If you live in the SouthWest beware of this HUSTLER.

I will try to make a Long Story as short as Possible. Tuesday night I was in a BAR in PHX (area) Arizona Playing a Tournament, I was waiting with my Tea between Rounds (my turn to Play), as I do not DRINK Adult Beverage, and try and Play when Prizes are involved.

I notice these (2) Asian Players who were both very good players IMO at the other end of the Room, and as I had time to killed, and had done my home work on my potential opponent I wondered down to the other end of the room. to watch the (2) better players at 9 Ball

Sitting on a BAR Stool also watching was one of the Largest Men I have ever encountered, and I really did not pay much attention to him. He casually asked “do you play pool for money, and I replied that I did not play at his level, and was awaiting my turn in the Tournament at the other end of the room.

Nothing more was said, and a few minutes later the HUSTLER got up as apparently he found is Fish. I will describe the guy as Unkempt, with Messy Hair, and a Face like the Famous Wrestler André the Giant. As I said he was BIG, maybe 6'0"- to 6'3", and I would say he weighted in at 450-500 Pounds.

Well the Hustler and the other guy had a bet of maybe 50-100 Bucks for a 9 Ball Set of a Race to 7. The Hustler took home the money, as the Race ended 7 to 1. With in only a few monute of its start.

What impressed me most about the HUSTLER was how a Man of this SIZE could move around a Bar Box like a Ballerina on a Tightrope, and Played Nine Ball better than most I have seen.

As I said if you run into this guy and his two companions, (1) a Sharp Dressing Asian Fellow (I assume he was the Body Guard/Musel), and another White guy that is pretty Non Descriptive (who was the Money Man & Cue Valet) Beware of the Big Guy with the Sneak Pete with DUCK TAPE on the Butt of his Cue, as he is looking to take you money.

Am not sure if I saw his BEST GAME, but like I said beware of the Big Guy who, Played Nine Ball better than most I have seen.

If you do not know who do not know was André the Giant , study these images.

PS, I think you got a major part wrong. If the guy had been a real pool hustler, he wouldn't have squished the guy like a rotten fig. They would still be playing and all of the bar would be betting on the other guy. 100 bucks doesn't even pay for dinner on the road.

Dude, you blew it for him. How's he gonna feed his wife and kids now???

I do not know as I am not a Gambler. Hell I think twice before paying Fees to do a Tournment...

I am sure the guy does well in his career, as there are alway more Fish in the Bowl, who know they are better, and willing to plop down a money to try and be a winner.

I enjoy playing pool, as it is Mentally Challanging, and a never ENDING GAME with New Twist & Turns each time you Break a Rack.

To those who like the Action of Gambling & Playing for Money I say good for you. I personally do not like Gambling on Pool, Horses, Dogs, or Casino Action. Yes when in Sin City, Laughlin, Tachoe, I will gamle like 10-20 bucks a day.

But knbow that in most cases the HOUSE is the Winner, as it is not mine, or your name on those tall building.

Several of the local said after the guy & Company Left, he is uasally in the "PIT" at the BCA, as they remember seeing him up there.

Like I said What impressed me most about the HUSTLER was how a Man of this SIZE could move around a Bar Box like a Ballerina on a Tightrope, and Played Nine Ball better than most I have seen. ;)

Bob think Taco Bell for Dinner LOL Actually PHX has great places for Dinner for (2) under 20.00 BUCKS...

But if you got to have FIVE START & Wine, you are correct about Dinner Prices...

