If you live in the SouthWest beware of this HUSTLER.

Well maybe you should start a thread on the defination of a Hustler. To me it is a guy or gal who travel from room to room, or bar to bar that has Pool Tables looking for someone who want to play pool for money.

A Profession Pool Player, who live off of their ability to play pool, or live off their Stick as a friend one discribed a Pro.

hustler IMO is not a Bad Term, it is just a Term that was discussed after the guy and his possee. Several who are more in tune with the world of pool, made the comment about him be a Hustler...

Maybe I should have call him a Pro Traveling Pool player, as I stated no one present when this all went on had seen any of the (3) B4 in this location....

Even with your definition, you're still most likely incorrect. If his "big score" was $100 at the most, and he didn't make any attempt at driving that number up or keeping his fish on the line, then he doesn't make a living playing pool, nor was he likely "travelling from room to room" searching for marks to be relieved of their money. To me, he sounds like a good pool player who found himself in a pool room, and wanted to match up with somebody. You've just described half the people on this board

Could the definition of a hustler possibly include... oh I don't know, maybe someone who hustles other people? Someone "who travels from room to room looking to play pool for money" is called a road player where I come from. And in my book hustler implies some sort of hustle, which I do think carries negative connotations. I can understand that the perception that road players often "hustle" rather than just play, but this is not always the case, and there is a difference.

The guy your talking about is a really nice guy and a striaght up player. He's from Houston, TX. For the life of me, I can't remember his name. He goes to the BCA tournament every year in Vegas and plays what ever you want, at the tables set up for folks who want to gamble. [...]

Yes, I know exactly who you mean. I've played him some. He had his son with him in May, and probably put in 18 hours a day at the action tables. He had kinda sloppy looking hair, and his son had short-cropped hair. Otherwise the apple stayed pretty close to the tree. I remember him from other years too

He seemed like a fine guy, I agree.... mostly bottom feeding for 10 or 20 a rack on people like me...

not my picture of a hustler, mostly because he looks like peoples image of a backroom hustler. Nobody's really going to let his guard down with someone like him.

Now imagine, instead, Mr. Jewett showing up with his briefcase at the garage-door manufacturer's convention....

I was just trying convey that you can tell us how well he plays without giving him a negative and inaccurate label. Use whatever adjectives you prefer.

I asked for a defination of "pretty sporty" a term you used, so what does it mean?????

Like I said he abnd his two traveling companion were not know were I was.

I am in the minority of those on this board, as I am not a MONEY PLAYER, and don't seek to MATCH UP in Money Games......;)

He was probably just in Vegas for the APA and was working his way back to Texas. Not hustling just paying bills. A guys got to eat.
Pool Sleuth would you please do us all a favor and proofread your posts. I am beginning to think you are playing off and hustling us for some upcoming spelling bee.:D :D

Now that you mention that scenario.. I swear to god I was sitting next to him at the Sahara playing poker this past week on Friday night while in Vegas for APA and his 'son' was sitting at the other end of the table. They were playing in the poker tourney and then sat at the $2/$4 table where I was at. After you mentioned this scenario I instantly thought about those two. Cause the younger one said the guy next to me was his brother and they were pitching each other crap. But I would now bet that that was them. Older one next to me was a large man with rutty face and floppy hair and the son did have a clean cut sides with very similar features. Crazy.

If that's the case, why did you use the term "beware" in the thread title? That just smacks of negativity.

I wonder what the body guards' cut was after the $50 in winnings.

Hah! Now isn't that the truth?! Trying to make money playing pool is a joke. I keep thinking about making the commitment to quit gambling just because the few bucks you might win (and, yes, $1000 set, or even more, is a "few" bucks if you look at the big picture) just doesn't seem worth all of the hassle you have to put up with to get it. Not to mention, it's gambling! You might not even win anyway, yet you still have to put up with all of the headaches! Now you're PAYING for the misery!

However, I don't know if I could continue to stay "on the wagon" so I haven't made that commitment yet. ;)

Here is what I think pretty much everyone is trying to tell you:

A. There was no hustle involved. The guy was not hustling and based on what you have said can't be defined as a hustler.

B. No need for anyone out of three cornered pants to beware of someone that comes at you head on for fairly small stakes like this guy did.

I don't doubt that the guy makes a good bit of money the way he plays and gambles. However he is gambling(risking losing also) and from your report giving people an honest game. Few here expect more than that from a stranger passing through.

He was one hell of a 9 Ball Player, fun to watch at work, and for a Big Guy move like a Featherweight...

I know him, he is from Houston. He is a fixture at all Tx tournaments and plays well, however, he is not a hustler. He asks if you gamble, you say yes or no, and you play or you don't. Nobody needs to "watch out" for him.....
