If you were not allowed to Gamble on Pool would you quit the game?

Thought I would pose this question, not talking about Tournment were players pay entry fee, and at end winners are payed out from those fee, or added money, or sponsors money, merchandise.

I am talking about strictly match play, Party B, v/s Party A for a wadger, on game, set, or number of games won.

Why not? Perfectly legal.

To answer the OP, I’d certainly continue to play pool, but it would take a lot of the fun out of it, and for the life of me, I can’t imagine how any prohibition could be enforced.

I enjoy doing drills alone. To make it more interesting try playing pool with less than perfect equipment.
Some people love showing the equipment, not showing their skill.
 
There ain't a thing in the world that would make me quit this game. I mean you couldn't give me a million dollars to quit.

Love to play by myself. Can practice for hours. Really have gambled very little in the past years. I have little desire to win anyone's money anymore nor lose my own. In most cases when someone wants to gamble, they actually want a lock.

I always remember guys coming in the pool room and profess "nobody in this place wants to gamble". The answer is sure they do just make a fair game and see how much gamble you get, you'll get plenty.

There's been some talk on here recently about Danny Diliberto. Danny was always broke. One of the reasons Danny was always broke well actually too. One was the racetrack. But the second was he loved to play and always made fair games.

When he was younger he no sooner would walk in the pool room when he's on a table hitting balls and before you know it he's made some game he probably can't win at. Playing some guy one pocket like 13 to 5 or something.

Not for a lot maybe 5 or 10 dollars a game but when you're in a bad game that adds up.

Just the opposite. I don't play for money. I'm often told I'll never be any good if I don't play for money. I counter that if they want to play for money, I could call my honorary nephew, a son of my deceased best buddy. He has a Fargo a few below 700. They ask who...I give the name.
Suddenly, they don't want to get better.
 
I will play a race with a friend for a drink or two now and then. as for cash, i have seen to many people flip out or quit because they lost. And if it is even just for a drink, I will only do so with people i know.

My playing is because i love the game, not the gambling.

To the person who said it is legal .. that is dependent on where you live I believe. legal in some countries/states, not in others.

Pool tournaments are gambling. You put up maybe $100 entry fee you drive like a 100 mi stay a night in a motel. To play for a $3,000 prize fund.

The main difference is it's kind of a common experience amongst all of the players because it's not a head-to-head match that basically represents two egos.

Since no matter how you look at it most of the players who came there and paid entry fees are going to lose. it's not quite as ego defeating and it can be a fun weekend.

I don't gamble, I understand statistics too well to "gamble".
Also, I don't feel it adds anything to "the game".

It’s still a tournament with a specific entry fee and race. Single elimination. The tournament only has 2 entrants.
Back to back tournament is fine

There was a case in Washington state, where 2 players were playing and their partners had money on the side. Harry Platis won the case for the team that didn’t get paid. The judge said, “Two players are involved in a contest of skill(just like a tournament). That debt will be paid. The two partners on the side were gambling and that debt wasn’t valid.”

Would I quit the game...? No, I enjoy beating the will to win out of people too much for that.

I do enjoy betting it up though. Not for the money, but for the added pressure. My worst loss came way back in my teenage snooker years. I lost the match and had to stand on the table during lunch hour and declare the superiority of the winner. (my buddy and archrival) That loss still haunts me....😞
