I would suggest 8 ball if you wanted people to watch it. Maybe Chineese 8 ball, as people who know 8 ball can still follow the play, while the tight pockets are presenting more of a challenge to the pros.
If I believed people would be receptive to a "new" pool game, I'd suggest straight rotation, the old rotation game as it is played in the Phillipines. It has the right mix of offense and defence, position and shotmaking. It also will give both players more innings at the table. I also believe playing this game would take the overall skill among the pros to new heights. It is also a simple game that is easy to explain and understand.

Let me say that pool, as we now know it, is in critical condition and the prognosis is not good. The notion that some new and imaginative game (or the rehabbing of an old one) will revitalize the cue sports is not realistic.
I say, do nothing. Let the future of pool take care of itself. A strong possibility exists that pool play may all but disappear at the national level, but my guess is that scattered among the rubble of our once proud past a spark will remain. In some small pool room in some small town someone will walk through the door and ask, "You got any One Pocket players in here?". :smile:

I have been thinking about this and I have thought of a game that could possibly be exciting to watch in a TV environment. I have never seen this played but it is a game that would combine elements of straight pool, one pocket, 10 ball and 7 ball.
For lack of a better word lets call it 9.1 continuous.
So 10 balls, Call shot like straight pool, and like straight leave a single ball the break up the rack. Games could be races to 30, 50 or 100.
The added twist would be that like 7 ball, each person would have a side for their balls so all you balls would have to go in on your side of the table - all 3 pockets.
So it would bring a lot of one pocket strategy into straight pool, and require a lot of aggressive play, and would allow for some really creative safety play and super interesting shots, such as three rail banks, rail first kick shots, combo banks, etc. Also would require very precise position play and moving balls around intentionally.
With the skill levels of elite players they could string racks together but they could also get into interesting safety battles and they would have to try a lot of really intriguing shots that would be fun to watch.
Snooker is such a great spectator sport because of the size of the table, the ease of identifying the balls, and the fact that it incorporates elements of almost every pool game. It is like straight pool with a twist followed by a rack of 9 ball.
My thought would be to try something similar in pool. It could be a really interesting game. It could also completely suck. Flame away.

One pocket should be 90 seconds per turn. Add one 30 second extension per player per rack for both games.

I see no way one pocket could ever be a compelling view other than to people that love one pocket which is even a subsection of the pool community, shot clock or not
Another idea for 1p is use a game clock like chess. Each player gets 30? Minutes per game. If your flag drops , you loose

This is a cool idea.
I too love to play One Pocket. I also like to play Golf on a Snooker Table, with Pool Balls (it's like 5-6 guys playing one pocket on the same table).
One Pocket is a Champion's game, not really the game for those without skills to play just about all the games of Pool N Billiards. But hey, play it if you want to & can find someone to play it with you.
It's fun.
