I'm so dissapointed in myself...

I agree with what everyone else said - you did nothing wrong. He obviously waited until the last minute and needed to act.

But I understand how you feel. Just keep it in perspective: pool will not suffer because of you. I think it's pretty cool that you were contacted at all! Try to remember that much - you're somebody! :)

Melinda, I pray for the day that we can tell ESPN to go F themselves and work with Spike etc. They have dropped the Pool biz like it was the plague. They will at this point do nothing for us unless we are hoilding a $500k event on the roof of the playboy mansion. They hold all the cards and have us by the huevos or ovarys whatever . One dat Melinda your great pictures and those of DHoppe's will be in such de,and they will hold up the printing of a magazine and not come to us at the last min for a filler. You are awesome. I know we need ESPN but it is always on their crappy terms it seems. Again I would like for our sport to be so in demand that we could turn around and do to them what they are doing to us and make them pay out the ASS for coverage. Anyway hows things well I hope :)

You did all you could sweetie. Now at least you have a line developed between the two of you for next time. And you can give him monthly reminders and ask if he needs anything!

I can see that Trigger wanted to be pc about whose pics would be made public because that photog would probably want some sort of contract/compensation with ESPN.

Trigger, you did right. The ESPN person should've given you leeway of a couple days before their deadline.

And for all those not agreeing with giving out photos from photogs without their permission, there are a few photogs on this forum who would object with free sharing without their permission.

Barbara<~~~seen it, and read about it a couple years ago...

I'm confused...

He asked me for photos, but I pointed him to Diana b/c she was at the US Open last year and took photos at the event.

I didn't know just any pics would do - I thought they would want photos from the event ITSELF (that's another learning experience on my part).

As far as giving out photos from other photogs, that wasn't even an option - I don't have her pics.

I could be reading your post wrong, though, if I am let me know b/c I am confused and also blinded by your avatar. :D

Bad move human!

I'm sending you RED REP on this one!!! J/K :grin-square:

This person obviously wanted YOUR pictures, not Dianna's. Dianna takes great pics as well, but when you suggested contacting Dianna and he said, " You probably can help me. As long as the photos represent a 9 Ball Tournament it is fine. Please send action, someone taking aim maybe or just after a shot, no bigger than 3 MB each (per email). The photos run thumbnail size so should be easily identifiable.", You should have quit trying to contact Dianna and sent him your photos!

I think some got the impression that you were gonna send Dianna's photos and that's why you were trying to contact her. I didn't get that idea from your post.

Your photos are the bomb babes!!! You got what they want! You got what we want.

ESPN won't run them unless they come from the photographer or the photographer's agent. But yes, if someone sent them my pics without my permission and/or knowledge, it would suck. Because photography is my main source of income. Having your pictures run in a magazine without credit or compensation is like winning a tournament and not getting paid.

EDIT: It was clear to me that you (akatrigger) weren't going to send them Dhoppe's pictures.

I think you posted the correct answer right in the beginning. You said they contacted you and someone else. The other "else" got photos there first. I was in the graphics field to a long time. Long enough to watch integrity go out the window. Deadlines and bottom lines are all they are interested in. Hope the timing works out better for ya next time.

I guess I am not clear. LOL

As soon as he said he could use my photos from a non-US Open event, I was working on gathering some of my photos for him. I didn't keep contacting Diana....

The "someone else" was another online billiards media company... and they didn't send photos in time either. :(

Darn it!! Ugh....

Then an hour later:

I tried to email Diana but her spam blocker is blocking me with an ERROR message. Do you have a phone number? Are you able to send me something?

No, you were clear. Here it is.

edited to add:

Maybe you were e-mailing ESPN saying that you tried to contact Dianna.

some replies...

Thank you to everyone for the replies and support! I still feel so sick to my stomach. Ugh.

What's ironic is I was working on putting photos online from this past weekend and adding captions to about 250 photos last night.... http://www.obcuestour.com/RustysSept08/

I can't quote all, but here are a few direct comments (in one post to save space, lol):

Nope, a different Shawn.

Thank you!! That makes me feel better... of course he did say the don't print events w/o photo... hhmm.. either way, I'm glad they mentioned it already! Yay!

Send him some pictures anyway so that he has them in case they need a last minute filler.

MM...and please help Disco win a FF game!!!

Good idea, will do.

Yeah, what is up with Disco? He said we were gonna win.... :(

If they contact you again, please give them Corvette's info so he can send them some pic's.

I would do that, but he's still waiting to find out what's happening with JohnnyT

I highly doubt the deadlines are that short. He just waited until the last minute.
Excellent perspective. That makes me feel better!

I don't understand why you just don't send them NOW.
I think I will! Good idea.

I can feel your pain...

I had some (non-pool related) pictures posted on the web that I had taken for fun and was ultimately contacted directly by an editor of a magazine. Of course, I was really excited by the notion that a picture might be used in a national publication (though it was not as big as ESPN!).

After a couple of positive and enthusiastic e-mail exchanges from the editor, I was instructed to send a particular image in high resolution format from my collection on disc, which I did. I even sent it first class postage in hopes that it would seem more "official" and professional.

Well, a few years have passed and I never heard back, and from what I believe, my image was never used. I'm not sure if I did something wrong in my delivery or what, but I suppose it was meant to be.

I still take photos because I love to, and perhaps someday an opportunity will present itself again, one never knows.

I hope this little story helps ease the pain a bit. Good luck, and keep shooting! (pool and pictures)

Melinda,
Sorry to hear about that. I agree, you are a great asset. Don't beat yourself up.

I have been in both positions under deadlines for writing and approving. It is was it is. Good suggestions from AZBers ....Definitely put a piece together for them to have on file. There has been so many times where stuff did not work out at the last minute and I had to scramble to pull something together quick.

It will show them that you can be depended on. They will definitely respect you for it. Good Luck.
