "hot bed" of action back then. I played Matlock on the bar table not far from where you live......back then EVERYONE would play for days at a time and you had to beat them out of ALL their cash.
Whatever happened to that type of "Heart"? Now if you book a loser it takes weeks to get another game that's half way fair. I know you played your heart out for the cash "backplaying"......I remember walking into your pool room a couple of years ago thinking no one would know me.......it was cool seeing you guys, I'll be back one of these days.

Billy Incardona for Mosconi Cup captain.. Nobody knows the odds better. All the players respect him. He would be good at getting the players on the same page.
Not a slur on Billy for what he would or would not do if captain. But, I can't help but see the humor in putting a known bookie as the captain of the American team. How fitting!

Yep, it use to be the winner was the one who busted the other player, regardless of how long it took. The first thing I noticed when I first started back playing was when I played Benny Conway a 500 set, after several hours he beat me the set and I said heads. He looks at me and says what do you mean. I said heads on the flip for the next set. He said I'm not playing another set, I'm going to the room and get some sleep for my match in the tournament tomorrow. I noticed many of the younger players will beat you a set and quit, this use to be considered bad action when a player did this, and still is in my book. I'm from the mindset that the loser is the only one who can quit.
I actually made Henny sign a agreement before I would play him one time, with a big spot of course and one was only the loser could quit. He was a 1000 winner after playing all night and around lunch the next day he throws the 1000 on the table and said he quit.

Yes, "quitting winner" was taboo back in the gambling days. I went through a time that I was breaking even with players and couldn't quite "take the cash off"......this was NOT a very good place to be if you were a professional gambler in those days.

'ACTED' like you were going to quit winner,..there was a VERY good chance you might not get out with the money !

Yes, I had a match that I'll always remember in "backplaying's" neck of the woods. I gave a guy the 8 and the break on a bar table and we played for over 20 straight hours. It was on cement floors and I was wearing cowboy boots the entire time.
When I went into the pool room in Athens the last time the guy was there......I can't remember his name, I think the place we played was "Franks Lounge" in the upper part of Alabama.
I can't even begin to count how many sessions I played that were over 20 hours....sometimes we'd play several people and even on the last one it was "not allowed" to quit winner......or, like you said, you might get not get to "shoot the 9" because you were shot with the "9mm". I miss those days for some reason.

I left my cigarettes and some money on the table and went in the restroom and out the window a few times back in the day. If you hustled in bucket of blood bars you had better have a 6th sense that things were about to happen to you if you tried to get out with the $. Getting the money was the plan, but a close 2nd for me was the adventure. But if the guy was good action and cool with losing a few bucks I never quit winner. I did set a quitting time before we started a lot of times. Even that can backfire with the wrong guy to hustle. Johnnyt

Yes, I studied under Richard Bandler who has a very interesting history with Dr. Milton Erickson......understanding the Mind, especially subconsciously is a huge advantage.

I like the way you think, C.J. Some of those bullet points have merit, especially the team that eats, lives, sleeps, and practices together in unison.
I don't think you can ask for Number 5, though. That's kind of the cost of doing business, so to speak.

This would make a GREAT documentary from beginning to end. I'm not kidding. If I had the funds and I did not have to work 24/7/365, I would do it in a heartbeat. This would be a REAL reality show and maybe it might just put pool on the map here in America.
