if you could only spend $250... for all your gear

If I had to replace all of my stuff tomorrow, for under $250:

I would buy:

-A cheap Players cue, with a Kamui tip - $115.59
http://www.seyberts.com/products/Pure_X_by_Players_HXT4_Pool_Cue-102576-10161.html

-A J&J jump break, with phenolic tip - $79.96
http://www.seyberts.com/products/J_J_Brown_Jump_Break_Cue-102817-332.html

-A cheap 2x4 case - $45.50
http://www.seyberts.com/products/Black_2x4_Hard_Core_Pool_Cue_Case-1151-208.html

And I would buy it all through the AZBilliards Marketplace, to take advantage of the $18.60 in discounts that are available for these items.

Grand total, including free shipping: $222.45, still leaving enough cash to have the taper adjusted on one of the cues, if necessary.

My first cue in 1967 cost $19.00
This store had a ton of 2-piece Willie Hoppe signature cues, but they cost $25.00, and most of them were warped.
This cue was straight, I lost it playing one game of 9-ball, the wrap was gold colored, that's no shit.

That's awesome!

My dad told me he paid a little over $90 for his McDermott D-9 in the late 80's. Unfortunately, Hurricane Katrina destroyed it.

I bought that Schmelke a few years ago. That's the best bang for your buck you will ever get in a cue.

David Schmelke is great to deal with
I think they work hard to keep their prices low

I just looked it up:

My invoice showed the Schmelke cost me exactly $119 shipped.
And I paid exactly $22.50 for the Porper Value Case.

$141.50 and I still have $100 leftover for a little action

Dave,
I think Schmelke Cues are without a doubt the BEST bang for you buck out there. I have been through NUMEROUS cues over the years (25 at a minimum), many of which were $1K plus cues... and my current cue is a custom cue made by David at Schmelke.

It plays as well as anything else that I have used, and for what I paid for it... its almost unreal!!!

I think that overall the "how much did you spend on your cue" gets way too much importance put on it. If you look at some of the best players in the world, alot of them are using what most would consider "entry level" gear...
shane has a cuetec
earl used to have a cuetec
Thorsten has lucasi or a players (dont remember which "white hybrid" cue)
Johnny Archer has a scorpion
John Schmidt has a fury
The lion has a base model OB Sneaky

I don't understand why what cue you have in your case is a "measure" of whether you are a player or not.
Several months back I started a thread about his specific topic. If you have yet to see it, take a look:

I think switching cues hurts your consistency, unless the current cue
has a serious problem that's holding your game back.
I hope to stick with mine forever.

The cue, jumper, and case were all gifts so 0$ spent on those anyway.
So with my $250 I think I'll get a good break cue
and hopefully I have a few bucks left over for another magic rack.

Different based on how you stated if you sold all of your gear vs. new to pool.

New to pool, 1/2 the money on a couple of lessons and as for a recommendation on a cue from someone - Sneakys are probably better with less frills.

Not new to pool and sold your stuff to pay rent? Take the $250 to Men's Warehouse, buy a suit for an interview and get a better job.

:-)

Players HXT-15 $119
Panther PY71JB $ 105

That leaves $ 36 for a cheap 2x2 case and a 2-pack of masters,
you can get those at seyberts for $ 20.42 so that leaves almost
$ 15 for a simple tip tool (file) and some cuepaper or a q-wiz.

You're good to go.

gr. Dave

cuetec

looks like no one's said cuetec yet, but i'd go with the solid black cuetec with the r360 shaft just like shane's for 150 bucks on ebay, j&j jump break for 70 bucks and 30 bucks for a cheap 2x2 case
250 well spent and that cuetec hits as good as anything else out there

I like the stinger combo the op said....I use a stinger jump/break cue also . Then buy an extra shaft to put on the stinger to play with then a tip tool...the stinger comes with a cheap case.2 or just the money on a playing stick with low deflection and a tip tool. Forget the jump break sticks cause with low experience need to spen d the time practice on ball making and cue ball control, later comes the specialization of jumping and power controlled breaking......I use a george leather case, stinger jump/break cue and a predator sneaky pete with a 314 z shaft , and a muti tip tool

I would go with what the second posted said.

You can get a decent Players cue for $125. A few bucks for a Willards shaper and a curved plastic shaper for tools.

Find a used 2x4 case for $50, maybe less. Look for a new or used 3 piece break/jump.

It can be done with a few bucks left over for a couple of beer and some pool change for the box.

We can't pick used gear!?!?
Lol, i could go off the deep end listing cues you could find.

I would pick an Aska Case, haven't seen one in person, but they look nice from what i've seen.
No break or jump cue, it's unnecessary.
I'd pick up a viking plain jane cue from almost anywhere. They are cheap and play well.
Lastly, I'd buy a chalk holder of sorts for convenience, and a tip tool.

70+100+30=200 with enough left over to cover repairs or gamble

I would try to assemble the backup set up that I have now. I have a scratch and dent cuetec r360 that I paid $100 for, a JB rugged 1x2 for $100 and a bungee jump cue that I'm not even sure where it came from. However, the case and jump cue are used so the disqualify. I'd buy a cuetec r360 for $180 that will probably come with a free case. No need for a break

im currently using a players, had to get rid of my gear to help fix my car. im making due, but for 250 i would go for a used cheap sneaky custom. dont need break cue, and u can get a case for 10bucks. players have gone from 0 to 10 recently with their hxt, would definatley go for that, or schmelke like another poster stated. for 250 your options are quite open, theres so many companies nowadays. shit, i can get a friend to loan me a case, I can play for $56.95, seyberts has free shipping for orders over 50 bucks. AZB marketplace is seyberts. i have 190 left for a month membership at my spot, or upgrade with an OB shaft or tiger shaft. your options are literally unlimited. just need some imagination.
