We just posted a new story on the front page about the W9BC in Doha. Surprisingly, two greats have lost their first-round matches. Mika lost 9-8 to Tony Drago and SVB lost 9-7 to Matt Edwards of New Zealand. Story is here.

saw mika play a bit in doha before the championships. he just wasn't looking like his old self :S

I wonder if these two greats were suffering from jet-lag. I read here once that Rempe used to get to overseas events three days ahead so his head would have time to clear before the matches began.

yeah hes been travelling ALOT and playing NON stop....im sure it takes a toll on you. I think if he didnt travel for a few months he'd be playing at his old speed in no time. I imagine hes pretty worn out right now.

Randall, Shane is young and strong and lives a very full life! He LOVES to play pool and practices for hours every day, even when there is no tournament. His game is solid right now and he is capable of winning any match and any tournament he plays in. I'm not worried about him. If he needs a break he will take one.

The competition in events like this is extremely tough and even a player like Shane has his hands full with all the good players. There are 50-60 guys over there that play his speed or very close! Remember this is 9-Ball. If they are playing Ten Ball his stock jumps up.

As for me, I'm really proud of him for having the balls to get out there and travel the world playing against the best pool players on the planet. It's triple tough to make money out there and Shane is fighting hard to do it. Yes he has sponsorship but if he wants to put any money in his pocket he has to win it!

P.S. He is the one buying all those plane tickets and paying all those hotel bills, plus all the other expenses he incurs. There is no "free ride" for him! Shane is hungry to win in every tournament he goes to. Best of all he believes he can win! Shane is still improving as a player. He hasn't reached his peak yet. By being willing to travel anywhere to play against the very best players Shane will continue to improve. I can see him winning several world titles before he's ready to retire from competitive pool.

Jay, I think you're right. It also takes alot of self-determination to keep pressing when you've had a loss recently. Myself having been in the military and having to got to a memorial service for a friend lost two days before, and then having to go outside the wire on a mission hours after the service was difficult. But, in the long run it teaches you to be resilient and focused. I hope he does well and learns while he's there---win or lose----you must always learn.
