It was a pies poor structure and caused problems in both events.
I'll be surprised if CSI uses this format again.

Seriously. With 3 days to hold a 16-man tournament, they could have done much much better.
I would say just make the races really long and just go single elimination. Like race to 15 in the first two rounds and race to 21 for semis and finals.

With such a small field and so many fans saying we need longer races to determine who is best I say why not. Races to 15 and 25 are very realistic. Especially with single elim.
I totally agree. Either make the races really long or go back to making them open tournaments. I would personally like to see guys like Earl, Archer, Morris, etc. I know Griffin may not care for those guys, but I may have driven to Vegas or purchased the streams if more of my favorite players were allowed to play in the tournament.
The round robin format does make some sense in this situation. You've got a small group of the very best players, so you want to see them all play a lot rather than get eliminatd early. In addition, the matches are scheduled so viewers know when their favorite players will be playing.
But round robins are kind of anti-climactic because you don't get to see the winning moment, so they gave the round robin a match-play format, and added in the second stage single-elimination. I totally understand the logic of how they came up with this.

Round robin doesn't work for pool. If a v player has no incentive to win it is an incentive to dump and cut deals. If you want to see the best in the world play the lemon keep having these events.
Pool has suffered from the attitude you have for wayyyyy too long.... You want to know whats wrong with pool the answer is as near as your bathroom... Go check out the mirror... IF you would play on the lemon in that situation the sport needs you to take up a new one......
So stop projecting your loser attitude and lack of character on all of the actual professional players... You dump you don't come back..... ever... That keeps the game honest.. Snooker bans players for dumping and most professional sports will as well.... It's time Pool did the same.....

I just spoke to Mark and he asked that I post his comment from another thread into other relevant threads. So here it is.
My suggestion is that all take into consideration that CSI has several huge events still going. Mark does want to provide an explanation and will do so as soon as the dust settles.

The only problem with Pool is the lack of Money and to few events for the players to have a chance to compete at a high level on a regular bases.

Get rid of the dumpers, get more Money in the game. There nothing wrong with this format, it wont be used at all events, so if CSI wants to use it for theirs, so be it. Players hate winner break when a guy runs out the set and they go two and out in a event.
Players hate alternate break if they get behind, players hate short races (7 or 9) so this format and every format should be used and the players that don't like the format can wait for the event that uses the format that they like to show up and play.

I understand that there were some questionable things that took place at this (these?) event(s), or at least that's the general opinion, but there are several threads regarding this. Is there any one thread or hopefully one post that goes through all of it from an unbiast or uninterested party?

i still for the life of me don't really see what was wrong with what was done or how it was handled.
kudos to the guys that put on this event, and hopefully they will continue to do more of them. i know i had a blast watching the scotch doubles 8 ball challenge match the other night. wish i hadn't have been working or i would have watched some of the 10/8 ball as well.
regardless of the situation, you should have to play a match and beat someone to advance (with the exception of the occasional first round situation in a tourney)...period. you earn wins...you shouldn't have them handed to you because someone had to leave early.

I for one am glad that Mark has kept a couple of "pro" events at his tourney, although the Masters divisions were full of top flight players as well. Jason Klatt won the Open 9-Ball and Skyler Woodward won the Grand Masters event.
My suggestion to Mark is to make each four man bracket a double elimination tourney, with the top two qualifying for the finals. There would still be only six matches required, and you would end up with one unbeaten player and one with a single loss. The final eight would be seeded with each undefeated player taking on a guy with a loss. This part of the event would be single elimination and require only seven matches to complete. It could be done on two tables in three days with no problem!
Rather than b-tch about what went wrong, I'm into finding solutions. By the way great coverage by Justin and his crew. Everyone got to see some terrific pool played by some of the world's best players. Now I hope you all realize that Shane is not indestructible. :wink:
