If you had to play a game of 9 ball for your life...

The question is too subjective....so subjective in fact, that everyone who answers will answer correctly imo.

And if you can't run 3 balls for your life, well, your safety game probably sucks as well. Either way, you are TOAST.
Truest thing I've read in a while.

i'd probably dog my brains out! but if i'm going down i'm going down swinging. i'd shoot at everything i figured i was 70% to make

I can't make ANYTHING 70% of the time. You must be good. :D ;)

I don't remember who it was, but at the first pro match I ever watched, the breaker scratched. His opponent takes ball in hand and plays a safety his first shot. He moved the 1 near the 9 and put whitey in Alcatraz. Breaker misses the 2 rail kick and leaves the other guy ball in hand and a simple combo for the win. There are safeties and then there are SAFETIES.

Gerry,

Do you really totally ignore the other player? Just as one example, what is a safety is very dependent on the other player. If he has a jump cue and knows how to use it is just one example. How do they kick and bank? My idea of what a safety is changes radically depending on who I am playing. What is a safety for a "C" or "B" nine ball player is a duck he has shot hundreds of times for a top one pocket player.

I play mostly my game but it is tempered a bit by the other player. If they make it obvious they have no faith in their ability to make a shot they will see a lot of that type for example.

Hu

Well Hu, The most thought I put into the other guy is when I'm pushing out. Thats when I start considering how well they can jump, or kick, or shoot up in the air at a flyer.....but of course I will temper some choices. I'm going on the spirit of this thread and giving my overall shoot/safe theory for 9ball.....now if they asked about 1 pocket?.....TOTALLY different answer! :)

I wouldn't play it any differently since the goal is still the same, i.e., to win.

I have heard that playing for your life can really improve your game though.

The debate over safeties and offense is always an interesting one. There are two local players here, who are great shot makers and play very well, but they will play 7-8 safeties a game, even if the out is there. They want every shot to be in front of the pocket and shape to be automatic. Although they win a lot more than they lose, alot of us laugh at how many games they lose due to playing an unnecessary safety rather than taking a shot of medium difficulty. Its nothing to see a league or tournament game with either of these players last 15-20 minutes because they continually play safe over and over. I completely agree that playing a great safe is as impressive as making a great shot, but come on, challenge yourself and try and get out sometimes.

I wonder how it would be if you added some brutal martial arts discipline to practice. If after every time you miss, or fail a safety, or get out of position, sensie whacks you really hard with a kendo stick...

..you would play a lot of careful safeties, right?. If so why not play your tournaments the same way? Or don't you agree that safety play results in more wins than good shooting?

One had better focus on "the right shot". That is how you win.

I'd be DEAD

Don't you have to go on "offence" to sink the 9 ball?

Playing safe is boring...especially if both players can't get out with ball in hand in a single game.

I have to say I have mostly been an Offensive type player. I don't like intentially giving up the table to my opponent, which is what playing safe does all the time.

1st of all i wouldn't play a game of 9-ball for my life. Because i can't afford it...;)
I see what you're getting at. I think that is a good mind frame to be in.

If i had to play a game of 9ball for my LIFE...

I would make the other guy post!!

Then ask the for some weight. :D

I Wanna Play With A Big Cueball

I would roll the cheese on every shot and drink a shot on every shot and then simply refuse to die if killed.