How dare you call me Andre the Giant.... can't go anywhere on vacation without being made fun of. :D :D

He's a straight up player

The guy your talking about is a really nice guy and a striaght up player. He's from Houston, TX. For the life of me, I can't remember his name. He goes to the BCA tournament every year in Vegas and plays what ever you want, at the tables set up for folks who want to gamble. I've watched him play 8-Ball and 9-Ball for $50 a game(winner holds the table and takes on the next challenger) for about three hours. At no more than 8-10 minutes a game, he was doing quite well. He's an amazing player. He finally got really winded and gave up the table. He rested for about 45 minutes and then took the table over again for about 2 hours. So many birds in a row. He was in heaven. He'd always try to up the bet to $100 a game and I'm certain would have gone as high as anyone would be willing to play.
I'll never forget his cue with the duct tape. It looked like something that he pulled out of the garabage. I'm sure it was more for effect. Last year he brought his son. Looks like a slightly smaller version of him. He was more entertaining to watch than the pros. He was like a machine. It was all in the open, no sand bagging. If he broke and got a ball, he'd run out. If on rare occasion he'd get nothing on the break, if his opponent didn't run out, it was over.
What's the nature of your warning? Did he try to scam you? He's a money player and is usually very up front. If you don't want to gamble, as you didn't, he didn't hassle you, did he? So what's your beef with him?
If you would have spoken with him, you would have found him very affable and very straight forward. Anyone who runs into him either needs to watch him play, or if you're good enough, play him a game. He's not the only good player on the road.
Later and good luck to my large friend,
Dr. C

Poolsleuth,

What a few people are trying to say is that you have labeled him a hustler, and it sounds like he did not try and hustle anyone. You say you saw him sitting and he asked you to play. You say he found someone to play and beat him 7 to 1. That is not a hustler. He wasn't at a table playing half his true speed to entice players and winning every set close to keep people playing. He didn't hide his true ability.

You could have told the same story and simply stated how enjoyable an experience you had watching a highly skilled player move around the table in a way that belied his size. No need to talk about the lack of adult beverages and call the guy a hustler warning people to watch out.

A Hustler?

I can't for the life of me understand why you would call him a hustler.

What did he do that was wrong? What was the hustle?

If someone asks you to play a game for $50 I hope you would expect that the reason he is asking you to play is that he believes that he can win.

They only played one game and the loser realized he was outclassed and quit. At least he has some brains. I have watched someone give the 8 and lose 8 straight games at $50 a crack. Both are pros. This day the guy's ego got in the way of his brain.

This guy was probably the bodyguard for the Asians and most likely couldn't beat either of them.

Wow, he won a $100 set. Amazing. Watch out for this terror on the green felt. He was really hustling when he was running out in front of you, then asking you to play, you declining, and him going about his business. He really knew how "reel" those fish in. Sounds like he was just a good player who thought you might be a good player and want to gamble?!?

Andre must have flunked "Hustling 101" at Gambling School! My guess is he'll be taking a lot of that excess weight off as that huge takedown is not going to go very far;)

I had to edit this because I realized my first post was little to angry sounding. I just want to say that if you don't want to gamble, thats fine, but don't interfere with the players who do gamble. If you want to warn us about a player, warn us about one that doesn't pay up, or that steals your cue when you go to the can, but don't warn us about a stand up guy who happens to play for money, and happens to play well. What you describe is nothing even related to a hustle, and labeling this guy a hustler is rude, ignorant, and insulting. If you want to tell us about your experience watching a great player shoot, please do. Tell us that there is a player in town that plays pretty sporty and will gamble. Those of us looking for action will appreciate it.

Well maybe you should start a thread on the defination of a Hustler. To me it is a guy or gal who travel from room to room, or bar to bar that has Pool Tables looking for someone who want to play pool for money.

A Profession Pool Player, who live off of their ability to play pool, or live off their Stick as a friend one discribed a Pro.

hustler IMO is not a Bad Term, it is just a Term that was discussed after the guy and his possee. Several who are more in tune with the world of pool, made the comment about him be a Hustler...

Maybe I should have call him a Pro Traveling Pool player, as I stated no one present when this all went on had seen any of the (3) B4 in this location....

In the absence of subterfuge, I'd say he's just a road player. Or perhaps just a strong player who happened to be traveling.
