if you could only spend $250... for all your gear

What I would/did do:

Call David Schmelke and order a model R010 (Purple Heart Full Splice).
Add phenolic collars to the butt and shaft.
Order with 3/8x10 SS Pin.
Order shaft with pro taper.
Standard ferrule and Schmelke tip.
I'd estimate the cue to come out around $120 with shipping
Mueller's has Joe Porper value cases for $20-30, use free shipping code.

I'd be well under $200, let alone $250.

I played with that exact cue for 2 years and played the best league matches of my life.
I even bought some Jim Baxter Purple Heart/Phenolic Joint Protectors for $20.

Not a bad way to go. With the extra cash still available I would spend $30 on a Pro Justa Bridge, a few bucks for Magic Chalk, and a Kamui Tip.

www.Cuesight.com you can get all you need to win a world championship EXCEPT ability for well under $250. And inside the $250 you can get some great instructional material to help you with ability.

tons of options, for me probably that players HXT special with the break cue and playing shaft and longoni's cheapest 1x2 suitcase style case

there's great dufferin and player's for under $100, and great break cues for under $100 and cheap 2x4 cases are everywhere $40

josey dufferin conversions start around $250, that might be an option too

$250 is plenty to get geared up

physics people, straight stick with a decent tip

Hmm, 200 would probably cover my beer tab, and 50 would just about cover the lights.

Now I've put more thought into it...
A 100 dollar players cue
Around 20 on a 1x1 vinyl case
A cube of masters for a few dollars
40 dollars-ish on a Kamui Black H
5 dollars on some wet and dry sand paper
5 dollars on a micro fibre cloth
Which leaves me around 70 dollars...
Using the 70 for 14.1 at a dollar a ball, I'd expect to make my 250 back in a day against your average player...

So why the heck do we spend thousands on cues!?

I suggest Players cues, Sterling case, or he could lift a few more bucks out of his daddy's wallet (when he's asleep) and see what he can buy here.

I got rid of the Schmelke sneaky, because I could finally afford another full splice cue with all the extra doodads I wanted. I didn't need them, but a screw in extension and a 30" low deflection shaft makes the game more fun.

i'd get an elite cue of some sort along with a j&j jump break. you would still probably have 100 bucks left over at which point you can get a 2x4 pro series case of some sort for like 50 bucks. that leaves you with 50 bucks to do whatever with. you can buy an additional jump cue or spend it to modify the playing shaft on the elite player.

So... I had a buddy ask me today how much it really costs to "get into pool"

Well, I didn't read all the posts but, my thoughts are, getting into pool is different from getting the best playing equipment for $250. Getting into pool will primarily require training.

#1 A Player's cue and a cheap case is fine, but the rest of the money would be well spent on Brynes books and videos. It was my choice for initial learning tools years ago and I've seen nothing since as well put together for a beginner.

If money was still left, get a few videos from accu-stats.

This is where I would start.
I only went with gtf because the 2x3 Jb rugged is out of stock.
Then I would start saving some money because I would have plenty more to buy......

I'd buy a Joss sneaky pete and a 1x1 hard shell case.
I'm gonna break with a wallabuska.

Should have a few bucks left to gamble with.

players sneaky and rage break cue totals round $130 add shipping and a cheap hard shell case and you're under $200 for a perfect starter setup

I just looked it up:

My invoice showed the Schmelke cost me exactly $119 shipped.
And I paid exactly $22.50 for the Porper Value Case.

$141.50 and I still have $100 leftover for a little action

My first cue in 1967 cost $19.00
This store had a ton of 2-piece Willie Hoppe signature cues, but they cost $25.00, and most of them were warped.
This cue was straight, I lost it playing one game of 9-ball, the wrap was gold colored, that's no shit.

I like all these answers, all would be good ways to go.
Since were not talking strictly 9 ball, I'd sacrifice the jump cue for a shaft I know I prefer.

I might go slightly over, but a new predator Z-2 would be $220(possible free soft case).
Sneaky pete eliminator butt: $20 on ebay. (Or a McDermott Lucky cue, $35-50.)
