If you could build your dream room that actually has a chance to stay in business…

This isn't so much a dream pool room as an idea that has pool tables and would probably stay in business...

I live in a college town. I'd take the closed bowling alley and take out at least half the lanes. I'd put in 6-8 barboxes, 4-6 9' tables in a separate room. Dart boards, shuffleboard, ping pong, all the shit. Good food and drinks. Music, but not obnoxiously loud.

It's not a serious pool player's room but it has enough to get people in the door and spending money... I think.

...snip....everything was uniformly lit by overhead fluorescent lights. It was just a harsh and unpleasant environment to walk into. Felt like a DMV with pool tables.
That's what Perimeter lights do. I can't believe people like them. Glare from the side like no other light ever before, and make the whole room bright like a xmas tree. Yuk.

Dream room: Best (well maintained) equipment, furnishings & lighting, the VERY best in a private/separate room (admission only to those who had earned the privilege). NO alcohol or food sold, no music, cell phones banned, only pool, charged by the hr. Open 24 hrs. Good local motels a must, as the best players would likely come from far & wide, for very long stays.
You might want to look into opening a church

Well after some reflection.....we need to bring back cigar smoking back into the pool hall.

I would install a fan, like my local cigar lounge, imagine a hood for a commercial kitchen. You won't be able to even smell it. Cigarettes are allowed and there are less cigarette smokers today. Cigar smoking have increased and we need to bring it back to the public again.

I may or may not be able to properly convey my dream, especially to the level of detail that my Red Bull fueled moment of glorious mania I experienced earlier this morning… but I’m going to do my best to keep it concise yet adequately descriptive.

A straight up pool joint is destined to fail. Overhead is enormous, can’t afford advertising, revenue streams, employees robbing you blind, and 100s of other factors. It has to be diversified. I frequent Chattanooga Billiards Club. It’s gorgeous, yet modest and inviting. Its side business is cigars. I believe it does well in the fact that it’s been open over 30 years. I’ve never opened a business, but I’ve been in successful places and those that closed up after a year. Every successful room has a characteristic in common. There are normal women there, and they’re having a good time. Above all, they go where they feel safe and don’t go to places where they don’t.

Down the street is a vacant grocery store, medium to small sized that’s been begging me. Great location. Big parking lot where there is not a long walk.

The lot will be well lit, no weed smoking in the lot will be tolerated and I’ll have an off duty cop at the front door. The sign out front would be neon, large and beautiful. As soon as you walk in, metal detector. There will immediately be a large counter where you’re greeted with somebody upbeat and positive. Attractive always helps, male or female. Hopefully one of each. At the counter, you see an expanse. There are separate rooms, probably 3, and from the front desk you’ll be able to look in to each, because there will be glass. It will be a regular wall from the waist up, but then glass to the ceiling. It’ll feel open, and you’ll be able to see people having a good time.

The rooms will be:
1. Billiards
2. Sports ‘bar’ but more on that
3. ‘Entertainment’ I guess is the best way to say it. It’ll have the typical video games 🎮 but it will have a couple separate rooms for kids parties, etc. melding this aspect of the business is the biggest challenge. I’ll discuss this later. Obstacles galore but I want kid friendly to be a big part of what I do.

Back to my glass idea. Only one wall of each room, the common wall shared with the entrance area. Each room will be a separate and unique atmosphere, with noise isolated as such. The billiard room will sound like a pool room, sports ‘bar’ same, game room same. Hard to really describe this as I have it in my mind, but when people walk in, they feel safe, it smells clean, is quite and you say ‘oh, wow’. you look to your left and see a room full of people shooting pool through the thick glass wall. You look to the right and on projectors you can see the college football, MLB, NFL, etc games playing. People are sitting at high top tables, bar, regular tables and movie theatre seats for the main screen.

Straight ahead is the game room, again with a glass wall letting you look right in. Not sure how to swing that one.

The pool room will have appropriate lighting and a juke box, but the surround speakers will play at a very modest level. 9’ and oversized 8’ s will be the mainstay, diamond and Brunswick GCIVs, but I’ll also have a 3 cushion or 2, and 2-4 valleys. ID will be taken as soon as you walk in and you’ll be charged $8-10 an hour flat. Everybody. When you leave your time is tabulated. Pick your table. For those who show up by hand themselves and want a pick up game, there will be a light that they can turn on above the table, indicating as such. There will not be a bar in this room. Patrons will have a way to send a text message to the bar with a drink and food request. No orders screwed up. It will quickly be brought to the table by one of the friendly staff. Main bar will be at the ‘sports bar’ section. During regular hours, this room will be 21+.

So much more to say but my afternoon is cranking up and I’ve got people to see. This has been part 1.

I think you forgot about the "chance to stay in business" part. I just don't see that type of room making money. No music or cell phones especially is pretty...harsh
Just shows how out of touch pool is with itself.

The world does not care if you can play 4 rail shape to the short side of a ball on the end rail, just to avoid having to walk to the other side of the table.

Sustainable? A bar with a private table in a locked room.
Not for customers

Not sure where you live but free beer is literally illegal in a lot of places.

A room like that opened up in my smallish, very LCOL hometown in TN about 15 or so years ago. I think it lasted a year or so before folding. It was actually VERY nice but it had absolutely zero ambience or atmosphere, in addition to having no food or alcohol. The place was lit up like a Christmas tree and the tables didn't have actual lights over them. Instead, everything was uniformly lit by overhead fluorescent lights. It was just a harsh and unpleasant environment to walk into. Felt like a DMV with pool tables.
What is LCOL???

Two separate areas. Bar, bar tables(16)( for league and bangers), stage for bands, bingo/ trivia nights, kitchen with respectable food and some healthy options.
Tournament/member area. Diamonds(8), 4 gc, 2 carom, 2 snooker 12x6(one set up for golf). 2 Private rooms for private games 9'( maybe one diamond, one gc. Both with extended rails to accommodate at least 4 and 3/8" pockets.

All equipment ( tables/bathroom/kitchen) kept cleaned regularly throughout the day. Cleaning crew at night.

4 huge respectful and responsible security guards in rotation. Camera's inside and out with good resolution and storage capacity.

All wait staff attentive, taught pool etiquette, smiling and presentable.

Double doors on public entry to keep climate control.(Door>small entryway>door)

Pro shop and house pro

A man can dream!
No, I don't want to run it and can't afford to start it up or keep it going 🤣

I would have a private club with carom tables and possibly one snooker table or Russian pyramid table. No pool tables of any kind. No alcohol or food licenses. Vending machines and ATMs only. Monthly membership fee of $50 as the only option. No employees. Open only when I am there, or to trusted members that have the keys. Closed during the winter to avoid a heating costs. All members sweep and mop the floors before leaving, and also take out the trash. Dress code is suits or business casual. Absolutely no Jane's Addiction. Pot luck every week, I bring home the leftovers.

I would be terribly unsuccessful.

100% disagree. The perimeter lights are amazing and what I'll have if I can find a place (reasonably priced) with a room big enough for the table...
They also have brightness settings.
They also allow you to turn down/off the ceiling lights in a pool hall if you have a bunch of them.

To each his own:) Worst light I've ever seen. I'd rather have the 3 bulbs from 1970.

But the Koreans would love you!
